PHOOL (flower) PUSHPA (flower) Deepak's village: SOORAJMUKHI (A flower) The bus Deepak takes to his village: PUSHPA TRAVELS (Flower) Flower: A symbol of tenderness, innocence or purity. This symbol of innocence and purity is spread throughout the village life in the film. Phool's husband: DEEPAK (lamp/ a source of light) Pushpa's husband: PRADEEP (lamp/ a source of light) A lamp can either guide you through darkness or it can burn you. Deepak is a guiding force, a ray of hope for both Phool and Pushpa in their darkest times. While Pradeep burnt his ex-wife to death. (One lamp showed the way, the other burnt down a life) Pushpa's real name: JAYA (victorious) Jaya is a rebel at heart. But, because of the social and gender expectations, she is forced to be soft, and tender like a flower ( PUSHPA). Jaya especially mentions the dish made of lotus stems. She consumes a dish made of flowers ( Kamal Kakdi). She symbolically consumes her tenderness her softness, and the flowery side of her character. She rebels against the social norms and expectations such as taking her husband's name and running away from her marriage to pursue her education. She strives to be VICTORIOUS. Name of the police officer: SHYAM MANOHAR SHYAM: Dark, Black ( one name of Lord Krishna) MANOHAR: Lovable, one who wins our heart (another name of Lord Krishna) In the first part of the movie Shyam Manohar is shown as corrupt, and a greedy officer. Showing the dark side of his character. Thus, he is SHYAM. In the second half, Shyam Manohar wins our hearts by taking the right step by saving Jaya from her husband. Thus, he becomes MANOHAR. This shows the dual nature of power and judiciary. It can be dark and mischievous but it can also be very beautiful. These are some interesting things I observed after watching the film. This is a purely subjective observation and can vary from person to person. 🌼

FUN FACT - in 1951 during India's first general election 2.8 million women couldn't vote because they didn't give their own name while registering to vote. Election commissioner sukumar sen said "these women simply refused to give their proper names in the electoral rolls and insisted that they be identified as A's mother, B's wife etc"

That sounds like a sad fact but also funny. Being in a relationship doesn’t mean you should loose your identity but that’s exactly what happens to these rural girls. And unfortunately, it is masqueraded under a selfless gesture by society. No, it’s just idiotic. You won’t see a guy do this. Why ? Cause they don’t feel their identity is shameful or useless.

@@blueshoes5145I think it has more to do that traditional women lives revolved around their husbands. In India, since many women didn’t want to get involved much with the paperwork ( it was tough) they left the legal work to their husbands. In many culture it is believed that the husband life decreases if his wife calls him by his name. Also in older days husband used to be much older than the wife so it was considered disrespectful to call someone older by their name.

Just watched "Laapataa ladies". The movie is Simply Superb. The scene between Deepak & Phool in the farm just took it to the next level. He is so vulnerable in that scene and yet he goes ahead with it. The Overall narrative & storyline is so good. This movie is much much better than the big budget South Indian movies and their remakes which have no sense in them - just big loud music, over the top action & tons of over acting. No nuance at all. It is high time that audiences start valuing & supporting quality cinema over big budget loud movies with over the top acting.

Dude you don't know how toxic this veil culture is in villages. Its easy to judge the story but this veil thing is very much real even today in remote village areas where women put on long veils. Even in metros we can see such ladies. It's a thing of modesty for them. Veil culture wasn't in ancient india and it entered with invaders.

That facial expression when he says 'I love you' is phenomenal. Coming from a tiny village in India, I can totally understand why he made that face. It demands a lot of courage to say that for a village boy. Stunning performance from my, an indie-filmmaker's perspective. And I cannot wait to see your reaction on a film I was a part of. Won't reveal the name though I know you will react on that because it's a big budget bolly. haha

Beautiful movie - satire on regressive customs. It's absolutely hilarious to see the passive defensive comments about many of these customs. It still exists in many parts of the country 2001 was just 20+ years ago. One sheep even blamed the Mughals and British for the veil culture because apparently India is the land of kamasutra like the whole of India read that and practiced it. It's a very nicely done social satire which makes you think and question customs that don't have a place in modern societies. It's not a movie to make you defensive and blame others for it - it's a call for self introspection. I will get bombarded by hate comments because of my first name. That's okay - I'm used to it. Twenty years later another movie will be made about this decades defensiveness and blame game culture. God bless you all with the grace of wisdom

Phool and Jaya were shown as strikingly opposite in the movie through their characteristics, reactions and even the police inspector also said to deepak while arresting jaya, tum Phool ki jagah kaanta le aaye, hum nikaal diye (You brought a thorn instead of a flower, I've removed it.) But one thing which both can commonly feel is FREEDOM which is shown through sunshine Phool (at the Train Gate, while returning) and Jaya(at the Bus Window) 🌤🌤 This analogy sums up the movie and the message it is serving to the audience that no matter what your background is, ambition is, nature, personality, every women has a Thirst AND Right to her Freedom. A very well Crafted Masterpiece. It'll be a Cult for sure! ❤❤ After all it's AAMIR KAHN PRODUCTIONS.

I found this movie through your review!! I loved your reactions and comments. It was quite refreshing to see western reactions to Indian culture! I’m an Indian American and I can resonate with both cultures. India is an incredibly diverse land where food and language change sometimes every 100 kilometers, for example! It is also the oldest but still living civilization on the planet and therefore, you’ll see extreme and large differences in beliefs, customs, and practices all coexisting and many times within the same household. It can be quite confusing to an outsider. Urban India can be extremely modern meaning Americanized, for example.

It's not as simple as you thinking. Women were forced to practice these customs, unless society would call them uncultured or bad girls. Here you yourself given example of boss. So, your example also conclude that husband is boss in a relationship, and wife is just a worker or servant. This is why these kinds of movies were made to rectify bad practices in society of Indian culture and religion.

no one in hinduism calls her husband name directly they either say ayy jii meaning hey with utmost respect or in earlier times used to say arya putra (son of arya..here arya means warrior) and its purely cultural my mom too dont call my father by name she says suniye jii(listen with respect) or sunte hooo(are u listening) and even earlier times man were used to be named after their mother when young and when married then by wives like yashoda nandan krishn, kaushalya nandan ram while young and after marriage siya ram or siya pati ram, or radha krishn or gauri shankar or lakshmi narayan so everytime women name is taken before man..though hinduism is a patriarchal dharm

There are many aspects if we start considering them one by one. First of all, as you said that hinduism is patriarchal dharm. Right? So, if we will start comparing it with other religions just like xtianity and muslims, then you will find out that Hinduism is like a heaven for women and girls. Few points: 1) Hinduism is only biggest religion in world which worships female Goddesses. 2) other religions people calls/greet their gods as He/Him ONLY, while Hindus greets creator of this universe as He/She and Him/Her altogether. 3) only in Hinduism, you will find millions of girls and women whose surname are Devi, just like sunita devi, vimla devi etc. So, Hindu girls denotes themselves as goddesses. 4) In Hinduism, you celebrates Navratri in which all girl-children are worshipped as Devi. 5) Hinduism have given Kamasutra to the world, not xtians and muslims which also shows how liberals were Hindus since civilisations. 6) In Hinduism, women are allowed to go in all temples, whereas they are banned in peaceful religion to enter into their worshipping place. 7) if you will study history, then you will find that xtians just ki***d the women who wanted to study and also they ki***d the scientists and astronomers who said that earth revolves around the sun, not sun revolves around the earth, because those scientists and astronomers had gone against the teachings and beliefs of churches. 8) and whole world knows about peaceful religion, that girls get dead even if they shows hair of their heads, and even if they want to study, and even if they marry other religion boys, and even if they dance, and even if they put lipstick which not allowed in their so-called religion

@@vishalrao4073 brother there is no problem in Hinduism being patriarchal because despite of being patriarchal it gives most respect to girls and women and that what matters I think u wrongly understood my statement... My apologies for that

@@AniketKumar-dj8jyno, I understood your point of views as well. Yes, our society were patriarchal in many ways in Hinduism as well...and we regularly tried to rectify it since centuries. And we appreciate if things goes in good ways to give more freedom to women. We need to give them more rights, more education, more freedom. And these kinda movies were made to rectify all the bad practices in society...we need more films like these which raises struggles of women in different parts of society. I know the difficulties for women in villages. They even don't know how to speak properly in front of others.

@@vishalrao4073 yep this platform is strict against anti chritians and anti islam so it deletes the comment and thats the difference between religion and dharm as they are a religion they are made by man and are rigid but dharm changes acc to situation and is not made by man its made by bhagwan/god

The comment from Achara about the Ghoongat (looking down so she doesn’t trip) is the practical aspect. The deeper meaning of what the lady in the movie meant was once a girl gets married (aka ghoongat on) , she just has to follow (her in-laws/husband/old traditions) never look forward (thinking for herself or being independent). That’s why I love the character arc of Phool the director shows the audience. She learns to be independent, speak up , to have an ambition, be brave, and look out for herself. I also love the family which was very caring and considerate. Overall I loved this movie. The actors were great, the story was really good. It may seem like a feminist movie to most educated city dwellers but i think the target audience are the women who still feel like it’s their duty to be submissive and put family first even in cases where the family is supportive. I like how it teaches such women to be courageous and to follow their passion without being disrespectful to anyone. Loved the characters arc of the police officer too.

The crowds around train bathrooms are intense. You have to fight your way in. The exits are right next to them wo people just stand there waiting to jump off at their stations. These days, train conditions are so bad that people have resorted to sitting and sleeping in the toilets, making access impossible. Biggest failure of infrastructure in history.
