Lyrics:
Goodnight Vienna,
You city of a million melodies
Our hearts are thrilling to the strains that you play
From dawn till the daylight dies.
Goodnight Vienna,
Where moonlight fills the air with mystery
And eyes are shining to the gipsy guitars
That sing to the starry sky.
Enchanted city of Columbine and Pierrot,
We know the magic of your spell,
Of our romances, you’re the hero,
Now is the time to say farewell.
Goodnight Vienna,
Now lovers kiss beneath your linden tree
The world is waiting on the edge of the day
Just waiting to say goodnight.

Though it is sweetly sentimental and delivered with great elegance, this song puts me in a melancholy mood. I can't help being reminded of the Anschluss which Hitler forced upon Austria. Indeed the 1930s were turbulent and worrisome times. In a strange way, this could be regarded as a requiem. Buchana'ns voice is eremarkable for the clarity and lightness of his bass register. The instrumentals are exquisite.

Found reference to this music in one of my father's love letters to mother in 1933 - suggesting they could practice the tango to this! So sweet. They were both 19 then. Now living in my heart and memories.

in march 1933 it was good night democracy in vienna. chancellor dollfuss, egged on by mussolini, dissolved the free press, free unions and associations and at last parliament. in february 1934 police provoked the insurrection of the armed workers‘ organizations. yeah, „class counted for something“. in march 1938 came hitler.

Recorded in 1932? Good night indeed! The next year, Hitler came to power, and by 1938 he had take over Austria as well.

@@mickeyh1961 It's a reflection upon history, not a comment on the song itself, which is beautifully crafted and performed perfectly. But like so much good secular art, it has an air of sadness for me, which gives rise to such reflections. We cannot enjoy permanent happiness in a sin-filled world. If there is a 'deeper' message in the song, that could be it, as with so many artistic creations.

He was a light tenor. Singing more loudly would have been totally out of style in this song.
