@@loomhigh The main goss that I can recall is the typical thing of many of the Liberals were corrupt and being paid off and or really loved cheating on their wives with prostitues. The thing I like being told was that apparently when Jack went to go collect his stuff from his office and leave, on the way out of the building someone opened the door for him and said that they were so ashamed about what had happened and what will continue to happen. Jack gave his thanks and proceeded to walk out knowing that he made his mark but he would most likely never be able to do anything in politics ever again. In his later years, Jack seemed to just lay low, every so often attend footy games while smoking a big cigar and was always up for telling stories of what things were like back then.

Lang was the mentor of former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating, who had Lang re-instated back into the Labor Party. Lang’s more famous quotes: - “I don’t need to leave the country to know how to run it” ( in reference to the many Prime Ministers who would constantly travel to Europe) - “In the political race, always back the horse named ‘self-interest’” - “You may think you have a lot of time when you first start in Canberra but you don’t. Get as much done as you can, knowing your political career could end at anytime” Although I don’t think Lang would’ve been a fan of half your videos

Maybe so, but have you noticed how the Liberal Party can put forward snivelling goblins with a history of being caught out lying and still win? In contrast Labor has to be perfect. They have to put forward policy, but not too much policy. Be aggressive but not too aggressive. Make no mistakes, not even in a casual, off the cuff remark. Even then they might lose to the snivelling goblin if Rupert can find a way to spin something they said (or something they never said, reality doesn't matter) into a scary boogeyman. It is endlessly frustrating that we, as a country, will readily vote for open corruption and cruelty if Murdoch tells us to... which he usually does.
@Arbner
@Arbner 3 жыл бұрын
@@RictusHolloweye sure there is a media element to that, but a lot of the time the more progressive members of the Labour Party tout themselves as angels, so when they stuff up it’s very easy to criticise them. On the other hand the liberals tout them self as true blues and act boyish so it’s much easier for them to swipe away criticism. If labour politicians acted a lot more boyish and brute like the media would still attack them but it would be harder for it to stick and they would come of as petulant.

@@Arbner - "the more progressive members of the Labour Party tout themselves as angels" I'm not sure that is the case. After all it's usually the Liberal party members who tout their religious convictions as an indication of their own morality. The current prime minister even invited the media to film him attending his church. This is the very definition of virtue signalling, and I'm not sure that there have been many equivalent examples from the Labor party.

He had been private secretary to a minister in Jack Lang’s first government. Had some interesting tales about Lang. Another fun fact. The then Labor member for Newcastle had been a PoW in Germany in WW2 and was put to work writing in chalk the destinations of German troop trains on the side of the carriages. He incurred the wrath of a German soldier - and a broken jaw - when the soldier saw him writing “LANG IS RIGHT” on the trains.

Thanks heaps Jordie for featuring The Big Fella. (Edit: Sorry I wrote the following by before I was halfway through the video and saw you mentioned all this.) He undoubtedly had autocratic tendencies but he was dealing with a vastly unjust system with a "born to rule" class and fascists on his right and Communists on his left (it is important to remember that with the possible exception of WW1, there was no greater time of political strife in Australia with even a plot to oust Scullin in a coup and replace him with Monash... Monash had no interest). If Scullin had listened to him and had his backbone, we would have fared much better during the Depression. And the sacking of Lang was undoubtedly a coup. Lang undoubtedly made life so much better for poor and working people. My grandmother who grew up in his electorate always spoke glowingly of him.

@Joseph McDermott Yet we can't forget, that despite his detractor's pointing out of his autocratic level of sway and power he held over the people, indeed Jack Lang did step down peacefully, and not use this power for his own dictatorship when he could have tried to do so - a similar parallel to how George Washington stepped down peacefully while still head of the United States revolutionary army, despite being asked by some to retain supreme rulership.

A toss up between Chifley and Curtin IMHO. Curtin's domestic record is overlooked because of WW2. But I also remember learning how it was a bad thing that Lang took the money from the reserve, and how that very picture you showed us, was shown with the words 'LABOR LOSS' next to it. Basically, there's a hint of demonisation there.

Your comment about the source of the debt is actually factually incorrect. The great bulk of the debt was derived from huge loans from the British in the 20s to expand the industrial capacity of the Australian economy. Of course, charging that level of interest during the Depression was pretty horrible. I had an amazing history teacher who thought us all about Lang in highschool and I'm in Victoria. Australian history from him was basically unions, unions, unions.

That's true, BUT it brings up the bigger problem with banks. It's not just that they're war profiteers (which they are): it's that they play the game of "heads I win, tails you lose). Thanks to the power of compound interest, in the good economic times they make back two or three times what they lend to you in the first place which is...fine. Kind of exorbitant, but I'm not going to argue here about how we could do without usury. But when thinga go bad (like a GFC, which is often caused by the banks in the first place)...tails you lose! The banks get bailed out, regular people lose their homes and their jobs, and then banks, bondholders and corporations band together to force governments worldwide to adopt austerity programs (read:cutting social welfare when people most need them) all so that government can "pay it's debts" because you have to pay your debts right? But this is ignoring further questions like "why can't you renegotiate debts in times of economic hardship (rich people do that after all)?" Or "who are we in debt to and why?" (answer:because governments today run on bonds, which really just means debt to rich people who should just be paying that money in taxes, not sucking a welfare check from government to pay for the things that we all need.) The moral power of "but you have to pay your debts" is really hard to break, even while the long trend in history shows that the money lender is just as if not more in the wrong. Lamb's counterargument was "yes you lent us the money, but everyone in the world is struggling right now,and if the only way to pay you back on time is to make my own people starve then fuck you." The banks didn't like that. That's why he hated the banks.

Interesting talk here about debt and banks and such: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYuseoGOnax3mdU A lot of umms and lip smacking, but if you can get past that there's a lot to chew on to understand where Lang might have been coming from.

But... The President of America (tm) said The Banks were Too Big to fail! Or was that the corporations were too big... And yeah, I wonder how many people examine their programmed hate of the unions. The corps didn't give workers rights because they felt sorry for them. Maybe a tiny fraction of the workforce got benefits so they could poach workers from one another... No, it's been the unions. Wouldn't know it to hear the average Australian discussing what the unions did for our people.

@@duckman12569 Absolutely, the negative narrative around unions is plain ignorant. The Libs have somehow managed to talk workers into voting against themselves. Crazy. Absolutely there are issues around corruption (that's what you get when you give a select few too much power and pay them loads of $...our governments anybody?) but unions are the primary reason most of us can go to work today, hopefully not die and afford to feed & shelter ourselves adequately. Credit where it's due imho.

Words can't describe my appreciation for you Jordan and this channel 🙌 Jack Lang should be the standard for leaders in this country. I wasn't aware until now and I'm so greatful to be informed. I am however f*cking furious that neither this nor anything on Whitlam was taught in schools whilst I attended from 2003-2015. This MUST be crucial knowledge in the Australian education system.

But he's also promoting a man who was despised by both the communists and the fascists of Australia as well as essentially creating a cash economy. Here's a video about him from an American youtuber who might be a better person to listen to and support. Also remember Lang stood down before he went through with his plans so maybe he had enough self awareness and integrity (Which Jordies did point out) to realise what he was doing was wrong which really cant be said for most politicians, authoritarian or not. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3K7gn9qg5upbs0

Great to see you talking about Jack Lang. Let's not forget he had a very troublesome relationship with the Australian Labor Party, fighting with other leaders and leaving the movement numerous times including from 1943-1971 to run his OWN PARTY. We are in desperate need of another Jack Lang to form a similar movement at this time as both Labor and the Coalition are hopelessly controlled by the banks. Another thing to remember, he was a very strong believer in White Australia. In 'I Remember' he states: "We decided to keep this country as a citadel of the white peoples. Australia is still White Australia thanks to those who battled against those who wanted to exploit colored labor for their own ends. We must keep it that way." Jack Lang would despise the modern Australian Labor Party... Now take my money for a shirt.
