Hear the cheer when it was announced? Everyone in that room knew he deserved to win for one of the greatest English-speaking performances in movie history. Louise Fletcher deservedly won Best Actress as well for playing a character who is utterly evil but is even more terrifying because she genuinely believes she is doing good. For The Shining NO WAY. De Niro won that year for Raging Bull and I think that's the greatest performence by an actor in a leading role. I was an usher at the 1984 Academy Awards at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion the year he was nominated and won Best Supporting Actor for "Terms of Endearment." I showed Jack to his seat, wished him "Good Luck" and offered him a handshake - which he was happy to shake, telling me "Thank You." A class act and as cool as never before. It was a moment I'll never forget.

Pacino's performance was more daring and is the best of his career. It was already his 4th nomination. But it was Jack's 5th. It was his time and Cukoos Nests' year. They both were great.
