How I went from 30 handicap to 11 handicap in just 6 months with no lessons!
Some fundamental tips going from a 30 handicap new golfer shotting in the 100's to breaking 90 consistently and then breaking 80 as easily as possible. I talk about how to chip, how to putt, how to get up and down, hit more GIR's and know your carry distances for every club in the bag
0:33 Use GPS (free phone app)
2:33 Know your carry distances (not total distance)
3:53 Hit more GIR's (positive approach play)
4:48 Get up & down more often (learn a standard chip shot)
6:30 Stop 3 putting! (use these putting drills)

I’m a mid handicapper in my second year of golf and the biggest things that helped was playing smarter. Sometimes you have to set your ego aside and put away the driver and just go iron or even hybrid and put the ball in play. I work extra hard on my chipping and putting, that’s where you really shave strokes off your game.

I'm shooting in the mid to high 90's right now. Got my drives straightened out and my irons are pretty good, but still miss GIR more often than not. Came to the comments looking for this. I don't want to knock Jack, he must just be athletically gifted. But to come out and say you were a 30 handicap a couple years ago and to lead off the video by saying that you carry your 8 iron 170 yards (10 yards more than the PGA Tour average) isn't going to be typical for the average golfer

Great tips! This video resonates with me as i am on a similar journey currently. However i had 20 years with a messed up swing (30-40 handicapper), 1000's of dollars with multiple coaches and now i've found a youtube coach that resonates with me and my swing has improved ten fold in 4 months (Shot an 82 last game on a par 70 golf course). I found once i knew what my distances were consistently with each club with my standard tempo swing, the use of a range finder and using the same ball has become even more important then ever.

Couldn't agree more. Before I had a GPS device I had no idea how far from the hole I was. In addition, I had no idea how far I hit it anyway! Now I have GPS and know my distances I can just casually swing away knowing I won't overshoot it. I also always play conservatively and go with the distance to the middle of the green which normally gives me +/- 10 yards to play with.

@@JackFowlerGolf For sure! It seems to be the one thing I didn't lose too much from my long hiatus, so I'm definitely holding on to it for dear life. I 100% wouldn't already be back under 100 if it wasn't for my low putting average. Short game is really saving my butt! As you said in the video, it's most of your shots, so as long as you manage to get close to the green, if you manage to get up and down and putt properly, things can only get so bad to begin with! 7 iron and down is pretty much under control, but my long game is messed up. I lost about a club in distance across the board (a bit more with my driver, used to average 250 carry, now it's 225-230), and I'm getting extremely inconsistent hits with my woods and long irons.

I cut 15 strokes from my handicap by practicing any shot that might come my way from 50 yds and in. Especially a ton of time putting. So many people invest an insane amount hitting driver and long & mid irons. Golf metrics assume 2 putts per hole to finish on par. That's 36 strokes per round out of 72. You'll maybe use your driver on 14-15 holes at most. Work 75% on short game, folks.

Couldn’t agree more! That’s what I’m currently working on now as it’s my weakness and dropping the most shots on. It’s just very boring… I find good quality 30 mins of putting and chipping works rather than 1-2 hours of drawn out work

Most people spend most of there time with Driver and Irons because they can't even get to the short game area LOL. My biggest issue use to be me just getting off the tee and fating my irons LOL. Now that I've gotten past that, shooting 85 and has become so easy. ;-)

Since watching several YT golfers I’ve often wanted to do something like this. Golf for the common man. Nice job…the single biggest thing you can do to improve your golf game is 2 words. RANGE RAT. You didn’t just improve going on the course. You hit hundreds of buckets of balls and chipped and putted your brains out. You see your improvement…now just imagine how much practice a pro did/does to get to where they are.

Knowing your carry distances is huge. I've been struggling to know mine. I've been taking lessons since Nov 2022. Lessons have been going well, however, I used the launch monitor at my GolfTec facility to get my avg carry after the first month. Over the next few months, we made swing changes, and my avg distances have fluctuated as I implement the changes. So, sometimes my avg carry with my 7i is 140 and other times is is 125 (I'm 60 years old and have lost a lot of muscle mass over the years as I have not worked out for decades). You can see where that can be a challenge...but it is only temporary. As my swing gets more consistent, so will my carry distances. I have no idea what people without access to a proper launch monitor do to know these distances.

John - what I did years ago was to go to one of the muni courses near me. Bought a measuring wheel from Home Depot and picked a course that had a par 5 that was sort of out of the way, yet had close access to get on. It was the 5-6th hole and I would head over there 6-7p and drag my clubs, bag of balls and measuring wheel. Picked a spot that was level and would hit 10 balls out then measure them all, write it down and hit 10 balls back towards golf bag. Measured and wrote those down. Did that for each iron and hybrid with full grip then also 1 and 2 inch choke down on clubs. Took all the measurements and plugged them into XLS and got my averages. Not the number was based on rollout not exact carry. But a few things happened from this. 1st - I now had 3 yardages for just about all my clubs in the bag. 2nd - the improvement in my game took me from 8-9 hcp to 3-4. Going from hitting GIR and having 30 foot putts (I SUCK at putting) to getting inside 20 feet like ALL the time was the 2nd biggest difference maker in my game. The biggest difference maker? You gotta hit balls all the time. Like 4-5 days/week. Even if you suck and have crazy swing, you will improve as you increase your confidence thru consistency in how you hit the ball. #3 is NOT showing up at the course 6 minutes before your tee time. You play twice a month, show up at the course and check in and go to 1st tee and in the 5 minutes you wait for the group in front of you to clear out you putt for 3 minutes. Then on the 7th hole your about to snap all your clubs cuz your 16 over par already then magically you start getting some pars and bogies. End your day shooting 94 and you wonder why you suck.

First 6 months all the rounds of golf you see at the start of the video… as for practise I only went driving range about 1/2 the time night before my round of golf depending on if I had time. Only 2022 I started practising putting/chipping

@@JackFowlerGolf That's good results with that level of practice.

The grove was a birthday round when it cost £100 for twilight! It’s gone up considerably the last year tho…. Also, I’m a member now at west Herts 👍🏼

Liked and sub'd. Good stuff and good length of time for video. Fwiw, I know a lot of us would be interested in hearing more about what you did to drop that many strokes off your handicap in just a few months. How often did you play? How often did you practice and for how long? Did you focus on the drills you have in this video or are there others? Should be a decent bit of material here for more videos to get your stats up.

This video does overlook the key point. You already have a consistent swing. swing variations and margins of error are the biggest issue for us.

im a 30 handicap but majority of those comes from bad tee shots and bad iron shots. Im only good about 100 yards and in, including my putting. Also, 150 out with my 7 iron.

Hitting greens is sooooooo important! Find your swing so you can hit the irons where you mean to hit them all the time! 100 to 150 hard shots off the ground are so important. Then practice the 6 and 5 iron off a tee that is teed up low. Get on to those greens in regulation!!!

"Here's how I lowered my scores" Hits 7 iron 185 yards. That's how. Longer hitters=lower scores. The closer you get to the green from the tee the lower club you need on approach and the more accurate you are to the pin.

I lose about 10+ strokes a game on penalties, based on my Grint stats. Balls in hazards or lost comprise of a ton of strokes and bunkers might throw on two or three.

I have a question - why wouldn't you tee up that 3-wood to give yourself the most perfect lie you can have? I use the Kirkland Signature v2 ball too! I got them on sale recently and the per ball cost was .98 cents!!! They spin a bit more than Pro V's off the tees (left or right spin) and I don't think they have as much backspin around the greens. But, for the price, you can't beat that. I'm curious to see what the v3 will be like.

I do tee my 3 wood up, but it’s only a small tee. Kind of like when you tee up an iron shot. I like to keep the same swing with my 3 wood off the fairway to the tee box rather than swinging up off the tee and down on the fairway. Less mistakes that way

I’ve been off the game for 20 years and stepped back into it about 4seasons ago. Where I live it’s cold and snow so the courses close around Nov-April. I built a DIY simulator in my garage for the winter months and hit almost every day. But my question for you is did you take lessons? I have yet to. If so, did that really impact your score, course management and how you approach each hole?

Took lessons, changed my grip, the way I stood etc. For 6 weeks I was shooting higher (90+) scores then another 6 weeks later shooting my best rounds (breaking 80)

I was going to try not to take lessons but what’s the point. If it will drastically improve my game, it makes perfect sense. Thank you, Jack for your help and videos.

How to get your handicap down: Play field golf where there are no hazards. If you play a course with hills, water, and rocks it results in rediculous strokes. You are better than you think you are.
