Being a creator isn't easy, it's all about how you ride out the failures. What other challenges do you face as a creator? Reply in the comments below and I will try and make more videos looking at these issues.

Focus is something I struggle with. I work full time at a cafe just to make ends meet. I feel exhausted when I'm home. Before coronavirus, I had begun going to the library every day for an hour just to write. I did this for a little over a month and it felt good. Now for the last month, I've just been focusing on learning Japanese for when I go on a working holiday next year. Maybe rather than focus it's just being overwhelmed. I need to zero in on the thing that I want to do or else it's like Netflix. There are so many options and you just keep scrolling and never choose one. For so many years I would freeze and waste my time. Now when I choose one thing to focus on I still feel overwhelmed because I'm scared that I'll never go back to the other things. I went to school for film when I was 20 and never got into it until 6 years after I graduated (still not getting paid). I also went to school for art fundamentals and then stopped drawing for a year and a half because I was in a really low place. I love to draw too. Maybe juggling is the right word. Being able to juggle my interests without losing focus and being overwhelmed.

Hey jack! I've been watching for a very long time now, I don't comment often but I wanted to let you know. Many of the projects you described as duds (the nightmares and daydreams, the yeah yeah yeah video and many other things) were truly inspiring and motivating for me as a young artist. When I listen to those songs they communicate all the time and all the love you put into them. What I'm trying to say is that they did pay off, it's not a dud if you got up and kept going, and definitely not if they inspired someone else to do the same. And I'm certain I'm not the only one who was inspired by them. I'm now at the point where I've graduated from university and my friends have paying jobs while I try to make it as an artist form my dad's house. And seeing how you have grown it makes me really proud of you. Every thing you put out keeps inspiring me the same way those first videosongs did. Keep it up, u guys rock! Lots of love from Argentina

Jack. Thank you. Thank you so much for your honesty, transparency, and vulnerability. I don't usually comment on videos, but I just couldn't say nothing after watching yours.

As a creator and entrepreneur, I can't begin to tell you how much this video means to me. I've watched so many videos, listened to so many podcasts, read so many books about founders' and artists' success stories - and they often made me feel like I wasn't doing something right, wasn't working hard enough, or wasn't cut out of the same stuff. This is the first video that has made feel not alone in my struggles. For the first time, I feel that someone actually understands what I've felt and still continue to feel during those painful dips - that fear-filled adrenaline and sinking depression that follows. It's so relieving to hear another person’s experience of watching their hard work lead to nothing and the journey enduring past it. That emotional recognition is probably one of the most encouraging things I’ve received. So thank you again. You’ve made a profound impact on my life and soul.

As someone who has been trying to make it as a musician and creator for the past few years, I gotta say, this has to be one of the most motivational videos I ever ever seen on the topic of creativity and artistry. You don't know how much it means to know that someone so successful empathizes with the struggle of creating dud after dud. I have been a fan of yours since before the Single Ladies video when my one of my professors showed us the Pomplamoose cover of My Favorite Things back in 2009. Your content has been an absolute inspiration to me for over a decade and this video will be one I will be revisiting on a regular basis to provide me some hope and inspiration. Thank you so much, Jack. I needed this message now more than ever.

12 years in to my career as a professional musician. Started a music licensing company called Marmoset. I've put millions in to pockets of artists. Like a tiny psuedo Jack Conte. I am 37, chasing my dream of being a known, stable artist that makes art for real ppl vs just for brands. I am throwing misses daily, chasing my dream, fighting, trying to bring down those highs and bring up those lows and be steady and work hard. Sometimes I deal with dread, sometimes I deal with nihilism. Today, after hearing your account, I've got wind in my sails for the 100th time and am feeling very very blessed to be alive. Thanks, Jack. I identify so so so deeply with you and what you do. You inspire me to keep grinding and chasing joy and uplifting humans well in to old age.

Jack, I don't know how I get you to read this, but let's give it a go in the form of a youtube comment and otherwise it will be one of the duds for me. You have been my idol since I was 15 years old, that is 12 years ago at the moment. Know that your "duds" have been a massive inspiration for me throughout multiple phases of my life. Especially in my lowest moments, with no more energy left to finish something, I watch your video Pedals and the behind the scenes and wonder if I've given it the 100%, which then boosts me to continue. I hope one day when I am ready to be able to work for your company Patreon. I hope you know that although you might see these video's as duds in terms of amount of views, that at least for me and I think many of the viewers here, it makes a massive impact. Stay freaking awesome!

I know of creators not anywhere close to his talent that get like 2 million views on a video in a single day with again nowhere as close to the quality of content or hard work or talent. And here we r with just 50k view on this brilliant video in 15 days of being uploaded. The amount of value in this video being churned out per second of viewing is very very dense This guy should b a proper KZbin celebrity at the least but I don't think he has gotten anywhere close to that. I feel it has got more to do with that he doesn't want it, in some subconscious way

(watched the talk twice in a row, I really needed this, thanks) Hitting my mid 20s in two days from today, getting ready to ... actually, already hitting duds at a super increasing rate! failed twice to get to college, then my only option was some study field I never thought of. I started to panic when I realized I wasn't learning anything from it even after 4 years(I wouldn't hire me to do the basic task in that domain) ... Sometimes failure is an opportunity but, where I come from, the culture, society and all that follows, failure is fatal and well as you put it in the talk ".. I feel threatened and scared. there's a billion years biology that kicks in and tries to initiate this whole hormone cascade and freak me out" is literally the thing that cross my mind at those times. Studying GSP with a major in Environment (it's basically like playing a city builder but, in real life..) which is something that doesn't work where I am, I followed my passion for video games so I got into indie game dev, learning to code but also doing digital art (2d/3d) and in the same time I try to learn on my own for my college studies ... I find myself rushing to learn more so I don't limit myself and always have something up my sleeve but, it freaks me out when I think I may just end up as a jack of all trades who's master of none. specially when i can't even land a part time job or internship with a almost non existing economy in this country ... (geez my first youtube comment is so long)

Yo I actually dug Nightmares and Daydreams. That's how I found you originally. I remember running into you in SF on Valencia and being so starstruck, this was just when Patreon was becoming a thing and I was super into all of it. I remember telling you how much I loved your solo music and you were so shocked that I even knew who you were let alone those tunes. I told you about my art (crochet) and you invited me to your dinky little office in an apartment in the Castro. While nothing directly happened after that, that moment totally changed my life and sent me on a trajectory of art that I never truly thanked you for. That is something I find with a lot of my projects actually. A lot are failures that seemingly go nowhere, but I wouldn't be where I am without them (not that meeting you was a failure, it just wasn't as obviously a directional change). Anyhow, thanks for being so chill and encouraging my art in a time when that was kinda tough to find. I appreciate you my dude.

Jack - I found you and Nataly through your music when just drifting by a few years back. I had become a fan of the music anyway but this talk I've just watched has been inspirational in as much as it has reminded me once again that Edison found more than a thousand ways the light bulb wouldn't work... You have to have the noes to find the yeses. You have to suffer the disappointments to enjoy the successes. You are of a different (younger) generation than me and even from a different continent, but I just want to let you know that some of your creativity and open honesty has touched and enriched my life. Thank you. Keep up the good work!

Wow! I'm already a huge fan of Jack, Nat, and Pomplamoose but after watching this video and learning just how much hard work, failures, and get back up again's you've endured it really puts things in perspective. And I'm blown away that you also came up with the idea for Patreon, beautiful. (I am a Nat Patreon supporter, lol!) But here's the thing, as creative people you are amazing! And now I truly understand the dedication, perseverance, and love for you craft that it takes to keep soldiering on, day after day, failure, after failure, to keep doing what you love, and what you were meant to do creatively. The mosaic of life is intricate and interspersed with these creative gems like you and Nat that defy all odds and reason but are defined by the beautiful raw talent that you are. I'm thankful to platforms like youtube that give the world opportunity to find you and others that ordinarily might not have a voice but am sad that they take such a big slice from your creative endeavors for without the creators, there is no youtube, vevo, spotify, etc. #equalityforall.

This is one of the best videos I have ever seen. Tho I don't have comparable live experience in falling and standing up again, like Jack, this video was immensely relatable to me. As a creative, the new things that I work on and am excited about, always had to make such an impact, monetarily and socially. This pressure stops me to try anything at all. It's so funny that I stop myself from doing things that I love just because nobody would care, or I wouldn't earn a penny. The anecdote he shared about someone telling him that he hopes that Jack will make it, is so heartbreaking. Believing in yourself and envisioning things that would be great for you, sucks, because constantly people around you would not see any potential. And even if you fail, there's nobody giving you a pat on the back, for just trying a new thing. But I hope the feeling a get after completing a painting after weeks of works, nailing the art direction for a photoshoot, digging KZbin for obscure transitions for a video, spending hours to trace illustrations with the pen tool never gets old, and I keep believing in the potential I see in myself.

Jack, I'm literally in tears 😭with how you related to creative pioneers by focusing on all the duds that didn't work. I'm 35 now with equally as many business, social, and relational failures in creativity. Although THIS video deserves a billion views, the recognition you got from the audience cheering your emotions to any financial returns through Patreon is well deserved Jack. I just subscribed and will be building out my first Patreon profile directly from the inspiration of the two videos I just watched on this channel. After 122 videos on my new KZbin channel last year and not a single dollar made, I'm truly hoping your vision of Patreon will smooth out the curve and bridge the gap of financial discrepancy. I also want you to know your expertly crafted keynote touched my heart deeply. 🥰

He is such a mentally mature person. I would definitely blame myself, think I'm such a dumb idiot after spending 2 weeks on an "unsuccessful" video and would never try to do creative and self-expressing things ever.

Thank you for your transparency. So much of your story resonated with me. And I'm grateful that I have benefited from your brainchild, Patreon. Listening to your story makes me think that I shouldn't give up. I haven't figured out how to make it work well enough to make a full time living from the platform but I'm encouraged to keep going. Thanks so much. Ironically, I have over 1.5 million followers online. It's good to know that someone like you has had many misses but kept going until you hit. I hope to share my breakthrough with you one day once it comes. All the best!

Jack!! Wow. Thank you. I actually needed this right at this moment. I’m a creator employed at a marketing agency..the past month I’ve felt things going downhill. I knew that it was a problem when my work was actually causing me more stress that planning my upcoming wedding haha. I am feeling exactly what you described, that terror that things are about to blow up. Thanks for reminding me to zoom out. It’s so silly because everything else in my life is great..and my career is otherwise on the up curve. If things go south, it’s just the stepping stone to the next thing. And a learning experience. I look up to you and Nataly so much and it helps a lot to remember that even you had plenty of failures too. Love you guys❤️

I really needed to hear this. Really don't know what else to say. I have been watching your videos for around 8 years and its been a real memory trip to see where you were in your personal life behind all these moments and videos I have seen. I really admire how you have been able to make it work (through the smooth curve) and how to enable yourself to do the things you love. Just like many here im sure, I am also an artist. I have this urge to create and when im not creating, learning, failing and growing i am the most unhappy. I am at a crossroads right now where I have to be practical about if I can sustain this art as a career and I really appreciate this video. Thank you for all you have given us and for sharing your thoughts, memories and failures with us.
