That’s a myth. The notch was there so that the machine used to transfer the information could hold the tags in place. It essentially stamped the dog tag on paper whilst covered in ink so that the info on the tags could be added to the records. Around the time of late Vietnam, dog tags had no notch because the machines didn’t need them.

The notch was not for putting the dog tag in the mouth of the dead. The notch was used to keep the blank dog tag aligned on the machine while the letters were being stamped into the metal.

I Salute this Hero. But the notch in the dog tags is for graves registration--who after battles etc. pick up or get all the dead bodies, and it started in WW2 where graves registration had a large hand neld machine like a credit card slider that copied the dog tag onto paper, the notch was to properly fit in the copier machine. And yes the 1`dog` tag`1s 1did ``som1eti11me1s go in 1te boot laces or mouth if needed to be.
