Fantastic, Jack. Really beautiful sounds here, especially those slow movements of the filter cutoff. I look forward to you exploring the PolyBrute in the same way! And while I don't think it's as nice overall as the Super 6, I think you might appreciate exploring the polyphonic aftertouch and multiple filter types of the HydraSynth. Thanks for this!

The Super 6 is amazing to me. Idk which firmware you're on, but the v0.26 has a "drift" feature. It's easy to fall into "sweet zones" where every tweak sounds like a new preset. One day, I spent 8+ hours programming sounds on mine without touching many of the extensive features. This thing is immersive, has a ton of depth, and character of its own.

In our wee studio we are fortunate to have a few synths including a Super 6 and a Summit. We turn to the Summit as we know what we are going to get, it is a real workhorse, well organised, predictable, great sounding and gets you there, wherever there may be, quickly. The Super 6 is more unpredictable, which is so inspiring and you are never quite sure what is going to pop out, but it usually sounds great. We have a couple of mono Moogs, a Matriach and a Sirin, the Sirin sounds lovely - it does a few sounds, but does them sooo well. The Matriarch is fun, though the hidden parameters are really annoying, so it probably gets used less than the others. Our keyboard player loves the Super 6 - I'm less capable with the fingers and turn more towards the Summit - both are really enjoyable.

For myself, I ended up choosing the PolyBrute, but I have to agree there is something extremely special about the Super6 and the way the sounds drift organically around the stereo spectrum. There is a video called Super6: Ambient Pads that I keep coming back to because I’ve never heard anything like it.
@halodust13043 жыл бұрын
That's the video that opened my wallet for the Super 6! I loved the morph on the Polybrute but just thought the basic sound was a bit thin.
@modalmixture3 жыл бұрын
@@halodust1304 I thought so too originally, but I have since seen some demos that put the Polybrute in a different light -- GEOsynths has a good video showing some gorgeous thick gritty stereo patches.

@matszh3 жыл бұрын
The level of control for live performances on the Polybrute, with the Morphee-pad, touch-strip and 5 octave AT keyboard, makes it hard to beat in that area. Then again, the Super 6 seams so easy to get great sounds from, which is important ”for the fun of it”. Wouldn’t mind 5 octaves though. For me though, the Phantom or the Montage would be a wiser choise, as I only make music at home, in a more ”real instruments” kind of way. Then there is the Nord Wave 2 too, as a Jack of all trades, or the Prophets for the nostalgia...Nah, actually the best investment is the time to improve my playing skills, as always :)
@modalmixture3 жыл бұрын
For me, the interface is just as important as the sound. I find tactile interfaces, like Nord and Arturia and Sequential tend to have (and the Super6 too), more fun and inspiring to play compared to touchscreen driven synths like the Montage/Kronos. It feels more like playing a real instrument, with the sound design being part of the performance rather than something to be programmed in advance. But you do lose some versatility.

This was my second choice in a poly synth. I instead went with Moog One , mostly because I really wanted the option to split the heyboard and I've always been a huge Moog fan. Moog One was initially disappointing and almost all the presets underwhelm me but once you start digging into it, it is such a magical synth with endless options and it is capable of amazing sounds once you scratch the surface and realize it isn't like anything else. It's certainly a synth that you will always be discovering something new with. I've heard good things from people that own the super 6 as well! I know people that own both and think they are the two best modern poly's

I LOVE that fact that we're getting these bonkers, super passion project flagship synths, with so many actual new ideas from them, that are not coming from any of the big named companies. These are all auteur, small-team projects, that are just leaning into what it means to innovate and love synthesis design. Hydrasynth, Super 6, and now PolyBrute. Amazing time to either get into synthesis or for old-timers, to rediscover that love again when quality and uniqueness were what was regularly on offer. I want synths to find their heyday again and all strive to be different, high-quality machines that have character and soul and whatever other adjectives that help define the output of a synth to just give it that 'yeah' aspect. Make me spend more money. I do wish, if I had but one, that both the Hydrasynth and the Super 6 were at least 61-keys. 49 is too few. Especially when the design begs you to double-fist some huge chords across a wide range.

I love your approach to this review, you know what to highlight to show what makes it “different” or “unique” which is exactly what I look for, not just comparing oscillators and filters to different synths. I’ve been really interested in the Summit, PolyBrute and Prologue 16 so would be great to see these. Cheers.

Actually, my Argon8 can already do a lot, sounds great and the app integration is flawless, but as I've seen how much simpler and straightforward the Nord Wave 2 is to use, I'm really saving towards that one now. I already own a Nord Drum and it's a pure joy to use, figuring everything out took maybe 2 hours and then you're got to go and create your unique own sounds, independent from Presets, it's so much fun. So I'd like to have that in a big polysynth as well and I think the Nord Wave 2 is far superior even to the Novation Peak (which already is quite intuitive and user friendly).

I'm 1 week into owning a Super 6, and I can't believe how much fun I've had playing a brass pad. I hate sampled brass, but this just sounds so fat, juicy and satisfying! I've worked my way through most of the manual and all the presets and learned how it all works. My 2 complaints would be that I do miss having a mod wheel, but one could argue that this thing is "nothing but mod wheels". And while no display is admirable, tracking down modulation connections is impossible. I may have to buy the editor software just for that. Making the connections is very easy, but reverse engineering an existing patch is tough. So far, I love it.

The PolyBrute's matrix arp and morphing, big wood ribbon, easier to keep track of mod routings. When the S6 is in 12 voice mode, you get forced alternate voice panning, which is a weird choice. But with the Super binaural stuff, the S6 sounds like angels singing, which might be the deciding factor.

I really love this synthesizer. One thing I don´t understand though is the fact, that the Hold Mode for the Arpeggiator just adds more notes to the Arpeggio, instead of just changing the chords when you hit a new one. I find this behaviour really unwanted and for me personally, that´s a big minus, because I love holding and changing arpeggiated chords and alter the sound of the synth while it plays. I hope it will be solved in the firmware sometime.

Clearly it is unique sounding, but its also seeming limited.... I have a rev2 16V and I just wonder if it can do some of the bread and butter stuff you want a poly synth to do. Rev2 16V is a workhorse this is a unicorn..... great review and at least your doing some good patches, as other reviews seem to focus on SC-FI sounds if you know what I mean. Thanks Jack...

Oh cheers David, appreciate the kind comment mate. Defo gonna check out the Rev2 again, was the most inspiring Dave Smith synth I’ve ever played when I tried it out a few years back. Feel it gets over looked so will defo give it a good once over as I love what James Blake and Radiohead do with it!! X

@@jackduxburymusic I guess its worth noting Jack that one of the advantages of a 3 year old synth like REV2 is what has been learnt. What I mean is that initially REV2 was considered cold etc by some, but now 3 years later people have had time to explore its vast (CRAZY VAST) modulation capabilities. May I direct you to you tube channel CREATIVE SPIRAL and his amazing use of the the REV2 sequencer as a mod source to create micro voice tuning variations creating wonderful "vintage knob" like warmth. Also the ROBUST AMERICAN PATCHES 1 and 2 (not affiliated) is a quick way to become familiar with the current state of REV2's amazing versatility in sound now people have had time to explore its possibilities. Obviously Polybrute is a current standout and actually reminds me of REV2 in terms of it is clearly a synth of great depth and a wide range of possibilities, again a workhorse synth. My next synth is probably a choice between Polybrute and the elusive OB-6 as I think REV2 has all other bases covered but that will be a few years given the prices .

this, waldorf synths, the d-50, the hydrasynth, and the microkorg are probably the best-sounding digital synths. (the microkorg is not nearly as professional and only has 4 oscillators but its "lofi" grittiness sounds good imo)

I looked long and hard at a Super 6. Went for a Modal 002 in the end - would love to hear your comparisons of the two, though I guess ultimately this is designed to help people choose which of the synths you sell is right for them, and the 002 is discontinued. Poly Brute has to be in there fo sho. Waldorf Quantum maybe? I'd go Super 6 in your shoes if you are choosing from current models only.

Jack, did you buy one? I’ve been waiting 4 months to vicariously shop through you (Australia’s C_vid incompetence means we are 3 months into a lockdown) Please fuel my GAS from home, I thought this was a mad idea for a series, super relatable and we get to head mad flagship synths put to the test! Hopefully the new innovations from UDO announced at superbooth soon will spark your interest!
