The crazy thing about SNA is that it's kind of like a stock turnaround, the sort of melody you'd use to bring a song from the end of a chorus back into the verse, but just the choice in itself to make it the main hook that drives the entire song makes it one of the most original riffs ever. "Hit The Road, Jack" (heheh, Jack) does a similar thing.

Riffs are cool. They encapsulate the feeling of the song. Just because it’s difficult to play, doesn’t mean it’s better, it means it is inefficient. With this logic and argument you are saying that riffs like the one from Seven Nation Army and Smoke on Water are superior over all the other more complicated legendary riffs out there. Or that Mary had a little Lamb or the ABCD are more superior melodies then the more intricate melodies that people over 5 prefer, because everybody gets those songs and remember them.

You've missed the point, and taken an exaggeration to a ridiculous conclusion. Making something great that is also simple is harder than making something great that is complicated. Perhaps beyond the royalties and the recognition, having a piece of art outlive you and outshine you can be one of the greatest honors an artist may have.

That’s usually that “secret” ingredient to a famous tune: that the writer didn’t go out to write a “viral” song. It just came from a genuine place. And that honesty and purity the listeners can hear it and feel connected with the music. Which is why most pop music these days don’t have that lasting connection. Because the creators just set out to write the song with the thinking of wanting it to be huge by using tried formulas and chord progressions. That honesty of just making music isn’t there. And the result is you get pretty disposable pop that don’t stand the test of time.

So I’m a guitarist who attempts to write songs. As musicians we try to be clever, earnest and often show off ability when trying to come up with something and forget the most important thing. “The listener!” The average person in the street has not idea if you’re playing in mixolydian or Dorian mode or how that clever use of a borrowed chord elevates your composition to Zappa levels of harmonic understanding! Jack White saved rock and roll in the early and mid aughts. Thanks! Also, Sona and Matt are more attractive in person than over the air. Sorry Conan

Every time I watched an old video with Jack White in it I would yell at the TV… Comb your hair and get a haircut. I knew he was gorgeous underneath that giant mess. And he is gorgeous, and extremely talented and very much loved by his fans. ✂️💚💙💜

This dude is legit like "I want this song to go down in history" and truly doesn't care if he goes down with it. That is artistry.

As a musician, I have always wanted to write something that ubiquitous. I really think stuff like that is in the ether and certain people just channel it. What an incredible, amazing thing to have happen to you. It's the Ironman riff for another generation. It's basically the same scale played backwards!

My drill instructor at marine boot camp used this song to teach us how to March to that drum beat. Left foot on that heavy drum 🥁

The first time I heard this riff was when they debuted it on Late Night with Conan. I believe the White Stripes were the resident artist for a week, debuting one or two songs per night.

Jack White is a rare true musician. Few people are still digging deep and breaking new ground 25+ years into their artistic journey. His 3 most recent albums are next level.

The fact he didn’t know means he didn’t intentionally set out to write an anthem. Probably why it went so deep into eternal anthem so smoothly.

Jack seems refreshingly grounded. Certainly a lot more than his bizarro Riddler look would suggest ;)

So many great guitarists out there but only Jack White came up with that simple riff. Simple but so damn effective.
@spankygrant Жыл бұрын
But isn't that the dream of every great guitar player , to create that simple yet timeless riff? lol. I imagine so many riffs that get put away because they might think it is too simple.
@danman6669 Жыл бұрын
If you notice, many of the best songs ever usually are based off of one simple riff. Smoke on the Water and Under Pressure, are two others that immediately come to mind.

The fact the record company didn’t want it to be a single is astonishing.
@spankygrant Жыл бұрын
But how could they know either it would connect so much with people? Have seen this happen to so many bands where a B-side of a single becomes bigger then A-side. lol
@danman6669 Жыл бұрын
It actually happens more than you'd assume. I can't think of any songs off the top of my head, but there have been hit songs that never would have been hits if the record company had its way and never released them.
@almahperditae Жыл бұрын
For me, the story that perfectly shows how much record companies knows about music, was when some kids make a rock band, and they try to sign to some company. Every single one of them rejected them. But One of the them, even say to the kids why. Because they where a rock band, and electric guitars where out of fashion, and it won't sell anymore. Rock was dead. No one cared anymore. Well... I think everyone knows this story. The kids who have a rock band where the Beatles.
