My boyfriend and I were walking in the woods in northern Minnesota when a snowy owl flew past us. I felt so blessed. Later, I heard that if they arrived so far south, it was because they were already starving. So sad. It has a truly huge wing span, about 6 feet. I was amazed that it could fly through the trees with such wide wings. It was perfectly silent. P.S. We had Northern Lights too.

So breathtakingly amazing, awesome, endearing, & engrossing that I can't help doffing my hat to all concerned in this unrivaled, unparalleled, & almost incomparable transcendent arctic animal doc.of an outstanding proportions. Especially, those photographers certainly deserve some special attention, cause they had to spend for nights & days w/ an infinite patience in order to procure those brilliant, unmissable, & almost indelible momentous footages in remarkable close-ups one after another in the face of some adverse, austere conditions for over a period of one year. It simply exhibits to discern their single-minded determination & unwavering dedication for their professional commitment to their crafts at the level most of us could only dream of. By virtue of them all concerned in this one & only unlike any other arctic animal doc., we could enjoy, admire, & appreciate it to the core at the comfort of our cozy home. My heartfelt gratitude ,,,,(07/02/23)

The Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) is a species of true owl native to the North Pole, it is known for having white plumage, which helps it blend in with the snow, it is known to prey on lemmings, hares, and ground squirrels, it is one of the few true owl species that is known for diurnal activity.
@Wilpun Жыл бұрын
they've changed the latin name of the bird to bubo scandiaca. this is because newer studies show it is more closely related to the eagle owl :D
@indyreno2933 Жыл бұрын
@williampuntervold5831, actually, the Bubo genus is polyphyletic, there are now officially just six extant species in the Bubo genus: the European Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo), the West Asian Eagle Owl (Bubo turcomanus), the Central Asian Eagle Owl (Bubo hemachalanus), the Chinese Eagle Owl (Bubo kiautschensis), the Siberian Eagle Owl (Bubo sibiricus), and the Blakiston's Eagle Owl (Bubo blakistoni), the snowy owl is moved back to the monotypic genus Nyctea, where its scientific name is actually now Nyctea scandiaca, in addition to many other species now belonging to three separate genera, Indobubo for six extant species: the Arabian Eagle Owl (Indobubo milesi), the Dusky Eagle Owl (Indobubo coromandus), the Forest Eagle Owl (Indobubo nipalensis), the Indian Eagle Owl (Indobubo bengalensis), the Barred Eagle Owl (Indobubo sumatranus), and the Philippine Eagle Owl (Indobubo philippensis), Afrobubo for nine extant species: the Pharaoh Eagle Owl (Afrobubo ascalaphus), the Spotted Eagle Owl (Afrobubo africanus), the Greyish Eagle Owl (Afrobubo cinerascens), the Giant Eagle Owl (Afrobubo lacteus), the Shelley's Eagle Owl (Afrobubo shelleyi), the Akun Eagle Owl (Afrobubo leucostictus), the Usambara Eagle Owl (Afrobubo vosseleri), the Fraser's Eagle Owl (Afrobubo poensis), and the Cape Eagle Owl (Afrobubo capensis), and Neobubo for two extant species: the Great Horned Owl (Neobubo virginianus) and the Lesser Horned Owl (Neobubo magellanicus), while the genera Nyctea (Snowy Owl Lineage) and Neobubo (New World Horned Owls) are officially sister taxa, the genus Afrobubo (African Horned Owls) is more closely related to the fishing owls (genus Scotopelia) and the genus Indobubo (South Asian Horned Owls) is more closely related to the fish owls (genus Ketupa), leaving the genus Bubo (Palearctic Horned Owls) as the most distantly related from all the other groups, in fact, all these genera: Bubo, Nyctea, Neobubo, Afrobubo, Scotopelia, Indobubo, and Ketupa are eagle owls, whilst only four genera being Bubo, Neobubo, Afrobubo, and Indobubo are called horned owls, horned owls are an informal group because the genera Neobubo (New World Horned Owls), Afrobubo (African Horned Owls), and Indobubo (South Asian Horned Owls) are all more closely related to the genera Nyctea (Snowy Owl Lineage), Scotopelia (Fishing Owls), and Ketupa (Fish Owls) respectively than they are to the genus Bubo (Palearctic Horned Owls).

This documentary is beautiful. In the region where I lived when I was a child there was (perhaps still exists) a kind of large owl with white feathers on the head and light gray on the chest. The Brazilian Suindara (Tytonidae) is very different from this white owl.
Had it not been for this superb doc., I would not have had any knowledge of the life & plight of a snowy owl in the Arctic, let alone its existence in such an extreme foreboding terrain. Thanks to this documentary, I've gained new & better insights into the behavior of the rare & unique animal like no others. Moreover, I just want to say that it is not only educational, edifying, but also so informative. I can't be more grateful & gratified w/ it ,,,(07/09/23)

These types of documentaries typically take a lot of footage of different individuals, and edit together a story. Sometimes you get a doc that follows just one animal, but it's exceedingly difficult.

Superb photographic skills give us a wealth of beautiful Arctic scenery, flora and fauna in latitudes that are less than forgiving. The owl's flight started abruptly. Did ma owl and the threesome make it or did they starve? Thank you for a great documentary and to those hardy photographers! -40 hurts! As a Canadian I've lived days like that. Keep your wits even in the southern regions.
