I liked Sue. It is a rarity for Western female characters to be portrayed as more than trophy pieces in many Bollywood movies. So, kudos to the team for making her character so real. I won't blame Sue as much as you have done - yes, it might have been an over-reaction, but you can understand her. She assumes that India's current generation would as get moved by the stories of its freedom fighters as she is. But when she comes to India, nobody really cares that much about what people did in the past except for Atul Kulkarni's character. She has seen another side of Kulkarni's character - somebody who doesn't need to be reminded what a freedom fighter said and can recite them from his memory. Others haven't seen it. Seeing them fight like that, almost ready to kill each other, it is natural for her to feel that she has reached the end of the road. Nobody in the group has shown that much commitment to the story and are killing each other over it. She had been extremely patient with the group until then, inspiring them to be better performers and taking all their jokes in its stride. So, don't think it is fair to blame Sue that much for a genuine emotional outburst.

I don't understand your initial point . Could you provide some examples to when foreign actors have done roles which have been portrayed as trophy pieces ?
@thatfilmydesaikid Жыл бұрын
@@pruthvirajshinde9991 Ya, I’m confused about the same. Wonder if they meant having a good casting for such roles wasn’t seen often back then. I mean, there’s Lagaan but that was a good 7 years or so before, and it IS true that Hindi film producers typically didn’t go out of their way to get good foreign actors for a while.
@whyyy463 Жыл бұрын
While it's great that Sue has a meatier role than most, I don't think her outburst is warranted. She came to India. She has no funds. And she wants people to work for her film. What do they get in return? Once enough time passes, most people forget about freedom fighters. The present is of a more immediate concern. Their indifference isn't unusual. Her demands are.

I get what you're saying Steph and I agree to an extent, but I do think Sue's frustration stems from the fact that she has invested all her own savings and if this doesn't work, she has nothing to show for it. It's clearly a passion project which is interfering with her own rational thinking and messing with her emotions. You can see just how much the other boys have tested her patience for days. Pandey being the perfect Bismil was such an unexpected bonus, especially since she didn't have to coach him at all like the other boys, that she didn't realize just how deep the hatred between the boys was (I also don't think she truly understood the insult Pandey gave Aslam, it's one thing to know Hindi and another to understand the nuance of certain terms). I belong to the same community as Aslam and I understand his family's issues on a very personal level but I have to say, Lakshman Pandey is the epitome of ignorance rather than racism. He is brainwashed into hating the Muslim community and the western culture. He's not racist, he's a bigot because of his misplaced ideals (you will see later).

An absolute gem of a movie that can never get released in today's India. It will be called antinational just like that. And then people blame Bollywood for producing terrible movies. This was a period when movies that focused on social issues were being produced and the audience was broadminded enough not to let their religious and party prejudices blind them. This movie was asking questions as to how the generations after India's independence had slowly forgotten the sacrifice of their forefathers and foremothers and were happy either with the large scale corruption in the country or were migrating to other countries. It talked about the divisions that existed in the country between religions. Both Hindu extremism and Muslim extremism were criticized - Muslim communities who kept to themselves believing they would never get accepted as part of the mainstream and Hindu extremists who believed India should be a Hindu rashtra. But in Kunal Kapoor's Muslim character who doesn't listen to the dictates of his family, we have somebody who breaks out of that mould. The same goes for Atul Kulkarni's Hindu character - he is the only one in the group who cared about the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, but was too blinded by his ideology to see that others also belonged to this nation as much as him.

True, such films can't be made in today's time. There were plenty of movies made in India before that questioned the system where the hero fights the govt and the people in power. But now it is extremely difficult. The characters in the film understand who is actually benefitting from all the hate. The politicians who instigate violence don't get killed in riots their kids have a lavish lifestyle in foreign countries just the powerless suffer in this nation. One of the oldest films that brought Hindus and Muslims together was called Dharmputra in 1961 staring Shashi Kapoor, one of the new films that brought Hindus and Muslims together was called Mulk in 2018 staring Rishi Kapoor.

Well this movie includes many prejudices which you guys might not understand 1. Unity among the various religions like Hindus and Muslims , because the whole country was divided on the basis of religion in 1947 . India became a secular country and pakistan an Islamic one 2. How today’s youth don’t understand the emotions , mind set and sacrifices made by our freedom fighters to get free from British colonialism. 3. India has 65-70% population under 30 years of age . So to empower them is also one purpose 4. How political and beurocratic system works in India 5. Bhagat Singh , ram Prasad Bismil , Ashfaqullah khan , Bhagat singh , Rajguru , sukhdev and Durga bhabhi were the freedom fighters. There is an emotion attached with them in every Indian 6. Suu is the grand daughter of a British jailor who hanged Bhagat singh and is now making a film on Indian freedom struggle . My God that’s some thing

Who else wants Jaby to react to classics? 🥺 Sholay, Anand, Gol Maal, Maya Bazar, Pyasaa, Awaara, Mera Naam Joker... So many great movies. I didn't grow up with them, only saw them in the last 3 years. They are still very good watches and it would give Jaby a deeper knowledge of Indian cinema 🙂

We as Indians DO look for reasons to kill each other or at the very least divide ourselves. Be it via cast creed religion region or any of the million different differences. To solve any problem, we need to acknowledge that it exists.
