@@christopherfritz3840 Something to consider is that we have been in this position once before. In the 1970s at the start of the all volunteer force, there was a great concern that enough people would join. Then it got even worse when Jimmy Carter got embarrassed by the hostage crisis. Father's at that time told their children to stay away because there was a great concern about how they would be used. That all changed when Reagan took over. Enlistment sky rocketed in the space of three years when confidence rose. Those of us who joined in those years called ourselves "The Reagan Kids."

Hua. My son will break a generations long tradition of military service by the males in this family. We’ve had a father/son/brother in every major conflict. We still have my great great grandfather’s confederate uniform from his time in the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment, who fought the battle of Little Roundtop at Gettysburg. My grandfather, himself, was a POW in North Korea for 3 years in the 50’s. I spilled my own blood & tears in the dust and sand of Iraq in 2004, and again in 2006. They WILL NOT have the honor of sending MY SON off to battle for their Forever Wars. No sir. This stops here. This ends with me. 🇺🇸 🫡

@jasonnordin
@jasonnordin 3 ай бұрын
Absolutely 100% correct. The VA does NOT actually help Vets, but instead exacerbates their problems opting to get them addicted to various psychotropics muddying their thinking, getting them addicted to these “medications”, that often leads to “self medicating” with alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs, until the Veteran is so overwhelmed by their demons they kill themselves to end the pain. And this is exactly what the VA *wants* because then they no longer have to pay out benefits, Vets don’t qualify for SGLI, and the VA life insurance (VGLI) is so convoluted & complicated and not even presented timely, that most Vets don’t have that either, so it’s a “win-win” for the government because for the government Service Members are expendable and Veterans are “wasted money”.

The 90’s were indeed terrible in many ways and we are still seeing the effects. The VA does seem to have improved and is still in terrible shape (I really think they got some motivated new people who care, but there’s still structural issues). Still, I think the biggest thing is culture while in the military. Schilchter is nailing it here in my opinion. The only thing I would say to him is that the current situation was only possible because of too much institutional inertia. My latest idea is that the military needs to actually figure out how have leaders get punished for maintaining status quo when status quo is unacceptable. Young officers and NCO’s who accept the unacceptable just because somethings been that way for a long time need to be the ones getting pushed out. Instead, they keep ejecting the kid who points out the emperor is naked. (I suspect the real ending of the story of the Emperor’s new clothes should have been the kid and his family get publicly or secretly punished or even killed). Of course, you can’t have a culture of whiners either, but theres a difference that needs to be made between identifying things that need change and merely complaining. It’s not good to avoid fixing something because it might embarrass someone it was broken to begin with, and I saw a whole lot of that going on.

@@nunyabidness3075 Yes, the VA of today has gotten much better. I can definately say that if the VA I met when I got out in 1993 was the same as the VA of today, I have no doubt that I would be a millionaire. With Chapter 35 and all the Voc Rehab of today and ease of getting claims done and just the overall support of the VA of today, I cry sometimes to think of what I could have been had the VA helped me the same way in 93 that they do today. Now I am an old man, brain is going, health is going.

Then 9-11occirred and patriotism rose again because we had a real cause. Then our own government and military brass betrayed us again and just walked away in the most disgraceful manner possible. All the lives that were lost during Vietnam and the gulf war were for nothing, and the government and pentagon don't even care. Rule # one: If you get into a war, get in it to win and do what is necessary to achieve that end. Rule # two: There is no substitute for victory. Rule # three: Don't lie to the American people or the military rank and file. Those in leadership positions have forgotten all three of these, IF they ever knew them in the first place.

It doesn't kill me. I'm a veteran, and I love the Army to this day. I am proud of the young people who have zero interest in joining up. They don't want to get used and used up like the last generation of military. They saw that it didn't matter which party held the White House. The federal government will have a very difficult time forcing the draft on Americans because of this and because the parents and grandparents of daft age kids already resist, and there isn't even an active draft. Thoughtful senior leadership has known this for years. The ones who consider young Americans to be toys for them to use up tend to sense that the toys won't play that. Who enlisted in the past does not have to be described in racial terms. Here's a better way. In the days of the Black Boot Volunteer Army, people joined: -To get out of poverty or danger -Because they could see no other way to get employed -To pay for education -To get out of Nebraska, etc -Because they came from patriotic families where at least one son joined almost every generation, thank you South and Midwest All true regardless of race.

From my birth and until I enlisted at 19 in 1972 and retiring 26 years later, my support for my leaders were never in doubt, though we saw some of them not survive their command for various reasons and it was not in that time "screw up, you move up", it was career ending. I served for with so many unbelievable people and placing that trust in those military leaders allowed our political leaders to inherent that trust as well. After retiring in 1998 and being so incensed by the 9-11 disaster, my hype for our military went into high gear and though we had known those who were seriously injured and killed in conflicts throughout my service, it appeared to be a sacrifice many accepted. It is hard to see the impact of those who lost their lives during that time after 2003 and the effects it had on those left behind, as well seeing those who were crippled though they returned to the conflict after being seriously injured and then upon their return losing limbs and some their lives. As the time continued as well as Iraq and Afghanistan, small inklings would be dropped, such as the vast resources that were discovered or known about before in Afghanistan and you though surely we were not there to help businesses to access that resource. Then 2016 happened and more of the veil became a lot more clear and in 2022 what we saw of the withdrawal in Afghanistan and the incompetence, it was to much and it turned my stomach. It has become apparent and slowly revealed even though I had no clue at the age of 11 why President Kennedy was murdered by our own intelligence agencies, these last four years has given me pause for reflection that so many conflicts were not because we were trying to preserve "democracy", it was to fill the coffers of the military industrial complex. The funny thing is that we were warned by Eisenhower, though at the time I had no clue about it, but if we look back on all the things from the Kennedy murder to now, it was all a ruse, a psyop against the American people so that they could sacrifice their young sons and daughters at the altar of war and money. I will say to any young person, "STAY AWAY FROM THE US MILITARY!" You are only cannon fodder and will be supporting those whose only goal is to enhance their bank accounts off the blood of young Americans.

Current Sailor here. The military exacerbates the drawbacks of teamwork. If a member is on the upper end of the pareto distribution, all the work and responsibility gets shunted to that member to the point that they can't take care of themselves. This mechanism then validates the manipulators and passive aggressive grifters. So now the bystanders face a choice, work your ass off and look like a fool? Or be a Doofy and shine? Honestly, it's like being back high school again, where only one team member cares about the project. It's crushing.

Proudly served and have the pain to remind me every day. I do not blame young people for not serving, since Korea our leaders and the public have demonstrated repeatedly to not have the stomach or even the interest in supporting our military. Worse yet, our leaders have consistently got us into conflicts we had no business being in and it doesn't appear they will ever learn. I'm for compulsory service with no exemptions, unless the individual is shown to have physical and/or mental disabilities so bad as to preclude them from any type of service. Maybe if we get back to everyone's kids having to serve, we'll develop a fully staffed, competent and ready military, that will only be used in the direst of circumstances, which is precisely how it should be.

I won’t even get into how dog shit the VA was because I could write a book on that. It took over 30 years, numerous appeals, and 1 decent doctor for him to get 100% disability status. I'm a 3rd generation veteran and have actively discouraged both of my kids from joining the military. The points Kurt brought up are all valid. For me, even without the DEI and other social issues, the almost complete incompetence of senior military and civilian leaders is the main reason. The top military leaders almost to a person seem politically astute (very skilled at getting money and promotions) but militarily incompetent, hence 25 years of losing wars. They go along to get along but are generally not war fighters in any traditional sense. The top civilian leaders, the actual decision-makers, are worse than incompetent. They are basically psychotic chickenhawks more than happy to send your kids, my kids, Ukrainian kids, off to fight and die for something they can't even define the purpose for or what constitutes victory. The idea of someone like Jake Sullivan or Victoria Nuland having a major role in deploying your kids to a war zone should give any parents pause on recommending the military for their kids. These people are a lethal combination of dumb, over-confident, historically ignorant and callously cruel with the lives of anyone they consider beneath them. And that's the crux of it - we have elites (almost all non-veteran) that do not give a shit about any soldier, sailor, airmen or Marine or any of their families. Their logic is that "well, they volunteered, right!" so the elites will do whatever they want with them, no matter how senseless or cruel. The only way to (maybe) change things is to vote with your feet and not join.

But what a lot of those movies contain are warnings about serving the government and the fate of vets after pointless wars. I feel like that aspect of the story got missed, and history since Sept 11 has imitated art. I listened to too many U2 and Bruce Springsteen songs to go through with it (one of the best anti-war anthems I recall from the late 80s is a song called “Civil War” by Guns N’ Roses. I’ve thought about it many times seeing reports about the war in Gaza and watching the politics play out). And I gotta say, I’m glad. A lot of vets are dealing with injuries and PTSD from their service, or have had to witness it in their comrades. Vets have had to deal with unimaginable pain and suffering, and what do we have to show for it? On the 20th anniversary of September 11, the Taliban paraded through Kabul in American humvees and Blackhawk helicopters. We spent unimaginable money to reduce Iraq to wreck and ruin and now it is completely under Iran’s influence. I could never counsel a young person to enter the military today. No way.

The Generals nowadays are cowards. Why would you want to serve under unimpressive people like that?

Don't have any family who served in the military but have family who lived through an illegal US invasion.

I am the last to serve in the military (my son and daughter are a police officer and a nurse so they “serve”). We have had someone in the military since the Revolutionary War. It’s sad that this has ended due to political leadership.

This is so spot on. Why would a Government (any Government!) alienate their main recruiting base?

My retired wife (20yrs Air Force) and myself (retired combat vet, 6yrs Army/17yrs Air Force), both advised our five children to not join the military. Why should they endanger their lives to satisfy the war craving of the politicians that would never endanger their own kids' lives.
