All he had to do was say the kindest words of gratitude to Jack Lemmon, that would have been more than enough. Calling him up on stage and giving him the award was a little embarrassing to watch. Even Jack himself was a little embarrassed. That was clearly obvious.

Ving Rhames worked his whole life to get to that moment. He brought his wife and his mother with him to share in his victory. And there he won right in front of his mother, who I'm sure instilled in him the lesson to always do what he thought was right. And there, right in front of her, he did exactly that. Heeding his mama's words to do what he thought was right over his own personal victory and satisfaction. If that doesn't touch you, you need to reassess your life.

Ving gave a hunk of metal to Jack. The "award" was still only for Ving... him giving it doesn't change the fact that in the books, Ving won. Nice gesture, but meaningless. So Jack can point to it on the wall, and say "There is Vings award..."
@jamess54573 жыл бұрын
@@ckmoore101 True, but if you watched the video Jack felt really awkward with the gesture and attempted to give it back to Ving.. Ving wouldn't take it back. I believe the point was that Ving was so respectful of Lemmon's body of work (not just the performance he was up for)

Ving gave Lemmon his time on-stage. And his consideration. And his respect. And his due. And -- maybe, just maybe -- a message to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that they'd made the wrong call. At the end of the day, the award IS just a hunk of metal.
@realitycheck53834 жыл бұрын
first, he cries while walking to the stage to accept. then, after everyone finished laughing and realized how honored he was, they clapped. then, he gave a simple quote and asked mr. lemon to come to the stage. once you thought that he had made everyone feel his appreciation, he gives his award to someone who he appreciated. THAT my friends is a man of respect! one of the classiest guys in hollywood!
@goldcd3 жыл бұрын
I just felt 'class everywhere' when I saw that. Firstly from Ving, and then from Jack - he didn't leave him hanging, came up and appreciated the gesture - but didn't pretend he'd won. Now personally I think Jack's 12 is better than the original, and I've not see the Don King biopic, but this doesn't matter. I just love the idea that 'awarded by your peers' isn't the faceless establishment that makes films. Your 'peer' is the guy your were nominated with. That's a 'peer'.

They only talked for like a couple minutes and when they were done, my friend thanked him for his time and said how he was one of the nicest people he had met and how he didn't need to give him the attention he did and Ving responded that there was no reason to be rude to anyone especially to a fan. That fans spend their hard earned money to buy a ticket to one of his movies and buy the DVD's and the like and they help keep food on his table for him and his family so he should be thanking you for your time. My friend was speechless and told me that until that moment he had no idea he could be a bigger fan of the man than he was at that moment.

It is the sincerity of this moment that makes it so human and so very very moving.

This moment is on my short list of “things to watch whenever I need my soul renewed.” Respect given and given in return. Ving Rhames will forever be a legend for this and his career is powerful, yet understated, just like him. Some Like It Hot was on regular rotation on VHS in my house growing up, and Jack Lemmon will go down as one of the greats. Thanks to both of those men for giving the room and the world that moment.

Seeing actors who are now passed and others when they were young. This made me feel old!

Jack Lemmon could be the best film actor of all time. Ving Rhames I think was in awe he won the award over Lemmon. Not only is Rhames a great actor but a beautiful person for doing this.

They're both great actors in their own right, but Jack Lemmon has been in so many amazing movies, and been so good in them, well I honestly think that's why he gave it to him

What that would be up to Cuba to do that, it should always be a choice, James wood is an excellent Actor and has been in quite a few movies, In fact I just saw him in Videodrome, plus the guy is crazy smart with an IQ of 180 something I think, but guess what Cuba is a great Actor to and he's been in a plenty of movies too

Class act human being, that is what he is. Man, where did it all go? It is all a mess today. If I could go back in time, I would, in a heartbeat.

I've always been a fan of Ving Rhames.. I had no idea that he ever made such a selfless gesture like this. Wow.
