We are in Zone 9B, just 30 miles north of Tampa, FL & are now fruiting Jackfruit at only a year and a 1/2 in our High Tunnel Greenhouse. We are obsessed with a good jackfruit & over the last few years we've been propogating out all of our seeds from the best fruit we eat. (We don't save the seeds if the specimen is less than desirable: Our favorites are the super fragrant, semi-firm to firm with low latex.)

I sought out a video of jackfruit trees and I'm so glad I found this one! My little tree I grew from a seed has little fruits on it! Shes barely two years old and only five feet tall.We had been getting rain for the past two days,so I was not able to look at her,so imagine my surprise when I looked at her yesterday and saw fruits roughly the size of the tip of my thumb! This is so cool👍

Congratulations Pete! Hopefully the male and female flowers will set well and not fall off, that is so COOL! Ya know the first State to welcome Jackfruit(Yaca here) in Mexico was tropical, coastal Nayarit, then next door in Sinaloa Jackfruit was established, but since the clime up here on the central plateau gets a bit chilly during winter and the distance(curvy, narrow roads from the coast to over here), we've finally been able to taste the "juicy fruit" Jackfruit. Hopefully since our clime is categorized as 'subtropical' once the baby seedling grows bigger, it can thrive as do mango, banana, avocado and papaya plants with no harm from the winter chill. :)

I found a super ripe & delicious 1/4 jackfruit at my local grocer, and to my surprise 2 of the seeds germinated and are about 1 ft tall after a couple months. I am using miracle grow potting soil but I have been having issues with root rot with this soil. Is there a soil mix you can recommend for potted jackfruits? I really love these little trees and want them to survive because the mother fruit was so outstanding, better than any other jackfruit I ever had

@@aliendude4064 the original post was about planting seeds, we don't know if they sprouted, how much they grew, or if they survived or how many so being curious isn't unreasonable in such a short period, hence why the fruiting time is irrelevant. You may have less than ideal conditions or, since jackfruit is open pollinated, each tree can take slightly different times to grow depending on the specific genetics of the seedling. Jackfruit can fruit at 2-3 years under ideal conditions which is what we did with ours (controlled environment grow room, also working on mangos and two varieties of pineapples), unfortunately nature is typically far from ideal which is probably why it took longer for yours in your yard. I honestly wish you best of luck growing yours and hope it produces lots of delicious fruit for you.

I come from Australia as well (near Newcastle) & I have 3 of them growing as seedlings near the beginning of winter,I had 4 growing but 1 died either of getting wet roots or the roots outgrew the container I had it in ,therefore couldn't reach down & out any deeper to get water. I transplanted them into 250 mm pots after finding they outgrew the yoghurt pots that I've had them planted in,in the near future, I'll have somewhere to plant them in the ground hopefully, I have also ordered another seed to replace the plant which has died. Depending upon who you talk to,I live in a 11a climate zone as it almost never gets below 4 degrees celsius in the winter time now,go further inland & it's more like 10a or 10b, in Sydney for example, someone said it was too cold in winter time to grow jackfruit trees,apparently,they say if the temperature falls below 0 degrees celsius,mulching the tree can insulate the roots on a mature tree from getting frostbite. It's been a lot of years since the winter temperature has been around the 0 degree celsius mark,we've been having warmer winters & scorching hot summers in our area so the tropical plants have been starting to grow better for me,the climate zone is Cfa (humid subtropical) as it is near the Queensland border near where my father came from & his dad grew bananas,however, the annual rainfall there is greater where I am so down our way we need to water the plants more. I think our climate has changed from what it was 20 years ago because about 2 weeks before winter, the deciduous trees are just starting to shed their leaves so I think more tropical sorts of plants can be grown now,so we are still coming into Autumn. In April for example, the days were still like 32 degrees celsius which is very unusual to what the climate & weather was like 2 decades ago,that means that we have had a longer summer than what was once usual.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but there is a variety of Jack Fruit that witll produce fruit in 18 months from the time seeds are planted. I am from a tropical contry originally and we have had the 18 month veriety growing on our property at least for the last 60 years that I can rememmber. In the 1970.s I was living in Micronesia and took several seeds from my mother country and planted them and they too start producing within 18 months. AS you may know there are two main verities of Jack fruit. One ceriety the pod is crunchy when they ripen and the other one is very soft when the pods are ripe. To my kowledge only the crunchy veriaty ptoduces fruit in 18 months.

I haven't done anything special. The trick I've found with jackfruits is to start them from seed in the ground, they get root bound quickly and don't like there roots disturbed. We typically only use rock dusts and chicken poop, this one was given a little 4-6-4 organic fertilizer.

Do y'all have a "different type of 9B" 30 miles north of Tampa than we have here in Altamonte Springs? What I mean to say is, it seems that your area gets colder, some how. I know that Tampa Bay got COLD (not freezing but, damn!) during the 10 years I lived there 1985-1995. In Altamonte, Winter 2020, we had three one-hour each, below 34, on the border of freezing. Messed my Travelers' Palms the worst. The Sapodilla didn't like it but, are fine by April.

I bought a jackfruit from Publix and got the seeds to sprout. I heard farmers deactivate the seeds for some produce does that mean mine wont ever bear fruit?
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL

If they sprouted they can definitely fruit someday. Normally 3-4 years from seed.

Those flower buds are not the fruit which grow on the trunk and large branches (it's certainly a good sign though, and exciting). It's been 9 months since you posted this. Any luck on actual fruit developing?

That's beautiful, and really fast to fruit from seed! I love jackfruit. In Brazil we have two types: 'hard' and 'soft' -I imagine additional varietals that I'm still unaware of exist in Asia. Out of curiosity, have you grown durian in Florida, and got fruit? (I realise that they're not as closely related to jackfruit as might appear, but they do both require warmth and humidity.)

Unfortunately no one had been successful with Durian in Florida. I’m told it’s a soil condition.

Is it possible to grow a jackfruit in a pot? Im in zone 6a and have to bring my Citrus trees inside this winter already but is this even an option for a fruiting sized jackfruit to bring indoors? Are they a deciduous tree?
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL 6 жыл бұрын
Albert Einsteinian I didn't think it was possible until recently, because they have such a tap root. We recently filmed at Excalibar nursery and they had many fruiting in pots. Yes they are evergreen, it could be a Christmas tree 🎄

It was just some seed from a quality jackfruit from the market. I prefer them crunchy and low latex. The tree was covered in flowers until last week when we had a serious frost. I think that’ll set it back a little bit but we should have fruit again this summer.
