As a vinyl head, that’s the only reason I care about this release - to get a physical copy of Camille. I like the idea of the Estate outsourcing some low hanging fruit like this so they can focus on bigger projects. So I’m with you on it not being an Estate priority but still wanting this release.

Agree with all your points on why we don't need a "Camille" album. Since we already have access to all those songs, I'd much rather get songs that haven't been released yet that are just idling away in the vault. I like vinyl and have a few Prince albums on vinyl, but the most important aspect to me is having access to as much of Prince's entire catalog as possible.

Just saying…Me too. I have been a Prince fan since Soft And Wet came out when I was a kid. I bought all the vinyl as it came out. I bought “Good Love” on the Bright Lights album, and the rest of the songs came out already. I have been a fan from the beginning, all I need is vault stuff.

Yes, I agree 100%. I'm so over Purple Rain Megalopolos Release version 15. Let's face it: the vast majority of Prince music is going to be purchased by his current fans. You have to appeal to the target audience and give us new music. Purple Rain was good but it's almost 40 years old. Prince made tons of music after that time period. Give us the new stuff

I see it as a record day release. Not only is White an advocate for Vinyl, he's done special LPs for that event. This seems tailor made for that, as it's going to appeal to collectors (which isn't me: I'm a digital music guy). I'm a big fan of Jack White, & he's expressed his admiration for Prince a number of times over the years.

as a vinyl person, I'm pretty excited about this also the only qualm I have about the playlist route, and it's not really the biggest deal but just a little nitpick, is that each of those individual tracks were mastered and balanced in completely different contexts and not mastered/edited in such a way to be intended as the cohesive experience that a true "Camille" album would be like maybe this is an audiophile type thing, but the slightly different masters and slight difference in sound kinda conceptually bothers me just a little bit, that it makes me excited to actually experience the way it was supposed to be, instead of just approximating it with the playlist that being said, I do have a Camille reconstruction playlist that I made awhile ago lmaoo

I've wanted to see what the Camille album would look like ever since I read about it in Per Nilson's 90s Prince chronology book. A good amount of Prince's music is in the category of Erotic City--a hit song in need of an album. That said, the visuals Prince was giving at the time are exactly what made me a fan. When I was a kid, I would be in a music store or a music section of a big box store, and I would see a lot of the 12-inch singles and things from Prince, and I would just get lost inside that world of "what could the visual I'm looking at tell me about the song I'm seeing before me?" When I got older and could afford to buy those 12-inchers myself, I did and the audio seemed to speak to the imagery I was seeing. Also, I watched an Andre Cymone clip the other day, the story he told about Prince summoning him to Paisley to listen to the record (Crystal Ball), and he said that there were four records. What else is there?

I can not give this a bigger stamp of approval. I had every one of Prince's albums by the time I was fifteen, then Purple Rain come out, I had an E ticket to ride. I was a huge fan. Prince is the one who inspired me to start to learn how to play, piano, guitar, harmonica, bass anything I could get my hands on. That being said, I am also a huge Jack White fan. To me his music hits most of the sounds that I grew up listening to and still his music stands on its own. As I aged I listened to more punk, grunge, and rock. I was inspired by the Punk movement and the garage tapes we made and I was wished cut records, and help bands that started up, that is how we tried to do it, cheap at every show. So, in a way Jack is doing everything, I wish I had. With Third Man and his other four bands he has created and counting, I am very excited that he has that same passion for Prince, I have. I see a great deal of Prince and Bowie in Jack. I'm just happy to be down for the ride.

I suspect it’ll be a limited vinyl release like a RSD day thing, so assuming it has artwork and liner notes I understand why someone would want a physical copy of it (for CD and vinyl). Also, nerdy technicality here so allow me to adjust my glasses. The version of Rebirth Of The Flesh on Camille is an edit, and not the version we got on the SOTT super deluxe and remains unreleased. The version of Feel U Up is the full version from the 12inch Partyman single and hasn’t been released on any digital format (CD or streaming). Basically some tracks are SLIGHTLY different than ones widely available. Same goes for Dream Factory and the original Crystal Ball. All in all, this sounds like a super limited production release that won’t make it to the general public (i.e. streaming) and will be like what they did for the SOTT singles box set. In that sense, I really don’t mind they’re putting this out there. I won’t buy it, but I understand why they’re doing it.

I've had a Camille playlist (and even burned CDs) since the 1990s. Call me old-fashioned (or old), but that's not remotely the same as having a proper, professionally pressed and produced CD or LP. I've been musing the last few days about an alternate universe where March 1987 saw the release of an abbreviated Crystal Ball (sans Camille tracks), followed by Camille that December (rather than the Black Album - maybe some of those tracks could have been B-sides to Camille???). The downside of that alt-timeline is that Lovesexy would probably not exist, since Cathy Glover and Ingrid Chavez both have confirmed that it was essentially penance for Prince after Blue Tuesday. But, that opens the possibility that an album we know nothing about or have never conceived of replaces Lovesexy???

Having the tracks and listening to them in that order is all well and good. You could make playlists of any of our Prince's work. But would you say that the person with the 1999 songs on a playlist has had the same experience as the person who bought the physical LP? What makes me sad is that while, yes, I want the Camille album, I want to know what the full presentation would have been under Prince's direction? What would he have wanted the cover to look like? What would he have had printed on the sleeve or in the liner notes? That's the tragedy. We will probably never know. However, if the people with access to the Vault and other archives have any information suggesting what Prince would have wanted for the rest of the presentation, then yeah, I want that. It doesn't need to be put into the official canon or something, but as a little collector's item it's totally fine - and that's the type of thing that White's label is about anyway. Neat-to-haves for the fans and collectors. If anything though I'd be more interested in a reconstruction of something like the original Crystal Ball or Dream Factory, since they actually do feel like lost albums - instead of something that Prince was pondering about for a fortnight. Especially DF would be cool, since we don't have all the transitions in high quality to recreate it on our own (and also because it's personal favourite of the Revolution era), but I'm not losing any sleep over it. But if we get a Camille then we'll certainly get those too at some point, I figure.
@hernandezZ_322 жыл бұрын
I would love that. I really hope that they will also outsource Dream Factory and Crystal Ball to Third Man for them to release it, or maybe release them on streaming platforms only to avoid the cost of a full production, for those that are interested to listen. There is nothing to recreate for these albums though. Michael Howe said in an interview that both of these albums were found completely finished and exist in their entirety. Its just about pulling the tapes, remaster them, and release them. Pretty straight forward if they are in good shape. Its just about finding the demand I think, especially Dream Factory from June 3 is a must-have and beautiful listen!

@@hernandezZ_32 I'd say, if we're honestly getting an official pressing of Camille this early in the game, then we can safely assume that the demand for the other albums is there as well. I have a playlist on my iPod that recreates the Camille album. It sounds good. I think Prince should have released the Camille album because it's pretty unique the concept of a male singer making an album as a female alter ego and sounding like her. It would have been a standout thing and so I'm glad that now the album is probably gonna be officially released. I think it adds coolness to his discography. Then he could have released Sign O' The Times too replacing Housquake, Strange Relationship and If I Was Your Girlfriend with other tracks. It's weird that he did Cosmic Day and, a couple of years later, Partyman, with the Camille voice; but they were not intended for inclusion in the Camille album.
@Gabriel_7072 жыл бұрын
I think it's also weird that for instance in Feel U Up the lyrics are obviously made for a male singer (beby come on, let me "Fill U Up") but Prince is playing a female role. Same thing for PartyMAN.
@hernandezZ_322 жыл бұрын
Camille is not a female alter-ego. Camille is male, it was confirmed by Prince himself in the Lovesexy tourbook, where also photos of the the Camille character exists (the ones with the extreme make-up on the blue background). The female alter-ego thing is a misinterpretation of the voice-pitch which still hasnt been put aside, and it is a shame that even the official SOTT super deluxe liner notes by Andrea Svensson state that Camille is female... Cosmic Day is not a Camille song, because the voice is pitched in an entirely different register and also does not match the musical style, it is just a one-off experiment. U Got The Look and Scarlet Pussy are also by Camille btw. He pitched his voice several times, also on Erotic City years before, but the Camille character is tied to the 1986-1987 period, where he started with the Camille album and ended with the Black Album. Camille is a reflection of a spiritual "division" (as Prince kind of put it), which also caused his rejection of the Black Album as he deemed it evil. This topic was explored on the Lovesexy tour where the first half of the show saw Prince's dark side (even with the appearance of Camille, with Prince introducing himself as Camille to the audience), and then his redemption after the performance of Anna Stesia into the second set. The track Partyman has nothing to do with Camille in that sense, and is just a track with a pitched up voice, the way he continued to use the technique even into the 2000's, like Ol' Skool Company from 2009's MPLSound. I hope I could clear some things up a bit and explain you the whole thing with Camille, because I see this assumption a lot that Camille is female, even on official articles from big magazines which I find misleading...

@@hernandezZ_32 Well if it's true thanks for the informations. I already knew that U Got The Look, Scarlet Pussy, Erotic City, Ol' Skool Company etc... were altered in the vocals, just didn't mentioned them. Actually you're right, Cosmic Day has a higher pitch than the one by Camille. Wonder why he called his male alter ego with a female name though. And do you think Prince is playing a female role in If I Was Your Girlfriend?
@hernandezZ_322 жыл бұрын
@@Gabriel_707 Camille is a unisex name, and also the french version of the name Kamil that is often given in Poland and the Czech Republic. There was actually a movie character which inspired Prince to use the name for an alter-ego, but I dont remember the story and the name of the movie good enough to tell you about it, but it has a background story. Yes, Prince is playing a hypothetical female-role in If I Was Your Girlfriend, as he is asking his then-girlfriend Susannah Melvoin with the song how their relationship would be if he would be her girlfriend, in that sense swapping their roles. That track is about their relationship...

Yes I would buy it if they release it on vinyl, and add some cool liner notes like you said but at the same time we literally already have access to all these songs so it would kinda just be a waste of time and money to release something like that, but who knows maybe they will do something cool with it that we didn't expect. Kinda off subject but what I hope the estate does is gives us unreleased material from the 90s, I feel all we've been getting is stuff from the 80s due to him being most popular then but its getting really annoying lol. Yes we got welcome 2 america which was super good no complaints but i really really wants stuff from the 90s like 90s Prince is my jam! Like the whole deluxe on the Syracruse concert thats being released is very cool, don't get me wrong but I feel like we are just getting repeats and they're doing it because they know they will get the money for it due to that being one of his most popular concerts and time eras, its just kinda dissapointing. I hope someday for a Diamonds and Pearls deluxe or The Gold Experience one.

When i heard that they were going to release Camille, i pretty much had the same reaction as you... .....OK?😏 because, i stream his albums and ,i rather stream an album such as Camille since the tracks are already out there. At the same time it is kind of exciting only because now we get to have all the tracks together rather than have the tracks split apart. I have only heard 2 of the tracks the most popular ones "If i was your Girl friend" and 'Strange Relationship" i never paid attention to the others tbh I hear what you're saying about making a playlist, but it's still better to have a physical/official copy. Once any album is released having liner notes and photos is a given, i can't imagine them releasing an album without any of that. So yeah i'm excited too see what they do with it.

There are a few different mixes/versions of songs on the Camille album that are different to the released versions. I don't even know if they will do new packaging for this. I think it might just be released like the test pressing with just the white dust jacket with label holes or maybe the homemade cover where Prince drew the "smiley" face on a plain sleeve.Oh and it might only be a limited edition run (1,986 copies perhaps?). We shall see.

I really don't understand your opposition to this release. You might not need it. But a lot of people would like it in their collection. As for the playlist compilation suggestion, a few of the songs on the original Camille album have different versions to the released versions. Rebirth of the Flesh & Housequake segue into each other. If I was your Girlfriend omits the intro on SOTT. Good Love on 1998 Crystal Ball is a shorter remix than the Camille/Bright lights Big City version. Feel U Up is not the version on the hits/b sides album. The Camille version is the long stroke that can only be found on UK pressings of the Partyman CD single. + When you compile these tracks from different sources you get wildly different volume levels. Some of us have heard about this project since the late 80s. It would be nice to hear the Camille album in it's original cohesive form. If you think it's unnecessary then don't buy it. I suspect this will just be a limited vinyl release of 1,986 copies.

I think you are missing a very important point. Your opinion on the Camille release is the same justification that Michael Howe gave for the major and almost unforgivable omissions on the Sign O' The Times Super Deluxe set: the availability of the tracks on other albums and the assembly of playlists. That point is invalid IMHO, as the tracks as they were included on Camille are not all available on streaming services, and to collect all the CD's to have all the tracks is also rather complicated. You mentioned that Feel U Up and Shockadelica are available on The Hits/The B-Sides, which is not entirely correct as the versions included on Camille are not on The B-Sides, just the edits. You would need SOTT for most of the tracks, SOTT Deluxe for the Shockadelica extended version, Bright Lights Big City Soundtrack for the same edit of Good Love as on Camille, The Black Album for Rockhard In A Funky Place, and the Partyman Video Mix 3" CD for the version of Feel U Up that is on Camile. The Camille album version of Rebirth of the Flesh remains unreleased, the version on SOTT Super Deluxe would have to be taken for the sake of sound quality instead of using a bootleg version. Even if having all these tracks, when putting all of them together you would experience an inconsistent sound throughout. If you are one of those that can listen to the songs on Welcome 2 America that are completely destroyed by the clipping, then you wouldn't mind, but for the rest that is actually an important issue. I, as a person who enjoys sound quality and the flow of a cohesive album, cannot listen to a playlist-frankensteined Camille or Dream Factory (to give another important example), as the sound varies vastly between the songs as they are sourced from different albums. Also, the edits and versions are not the ones intended for the album. Going back to my example of Dream Factory: would you also think a release of Dream Factory (especially of the June 3 configuration, which is for me the only important configuration of the album) would be unnecessary because we could theoretically assemble it with a playlist? There are so many inconsistencies that come with it that it has nothing to do with the actual, carefully crafted and cohesive album, just as with Camille (though less extreme in that case). Think about the missing intro of Dream Factory, the unknown edit of Strange Relationship, the alternate version of Crystal Ball and Sexual Suicide, as well as Movie Star without the intro from Jam of the Year (just to name a few). With Camille it would be only the edit of Rebirth of the Flesh as far as I know, but a properly mastered and cohesive Camille that flows and breathes as one is worth the money, as it is also a historical time document. If you are a Prince fam that buys a Super Deluxe edition, you should also want a pristine and official copy of the original Camille as Prince himself finished it, IMHO of course. I'm afraid that Third Man will only release Camille as a limited edition vinyl, but I think that the estate should think about releasing those kind of early configurations or unreleased albums digitally, without the need to pay money for the manufacturing and distribution, as full-format stand alone releases of these albums would not be commercially successful. All these unreleased albums and early configurations are part of his legacy and are stunning time-capsules. I would love Third Man Records to also release the original 1986 Crystal Ball, the June 3 configuration of Dream Factory, the early configuration of Parade, and the first configuration of Diamonds and Pearls. 1988's Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic would also be amazing and is desperately needed, but it has a lot of unreleased tracks that would make it qualify more for a full scale release like Welcome 2 America or inclusion on a Graffiti Bridge Super Deluxe. As you mentioned Prince and the Revolution: Live... the DVD on Purple Rain Expanded Deluxe was a disappointment, they should have fully edited and overworked it the way they did it now in the first place, so what they are doing now is just basically fixing a previously committed error, and I'm glad they did it because that concert deserves it. It could also be a sign for a possible, and also desperately needed, Purple Rain Super Deluxe (though not for too soon of course). In any way, I understand where you are coming from, as your opinion is very common. But I hope I could help and explain you a bit the other side of those that are actually looking forward to it, as I do. I have a self-made replica of Camille that you could say is 85-90% accurate (according to princevault.com and some bootleg-copies) and all the tracks needed to assemble it, and I even remastered the whole album myself (as good as possible obviously) to match the sound between the songs. But I will gladly pay to have a legit and official copy of the real thing, even if it is only on vinyl.
