My grandfather told me a story of seeing her perform while he took my grandmother on one of his business trips up north. After the performance my meemaw had a chance to see her briefly in passing. “You sure can sing, ma’am!” my grandmother shouted. She said she never saw someone smile so big after that in her life.

Jackie Shane was being played in the basements of my black friends in 1960’s. We danced to great R&B artists most white kids never heard about. I was lucky my parents never said no to a party invite from the “wrong side” of town. To my mom & dad we were kids dancing, drinking cokes and having a good time, and just maybe our friendships would change the world. We are all still friends some 50 years later, still dancing just not in basements, assisted living homes today.

Just got the news Jackie passed away today, February 22, 2019. Jackie was a regular entertainer at our local watering hole, the Richmond Inn, in the 1960s & early 70s. Jackie Shane, and The Mighty Pope, were two of the most popular acts to perform there. I'll always remember how kind & friendly Jackie was, despite having been treated terribly by some people who couldn't accept her for who she was. I'll always remember Jackie for the great music she leaves behind and for the terrific performer she was. R.I.P. Jackie Shane. You broke barriers, and did it with style & grace.

Fellow Torontonian here. That is wild that Jackie Shane performed at Neil McNeil. Considering it was an all boys Catholic school, that was progressive, but Toronto has always had a great music scene. I went to a Catholic High School in the 70's (Senator O'Connor), and we had amazing talent at our high school dances as well that drew students from everywhere. This is fantastic!!!! I saw Jackie Shane perform live at the Palais Royale ( a dance Hall located on the shore of Lake Ontario on the east side of Sunnyside Swimming Pavilion). This was sometime in the late sixties and is still one the best performances I have ever attended. At that time, Jackie wore a blonde Marilyn Monroe type of wig and was the most beautiful looking person. Jackie if you are still around, please come out of hiding for your adoring fans. You are absolutely the best.

To the commenters on these wonderful Jackie Shane tracks - Jackie knew she was a woman since she was a small child. You have no idea just how difficult being a black transgender woman is anywhere on this planet at any time, let alone growing up in the Jim Crow South. Black trans women have among the highest murder, abuse, unemployment and imprisonment rates of any population, and it was much, much harder in the 1960s; we’re lucky she made it through everything and lived to an old age. Have some respect, stop calling her “he.”
@liampaniak94614 жыл бұрын
I agree that you should definitely not call her a "he," in respect of her identity, but you should understand that it has only really been known for a few years now that she identified herself as a woman. Before that, I believe it was an open question to most, and some thought that she was a drag performer who lived as a man. I'm not trying to excuse those who are being ignorant, but I just wanted to make it clear.
@mattikarosenthal32983 жыл бұрын
@@liampaniak9461 much respect for her. I had no idea until I saw the other album cover where she was dressed in a tuxedo. And I can see were people thought she was a drag queen, and amazingly I have never heard of her and I have done lots of research on gay history. She reminds me so much Etta James in her choice of material. A little Nancy Wilson as well. And her back up band is jumping. And it is amazing that she performed as a woman. She would make a great subject for a documentary.

My first introduction to Jackie's music was "Any Other Way" from the BMG "Made in Canada" compilation released 1989. It's astonishing to me that this marvelously gifted performer wasn't better known, particularly in the United States, her native country. I don't believe Jackie ever became a naturalized citizen, but I for one would be proud to call her Canadian! She now lives in that celestial Hall of Fame - the one that really matters!

It didn't matter to us what sexual preference a performer/entertainer chose. I do know one thing, Jackie Shane was a male, a drag queen. We didn't care. But it seems that the present generation is so pre-occupied with who is what. Here is a 2011 article I found online: Little Jackie Shane Live from the Sapphire Tavern, Toronto, In the 1960s, Toronto the Good was one of a few places on Earth where a young, black drag queen soul singer could become a nightclub headliner and recording artist. From Jerry Lincoln's liner notes for this R&B gem: What are Jackie's likes and dislikes? Well, you know Jackie likes "chicken". Even where food is concerned Jackie likes chicken. The only problem is when Jackie suggests, "Let's go out and get some chicken after the show", you can't be too sure what he has in mind.' It wasn't stopping at Chick-fil-A.
