In 2012, at the end of their tether, Jack Monroe wrote a blog detailing the depths of the bitter poverty they had fallen into. After going viral, the post catapulted Jack from the brink of despair and into the spotlight.
In a raw and exploratory interview, Jack takes James O’Brien through struggling to making ends meet, the realities of austerity in Britain, identifying as a non-binary and preferring the pronoun ‘they’, and their legal battle with Katie Hopkins. | JOE.co.uk

At 26.55 the real question is asked! Apparently he's a brilliant man - has a 'job and a life' and has been around for 50/50 childcare. So why does Jack allow her and her son to sink to such depths of poverty and blame the system? Ring this brilliant man up and ask for a fiver a day to help purchase some food! This 'bitter poverty' story doesn't make sense.

It makes even less sense when you learn that her wealthy, supportive parents lived around the corner. As did her millionaire grandad. Her whole backstory is fake, she’s nothing more than a cluster B grifter.

This is so contradictory. It’s a very old-fashioned idea that women are ‘feminine’ & men are ‘masculine’. For a long time now, that’s been viewed as a sexist, regressive attitude, and I completely agree with JM about the princess dress. I used to work with young children & met plenty of little boys who loved dressing-up in fairy dresses and sparkles. I think that’s fantastic. Of course a boy can wear princess dresses if he wants to. So why does JM feel that she’s ‘different’ to everyone else? She says it’s because she considers herself quite ‘masculine’, and that this is the logic behind ‘being trans’. How is it ridiculous to make a fuss about a boy doing something supposedly ‘feminine’, like wearing a dress… but logical to make a fuss about a woman having what she describes as ‘masculine’ mannerisms or clothes? Makes no sense.

I appreciate and believe what she is saying but don't understand this hunger/poverty thing. Would love to know how long was it? Why was it so bad with both parents working? Why children had to work 12 miles back home? Didn't their parents have any friends who could collect the children? All this when children were in grammar school? I am sorry but it doesn't make much sense. It is from me, the person who knows what it is living in poverty in a new country, without family or friends and knowing language well. We used to go to markets before their closed and pick slightly rotten fruit and veggies that vendors were throwing away. I must say that what she says about poverty doesn't make much sense to me, the person who knew it and doesn't talk much about it.

57:39 isn't that worse than a genuine ignorant ideologue though? I'd rather argue with somebody who I know is simply lacking knowledge and experience to come to a more informed understanding or opinion than a fraud who has built up a 'persona' (read LIE) to appeal to the worst impulse in other people simply for financial gain. It's quite despicable really, and I'd say mentally and physically unhealthy and unsustainable, to live such a lie in the long-term.

I was just curious what profound examples from the past to present we can use when it comes to defeating poverty. So many countries lived in abject poverty just after WW2 and now flourish. Hong Kong comes to mind as a prime example. How is it that some peoples flourish, whilst others suffer? Knowing the answer to that question can truly help those in dire straits.
@johnwright9372

I have lived in Hong Kong for almost 40 years. You obviously think everyone there is doing well. 23% of the population lives in poverty. 80,000 families live in subdivided rathole flats. The minimum wage is just over £3 per hour, there is no universal pension and private residential property prices are the most inflated and unaffordable in the world.

Utter crap, my friend is a school finance manager in a poor area in a failing school and she would be the first to see real poverty in relation to children. One single mum brings a huge packed lunch for her two chubby boys and yet she's entitled to free school meals. I have single mums on benefit living across from me, they look happy and bouncy. Benefits are universal, so "misery"should be the same regardless, living in a city or in a cosy village.

The scribes spoke of genetics in terms as we all know as adam/Eve etc, though species procreation be the mantra. I, as a simpleton then, am of the rather simplistic conclusion, woman and or man, should and can be with in any context any consenting human of there choice. Simples

Jack Monroe seems to be making perfectly logical deductions. Gender in so far as the social ascription of roles on the basis of sex, is certainly socially constructed- however, some of the traits assigned, are based on the average differences created by sex hormones (aggression horniness physical strength and testosterone for example)

Interesting person but had to keep winding back to re-listen as Mr O'Brien continually interrupts before Jack completes a sentence. This annoying trait is demonstrated every day on his radio programme. Hope his wife continues to check him on this and hopefully his technique will improve.

Gender isn't separate from sex. Male and female culture is rooted in biology and is not purely created from our minds. If gender was separate from biology we wouldn't use the words masculine and feminine to describe gender. When we describe someones gender we aren't talking about their mannerisms or personality but their biological sex because biological sex is the basis or source of gender, not gender the source of biological sex.
@alidee5448
@alidee5448 6 жыл бұрын
Actually society has moved on from that. Being the highly evolved and (mostly) intelligent primates that we are, we have a fantastic gift for abstraction. Therefore while sex is biological, and the basis for society's 2 primary gender definitions, we can also understand that many folk do not fall neatly (or at all) in to either. Most folk manage to accept people the way they are without worrying what bits and pieces they're carrying in their pants.

Actually that's wrong. One of the biggest additions that queer theory has made is the idea of sex, our sexual biology essentialising our gender. That as one person has a vagina, they are thus more effeminate, weaker, emotional or better suited to domesticated work, but in fact there is also the fact that what men and women were socially expected to do is what they were to become, because it was natural in their biology. In fact, people are not simply a man or a woman in a biological sense but also that they perform these expected roles that comes with possessing those gentials. Not everyone fits neatly into these binary (that is, man/woman, without any difference in between) categories of what is expected of them by society, because they are historically and socially constructed and influenced by power relations of who actually gets to define what is and isn't the right behaviour for a man or a woman. Being non-binary is thus saying that you may be sexually a female but you do not recognise that you find your gender identity through what is socially constructed in a way that is female. It is really interesting, I reccommend you read Gender Trouble by Judith Butler, or failing that the one-sex, two-sex theory. For a very long time in western tradition, men and women were not differentiated through sexual difference in the way we do today. Women's gentials were perceived as the same as men's just inverted and internal to the body, rather than biologically different. Since medicinal advances, claims for *inherent* biological difference between men and women were proposed and have been internalised as natural markers of difference and justification for the roles men and women have/had developed in the centuries previously. This is what people mean when they say gender is 'performative' for it isn't something that is dependent completely on nature but is nurtured through the dominant expectations of society for how we should behave.
@brendanbutler1238
@brendanbutler1238 6 жыл бұрын
Gender still comes from biology and is not purely a social or individual construct or performance. If it were people could say my gender is mod or rocker, or new romantic, ie something totally cultural and separate from biology, a peformance or cultural construct. Because gender comes from biological sex, and because biological sex is binary and fixed, then it is nonsensical for a person, or society to claim that someone is a different gender to their biology, no matter what their personality or culture is like.
@Josh-ek8qq
@Josh-ek8qq 6 жыл бұрын
Gender, as you construct it, is constructed on a belief that sexual biology controls gender, but it has become clear that the binary of penis = male gender is restrictive. Being a mod or a rocker is a part of your identity which is what gender is. Being a mod is something you do by looking a certain way to outsiders. Just like being a woman is something you are biologically, by possessing a uterus, womb, breasts etc. But it is also something you are, by how you behave and are conditioned and expected to behave. Being a mod, you have to behave in a certain way otherwise you become outside of that group. Or you could enjoy dressing like a mod, be perceived as a mod, but not identify as a mod - It is simply the way you naturally enjoy dressing. Likewise if a woman doesn't act in a way that is perceived to be womanly, she is 'butch' or not behaving as she is expected. Gender theory seeks to liberate people from these associated expectations by accepting we are all not definitively within the category male or female, but also suggests these are categorically useless terms for *identity* and that the categories of what makes someone male or female is constantly being redefined and appropriated (refer to two-sex theory for most obvious example). Currently society defines gender biologically, Thus how we are expected to behave is determined through a paradigm of gender being based on our biological make-up. Yes, certain traits are determined by biology, but that doesn't mean that women can't do this job, or men are bound to be more likely to commit suicide. These issues reflect discrepancies between what we feel we are and identify as and what society tells us we should be like. Gender theory, queer theory, feminist theory etc., (indeed just the existence of non-binary or trans people) show that there are alternatives to these binaries of man/woman, gay/straight if we redefine how we categorise and hierarchise not only our language, but also our society. But doing that comes from accepting that social processes have a role in shaping our sexual identity and behaviour, rather than it being wholly biologically determined, an essentially unchanging thing. Deviation from the binaries to most people suggests abnormality or deficiency in individuals rather than a fault in our categorisation of people as either men/women .
