Jackie Shane was a familiar name in the 1960s soul hub in Toronto, only to mysteriously disappear from music altogether in 1971. It wasn't until 2017 when the Numero Group producer Douglas McGowan convinced her to return and release a compilation box set album of her greatest hits, which earned her a Grammy and a resurgence in her fanbase. Today we will explore what made the underground soul singer so revolutionary.

I am 79 years old and when I was 16 I managed to get into a party above the Zanzibar and I did not know Jackie was Trans. During the evening I managed to hold down 2 beers( a lot for a kid) and Jackie asked me to dance. I thought I was dancing with a beautiful woman and as a naive kid when she kissed me I kissed her back. My friends laughed and told me later I had kissed a Trans woman and I did not know what that meant until someone said she was man. At first I was embarrassed but when the party was breaking up she came over and said thanks for the dance that was fun. Then I felt fine and became a huge fan. A lesson learned and a wonderful memory. Thank you Jackie

How did anyone know about Trans people back then? I didn't know about the term until the 1990s and I grew up in the late 60s.

Being from Toronto,I remember Jackie from the 60s when I was working in the clubs ,I had the single Any Other Way in my record collection. I still have that song on my ipad and I am now in my 70s . What a great entertainer! I really miss that time,it was the best ever.

I'm 76 and used to catch Jackie with Frank Motley's Crew at the Sapphire Tavern fairly regularly. There's a recording of this period. Jackie's patter between songs was fabulous. We were never quite sure who he/she was referring to as her chickens.

I saw her so many times here in Toronto ... great performer, courageous groundbreaker ... the local rock station, 1050 CHUM, put out a little weekly hit parade pamphlet called the CHUM Chart and I remember Jackie being on it ... we considered her a Torontonian, CDN speak for "homie" ... happy memories of a great person

@@outandaboutnyc2579I am happy to let you know the movie is out now. It is called "Any Other Way: The Jacke Shane Story". I saw it last night, Aug 28th at TIFF Lightbox Theatre, Cinema 3 on King Street in Toronto. It was excellent and I recommend it for everyone in the area. I would venture to say it should be available in NYC or will come on streaming service soon.

There was NO such talk of trans femmes then ever. I was around then, remember it all . Jackie was known as Swish. Ir was a time of The Great Imposters , St Charles Tavern, the Manatee and our gay culture was not based on your racial gender narrative. What do you mean that trans barely get a chance to breathe? Whens the last time you were in Toronto, more rainbow flags, various genders doing their thing , just as Jackie was doing theirs. Dont make this about victim hood. We had some incredible black drag icons back then and they were stars , not victims.Learn from people who were actually part of the Yonge Street culture back then.
