Regarding smithing addy bars vs Giant's foundry, you can effectively stretch the amount of exp each bar gives by first smithing it into platebodies then using those in the foundry. I don't know how efficient it is on a main, but it means you can mine far fewer ores on an iron to reach 99 smithing and without having to alch afterwards
