I just watched this movie the other night,I'm not an any movie watcher I save it for gems like these.A lot of ppl struggle w alcohol,I was one and this movie hit home.Just as jarring as when I first saw it w my mom in the early 70s when we finally got tv.

I still think he was truly snubbed for one of his BEST performances, in Glengarry Glen Ross. All the focus and acclaims went to Pacino... But, for me, Jack gave the best piece of acting than everyone in that movie..including Al. And I'm a huge Pacino fan.

In 1964 Lemmon was fresh from a very dramatic scene in this movie. He and Lee Remick were living The Days of Wine and Roses, a beautiful tune with haunting lyrics about life with alcohol, as they acted out this very difficult and heartbreaking film about drinking, and its destructive nature on relationships and family. A very touching and dark film, produced at a time when films about such subjects were not produced, and when such personal relationships and addiction were not talked of. But more than that, Jack himself was a recovering alcoholic. So hearing The Days of Wine and Roses for the first time touch him in a way that grabbed his heart and comforted his soul. I've been playing this Henry Mancini tune ever since I heard it back in 1965. Great music and great performances never die. They are handed down from generation to generation like precious family heirlooms that need to be appreciated for their intrinsic thought, talent and beauty. I saw Jack Lemmon once in Beverly Hills, walking down the street on Rodeo Drive after coming out from a gentleman's clothing store. I hollered out the car window, "Hi Jack" and he looked, smiled and waved. He loved people. Jack was also a fellow piano player. I think of him every time I play this tune.

An amazing and heart wrenching film. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick at the top of their respective games. Sometimes, very difficult to watch because of how incredibly it depicted the sadness of alcoholism.

The poem that the song came from is also very moving. It is by Ernest Dowson and brings me to tears when I read it. "They are not long the weeping and the laughter, love and desire and hate; I think they have no portion after we pass the gate. Jack was right about the song "The Days of Wine and Roses". It is haunting, beautiful and it perfectly mirrors the moods and emotions of a conflicted love affair between two struggling alcoholics, as Jack and Lee Remmick played in the movie. But another reason Jack felt so deeply for this gorgeous tune was the fact that he was a struggling and recovering alcoholic in real life. His performance in "The Days of Wine and Roses" actually portrayed his real life passions and struggles.

@@leeenfieldsmle Well, perhaps the term "accomplished pianist" is stretching it a bit. Jack was not a pianist. He was an actor who played piano as a hobbyist. He didn't read music, and played mostly by ear, a variety of pop tunes he liked. I've seen videos where he played piano, and he played at an intermediate level of skill. He did record an album several decades ago, but he never played piano professionally, except when he was very young as a job in local joints to make a few bucks and a free meal during college. Since he loved to play, and was a great friend of Johnny Carson, he often played a number or two on the Tonight Show, accompanied by the orchestra, which played pre-written arrangements around Jack's tune selection. He once jokingly said that he thought in a previous life, he was a piano player in a whore house. This is one of many piano player's dream gigs, since in olden days, brothel's had piano players to provide background music, and accompaniment for the girls to sing along. Piano players who had such a gig were lucky, since had access to lots of women, who automatically were attracted to to the piano player as well as his music. Most celebrities have alter ego dream careers. Most singers dream of being actors. Most actors dream of being singers or musicians. Most sports stars dream of being entertainers, and entertainers wished they could be sports stars. Lots of celebrity men dream of being race car drivers and the women wish they were supermodels, and supermodels only dream of one thing....eating anything they want as much as they want, anytime they want it !!

These young musicians have very little organic talent, the young film makers have no depth,they can't write an original intelligent screenplay or story the only composers alive from the Hollywood golden age are John williams, Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin.Listen to the opening credit music from the 1965 Gregory Peck film, "Mirage". The score was composed by Quincy Jones. Both Gregory Peck and Quincy's good friend Henry Mancini asked Quincy if he would write the music for the 1965 film," Mirage."

...and don't forget Alfred Newman (Randy's uncle). I think of him not only for his great music, but also every time I hear the famous 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning of their movies (composed in 1933) - so great that it is still in use today (helped a little by John Williams writing the Star Wars score in the same key (b flat) then sequing from the fanfare into the Star Wars theme in the same key). But Mancini is still my all-time favorite.
