They were originally bred for hunting by the Reverend John Russell.

James Leonard However, if I may butt in! Lol In those days, most of them had longer legs, hence the expression Parson J Russell, after the clergyman in question! And bred for ratting and hunting! Still very much used to track down rats 🐀 by farmers! Can be dodgy if a JR gets bitten though! My (now deceased sadly) short haired JR actually caught 2 rats out in the garden, due to bad rain! Killed them immediately! But I didn’t want him to make a habit of it - lol lovely little dogs, with SO much character and full of intelligence 😆😆😆 🐕🐕💕💕🇬🇧 xx
