Another great recreation, very atmospheric. The moon was waning on 30 Sept, only 30% visible. So it would have been v dark, amazing that he could see what he was doing

This is outstanding work. It would give anybody a good idea of the feel, atmosphere, and the visual appearance of Mitre Square. It also shows just how cunning the Ripper was to work in such shadows.

This is amazing but blimey it just goes to show how dark the streets were in Whitechapel...No wonder he got away with it.

It is very dark at night and no doubt would have been even darker back then but it still begs a lot of questions regarding how JTR could have done it because bear in mind that this area was REGULARLY patrolled by police due to having valuable goods in the warehouses there, so it still seems very odd that an incident of any kind could have happened without any police officers seeing or at least hearing anything, it was a relatively small, square area even back in those days, and yet, somehow, JTR managed to not only kill his victim but then cut her open in such a way that would require a lot of time and probably some skill too, so, something doesn't quite add up. Either, there were some terribly incompetent police officers back then who patrolled in their sleep or JTR must have been able to move like the clappers, I mean, we're talking almost superhuman speed here...that is...of course...presuming that JTR wasn't one of the police officers 🤔

@@JohnCashin To do that in the dark and so quickly must have meant some kind of anatomical knowledge. In terms of location, Jack was savvy who knew the area well and was no doubt local. The police officers at that time goes to show they were rubbish back then.

He had to have had accomplices. In almost all the murders, there were far too many risks. In the case of Mitre square, i believe the woman and man that were spotted at the entrance of Church passage, were lookouts, not Jack and his victim. I think he chose to murder his victims by gates, because this would have been an easy escape if he heard footsteps coming. And in the case of Marie Kelly in Miller's court, it would have only taken a concerned neighbour to spot him through the curtain, especially after the cry of murder came form Kelly's room. So someone must have been scanning the area while he carried out his work. I think it was a government operation to scare people off the streets, as crime and prostitution was rife in 1888.

I know I kept referring to the lantern as a bulldog lantern! sorry, it's a BULLSEYE lantern. Sheesh! Also, make sure you are viewing full screen and in HD if you can. thanks

This is fantastic! There should be no more debate as to what PC was where, viewing what. It's all moot. You practically had to trip over Eddowes' body before you saw her. The PCs lantern lights didn't penetrate the blackness until you were within 5 to 10 feet of the body. And as for escape, Jack had the massive odds. He could melt back into that darkness and be within feet of a copper. Jack was smiling at that.

Incredible isn't it. As p.c James Harvey walked down church passage jack would have been about 15 or 20 yards directly in front of him murdering Catherine. So if the constable couldn't see them both from that close then it must have been pitch black. And yet he was still able to do his terrible crime. Whether he was just randomly cutting things out or whether he knew where her kidney was is a matter for debate. Myself i think he may have worked as a butcher or slaughterer at some point in his life. But not being an expert on anatomy or seeing the victims it's just a guess. Maybe he just used his hands to feel about whilst commiting the crime. One thing is certain is the risks he took. He was extremely luck not to have been caught. And was seen by 3 independent witnesses.

I don't think it was really this dark. There would have been natural light even though it was 1am. The clouds always reflect some of the city lights. Plus, your eyes adapt so I think it would have been a bit brighter, but still quite dark. Great recreation.

One way to pin down the Ripper is to identify his wife. One hypnotist claims to have found her. See the Hypno-Archaeologist by Philip Ditchfield.
