Jackal vs Brown Hyena

"Bold as brass..." This black-back jackal was not very happy about a young brown hyena coming for a drink so he decided that action had to be taken!
Cubitjie Quap in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is well know for its Jackal activity. We were at the waterhole watching the Jackal attempting to catch doves and sandgrouse drinking. The jackal are really territorial and there were clearly a couple of jackal that had the hunting rights to the waterhole and were not keen to allow any of their brethren access. We however never expected that the jackal would have the guts to stand up to a brown hyena! As soon as the brown hyena arrived at the waterhole, the jackal started howling and getting really upset. The hyena then had a really uncomfortable time quenching its thirst as the a black-back jackal decided that action had to be taken and started nipping the hyena's heels.
