Yes it’s somewhat a caricature, but kids like this exist, and need our love and support. I was one of these kids in the mid 80s (without the purse), and bullied mercilessly.
@DKSanX

Yeah this is why we need lgbtq lessons in schools. Many kids may not act like jack and john but many more still get harassed and tortured for being different. Once you let bigoted parent teach the youth itll take many more decade before kid like yourself or jack can live happy lives without fear.

I was 12 and it was my first day at a new school. Somehow he knew I was gay and proceeded to take off my shoes and threw them over the fence. He was my bully until I left high school (which I never completed). He died in his sleep a few years ago and I never got to tell him how much he made my life miserable. I still have nightmares (just turned 39) about being bullied when I'm really stressed... something about feeling helpless seems to trigger those nightmares.

I think the best part of this is when Jack says, ‘I’m not getting into that with you, you’re like 10!’ His boundaries are well defined and he gives great general advice without condescending or being too flagrant. Chefs kiss Jack.

I was always bullied. Of course, as an adult that changed. Then once I went to a little cousin birthday (she really liked me) and I saw little boy by himself in a corner. I had to tell my cousin to go to him and made him feel welcomed...which she did. ...I felt, for that moment,as that bullied kid and, at the same time, since I grew out of it, empowered enough to do something about it. It was a weird feeling.

@@drjanines3301 That's just not true! Society looks down on age. The older you get, the harder it is for just about everything in life whether it be making friends, changing careers, etc. In the case of gay men, age is the worst thing possible because they have made it into a youth oriented (as well as looks) society. Jack was the perfect example of this in the show.

@gypsyrock thanks for your response but it’s not interpersonal drama that has me comparing life to high school, more so that the world is incredibly predictable and straight out of central casting. We already know who is popular who is favored and disfavored and the level of superficiality is even more intense post high school. I have yet to be surprised only disappointed at the level of banality we succumb to, friends or no friends I’m afraid. Indeed perhaps we had radically different high school experiences where we existed in different circles and therefore perceive ourselves and our surroundings differently.

I don't know how there are still people who believe that some kids are born gay. This is about as obvious an example of a learned behavior as you can get. Gay is a subculture that appeals to a certain kind of person, who for lack of a better term, I'll call 'assholes'.

If you think being straight or gay is a choice, then you're not straight at all: you're a bisexual in denial. Straight people don't have to struggle to 'not be gay' the same way gay people can't make themselves straight. There are many kids who desperately attempted to try to force themselves to be straight and it unsurprisingly didn't work and they killed themselves because of it, back in the 80s and earlier. It's not a lifestyle, it's an orientation. "Gay subculture" is safety through numbers that they were forced to create because of your kind of people and worse. How the heck are you not a confused ghost from the 80s with this outdated attitude.

He was getting picked on for being gay. Jack is trying to make him feel better. They never talked about sex.

Did we watch the same scene? The one about bullying, play-writing and an adult stepping in to protect a kid? The one that did not mention gay sex, nor alluded to it once? No? Actually... the scene DID allude to sex, but in the context of a kid giving birth at the prom. Funny that didn't bother you...
