I love Kirby's more stylized bronze age art. It's very distinctive.

It's funny how that Invaders #5 cover is one of my all-time favorites, because it was laid out by Marie Severin who, for a time, was the hand behind so much of the Marvel look of the 70s (and if it wasn't her hand, it was John Romita's). In fact, the process of that particular cover, from layout to pencils to inks, was featured in FOOM magazine-which I happen to know because I HAVE that issue, lol.

That 1975 Avengers Treasury Edition let fans see what Kirby could do with The Vision and the furry version of The Beast, whom he had not drawn before. It was neat to see.

It was also nice to see Kirby do a Conan cover back in 1975..

These covers were my introduction to Kirby, as I first started reading comics around 1975, right before his "return" to Marvel. I probably have about a third of the comics in this video collage. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Some of the covers are incredible and some look kinda rushed like Marvel needed a cover fast and Kirby still sold. Enough people knew who Jack was and bought them

Hard to believe Marvel used to publish books with Characters like WoodGod, 3-D Man, and Skull the Slayer.

Kirby Continuum Invaders #33 looks like it was drawn by Dave Cockrum, who was no slouch himself but definitely not Kirby. If Kirby was involved he probably laid out the drawing and Dave finished up with inks.
@johnminehan11483 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, it was Kirby pencils and Cockrum inks. Like his mentor Murphy Anderson, Cockrum was a strong inker whose style tended to come through.

The king was at his peak around 1966 I would say .
@kirbycontinuum57006 жыл бұрын
Yes, or maybe 1967. If you look at the FF annual that year (#5), it's really his most refined work, even though Sinnott didn't ink it. And that's when Jack turned 50. But, hey, I can go with 1966 as his zenith, too. Both years were incredible.

@@kirbycontinuum5700 I won';t disaggre with you but I would just say the late 60's was his greatest work.

I noticed that Jack Kirby even on heros drew an exaggerated somewhat ape like faces and jaws!! It was really distinctive on the evil villains henchmen though!!! The henchmen all looked like outright apes!!!

You saved money but you cheated yourself out of a lot of good stories and hours of pleasure reading them.

I also, was accustomed to getting a book at anywhere from 52 pages to 80 pages for 25 cents, but they still managed even at 36 pages, to give a reader quality story and art, and it cost me plenty over the years to get the books I passed over back then.

10:27 is a hilarious cover! Stan is Mr Fantastic and its fitting Jack drew himself as the Thing. Dunno who the other two are supposed to be.
@psychodeviant89035 жыл бұрын
The Torch is Sol Brodsky, production manager at Marvel for a long time in the 60s and 70s. Stan always called him his right hand man. The Invisible Woman is Flo Steinberg, Stan's secretary, she also handled letters from fans sent to Marvel along with dozens of other duties. Basically, Sol and Flo, along with Stan and Jack were all instrumental in making Marvel what it was back in the 60s.

Just saw this. He mostly didn't get paid well (meaning at least half of what he deserved).

I wish that Kirby had done another run on the ff, backed up with him doing two in one with the thing and co stars. that or the avengers, with the thor and iron man books. The surfer and the inhumans. Even at bi monthly or as annuals He could have done 15 more years of work for marvel .
@johnminehan11483 жыл бұрын
I think he would have rather avoided that . . . .
@dougbrowne98902 жыл бұрын
A few of those covers sure don't look like Kirby. Perhaps they just had Kirby pencils and the inkers distorted them enough to look different??? Good video though.

Jack Kirby WAS the Golden Age of Marvel. Stan Lee ripped him off; Lee also ripped Steve Ditko off, but Ditko left before too much damage was done. Poor Jack suffered far too long and far too much. We owe Jack Kirby so much.
@1voiceofstl6 жыл бұрын
Lets be honest...these pale in comparison to his 60's work.

Most of these covers were done over Marie Severin layouts. Most of these are the worst covers Kirby ever did.
