The character Anbuaras, calls himself "Aras" to sound modern. "Aras" which can be also pronounced as "Arse"; which is also how the character behaves. 😂 Little funny nuance in writing by Kamal sir.

My first comment here: Great pick and a big surprise Jaby & Achara. You can relate the 'characteristics' of Kamal & Madhavan to John Candy and Steve Martin in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. While many say Anbe Sivam is an adoption of PTA, Kamal localized it entirely keeping just the attributes of the main lead actors, one being selfish and other being grounded and practical. Anbe Sivam is a movie to be studied by aspiring movie makers and I guess it's part of the curriculum in the Film Institute of Chennai. This movie bombed in the box office as with the few other gems of Kamal like Guna, Mahanadhi. Keeping the commercial part aside, this is one of the finest performances of Kamal & Madhavan and easily gets a place in Kamal's Top 10!

SON, Anbe Sivam was not inspired by "Planes Trains & Automobiles". Just that R Madhavan's & Kamal's character had resemblance with the characters of Steve Martin & John Candy. However the story line was completely different. Cheers !!!

It's one of those movies where the subtitles can't do full justice. It has many clever puns and lines with deep meaning, so it's hard to translate it in subtitles. Also A.Aras is supposed to be a representative of the youth of the nation, and a figment of capitalism. And Nalla is the embodiment of communism. There are lot of parallels and layers to this story, which is difficult to convey via subtitles.

Thanks Jaby and Achara. Just to add more clarity, the name of the movie itself is a pun. On one hand it means love (anbu) is God(Sivam). On the other hand the two main characters are named Anbu and Sivam. The irony being that the guy named Anbu doesn't want to be associated with the name Anbu and hence calls himself Ars and the guy named Sivam is an atheist. The whole movie is filled so many such nuances which may be missed without knowing the Tamil language.
