My father-in -law was born on the Lowe East Side in the early 1900”s. His name was Isidore Ryan- clearly the family name was changed at Ellis Island. They were originally from Poland. He was a amateur boxer who won the New York Golden Gloves Flyweight division in the 1920”s. He then turned pro and indeed trained at Stillman”s Gym. He fought under the name of “ Patty Ryan the Irish Jew “ . He was the kindest and most soft spoken man I ever knew.

There were plenty of Jewish Boxers prior to the WW2. Actually after the First World War many Jewish immigrants that settled on the Lower East Side turned to boxing. One of the most famous being Benny Leonard. Leornard and many other Jews trained at Grupp's Gym on 116th street and 8th ave. Then known as New York's boxing headquarters but the owner was a drunken Dutchman that hated jews and lost Leonard and the rest of his fighters to Stillmans gym.

Yup. Barney Ross too and many others. Skit is very funny, but in reality a # of wrestlers and other contact sport athletes are Jewish, and even though wrestling is scripted, they're very tough guys.

The Mendoza chop (striking the opponents left forarm with your left) was developed by a Spanish Jew in London. He tought the stylish young bucks how to fight, and quite a few of the tribe.
