Jack Jones, Johnny Mandel, and Johnny Mercer; a combination that doesn't get much better. After Tony Bennett's passing in July of last year, Jack Jones was the sole remaining classic purveyor of the Great American Songbook, another artist whose honesty of presentation connected him with so many. With his passing, an era has sadly come to an end. To be sure, it was an era of entrenched and legalized racism and bigotry, the stain of which still abounds, but it was also an era of class and good taste within the culture, the disappearance of which I feel to be a collective loss. I was 8 when this recording came out, and I would enjoy it and similar tunes whenever they played on the great WNEW in NY, whether from my parents' car or kitchen radios. And even at that age, music like this, and singers like Mr. Jones, or Tony Bennett, Nat Cole, Ella, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Hartman, Carmen McCrae, Joe Williams, and of course, Frank Sinatra, resonated deep within me. They still, do and always will along with the longing for what has disappeared.
