I left New York in 1949 To go across the country without a bad blame dime Montana in the cold cold fall Found my father in the gambling hall Father, Father where you been? I've been out in the world and I'm only ten Father, Father where you been? I've been out in the world and I'm only ten Don't worry about me if I should die of pleurisy Across to Mississippi, across to Tennessee Across the Niagara, home I'll never be Home in ol' Medora, home in Ol' Truckee Apalachicola, home I'll never be Better or for worse, thick and thin Like being married to the Little poor man God he loves me Just like I love him I want you to do Just the same for him Well the worms eat away but don't worry watch the wind So I left Montana on an old freight train The night my father died in the cold cold rain Road to Opelousas, road to Wounded Knee Road to Ogallala home I'll never be Road to Oklahoma, road to El Cahon Road to Tahachapi, road to San Antone Hey, hey Road to Opelousas, road to Wounded Knee Road to Ogallala, home I'll never be Road to Oklahoma, road to El Cahon Road to Tahachapi, road to San Antone Home I'll never be, home I'll never be

The complete version: Can you hear me now? But anyway... Tonight also, I wrote a song, called «On the Road». I'm just rather reading what I wrote all night. There are better things coming than what I wrote all night Coming right straight from the mind to the voice, With no hand intervening. (singing) I left New York, 1949 To go across the country without a dad-blame dime Montana, in the cold, cold fall Found my father in the gambling hall Father, Father where have you been? You've been in the world since I was a teen Dear son, he said, don't worry about me, I'm about to die of pleurisy Cross the Mississippi, cross the Tennessee Cross the Niobrara - home I'll never be Home in Old Medora, home in Ol' Truckee Apalachicola - home I'll never be For better or for worse, Thick and thin Like being married to the little woman God loved me just like I loved him I want you do the same just for him Well the worms eat away But the worrywarts will win Oh the worms eat away But the worrywarts will win So I left Montana on an ol' freight train The night my father died in the cold, cold rain Rode up to Opelousas, rode to Wounded Knee, Rode to Ogallala - home I'll never be Home I'll never be…

Taken from the 2012 "On the Road" soundtrack. Music is by Gustavo Santaolalla. Credits don't say if it's actually Jack Kerouac's voice but it does sound like it.

I LOVE to hear Jack singing Jazz songs. OK, let's face it - technically speaking, Jack was not a singer. But neither is Bob Dylan, Tom Waits or Mick Jagger. So what? Singing essentially is about Communication, and when it came to Communication (and to Life itself), Jack was The Real Deal. Indisputably Jack's principal virtue was his Authenticity. There wasn't a phony bone in Jean-Louis Kerouac's body. Authenticity was his Thing - unlike someone such as, say, Allen Ginsberg. If there were a Character on Gilligan's Island "BEATNIK POET," Ginsberg would have fit the part. Unfortunately, I don't believe that Jack's iconoclastic life contained a lot of happiness. Like the Christ, Artists suffer for the rest of us and we reap the rewards, having done little (if anything) to deserve them. I never met you, Jack, but I love you and I still do - the way that I love Shakespeare and Thomas Wolfe. St. Jack Kerouac, pray for us poor slobs who are still On the Road, just tryin' to make the best of a Bad Situation.

Lee Ranaldo did this? Interesting. At first it didn't sound like Jack talking, but then I heard the accent... the way he put emphasis on certain words... it's him.
