Excellent catch on the pickup. Jackie used to play Strats, and when Epiphone came calling she had them install a Strat pickup so she could switch between it and the humbuckers. She calls this particular guitar "Selena." She also has a gold Epiphone named "Goldie" as a backup. Yes, Rodney "Rodzilla" Hyder is a left-handed drummer on a right-handed kit. He played 25 years with Jackie's dad, retired bassist/R&B frontman Andrew Venson, before she "inherited" him. BTW, Rodney is also blind. His feel is nothing less than otherworldly. Great breakdown, Michael. I am totally nuts about Jackie. I think she's the most exciting original indie artist of her generation.

She’s one of the best locals here in Austin! A true legend!

She has enormous stage presence and the talent to back it up. WOW! Think she loves what she's doing? I went looking for her other videos after listening to this reaction. On some of them, she echo sings with her guitar leads. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard. Super difficult. Thanks for the introduction..

Such a unique group of intensely talented musicians! The drummer is blind which adds an entirely different dimension. He can play ANY beat. The guy is incredible.
@vernvartdal647910 ай бұрын
It’s a music family thing with the drummer. He played for her father for years then went to her. Rodney Hyder is his name. He is blind perhaps leading to different techniques. He’s greatness. The band is from 1 to 4 pieces depending on the show. Jackie is pretty amazing in person. She hangs with fans on social media which is how I found her during COVID.

Jackie Venson to me means a unique vocal+guitar delivery, so much positive vibes, and endless primo content, from an independent artist. Start with 'Witchcraft' and the ride never stops.

As a longtime guitarist in Austin, I was sitting in the car queue for the 2020 "Pandemic Version" of Trail of Lights, 1 week away from moving away to another state when NPR ATX first played her on the radio. I was immediately hooked. When I got home, where we were all "sheltering" in 2020, I immediately KZbind her and first saw her "Always Free" live at Stubbs show that she once played on SRV's birthday and was blown away by her energy, voice, the loop pedal, and her absolutely killer Strat skills. Funny she even had a set at TRCOA, a studio where I once worked long before she finally appeared on the scene. I'm glad she did. Bc she IS indeed the real, triple-threat deal, and whenever I later found myself missing ATX, I'd always find myself re-looking her up just to support & be reinsipired seeing a fellow Austin guitarist finally "making it". She's the next SRV! And her show on ACL wearing the BLM dress absolutely rocked. Mad respect to you Jackie, and thank you Michael for finally sharing & dissecting her music to your audience!! You're so right about the division of time & space, and the overall feel this whole group has. No good guitarist ever sleeps on what the drums, bass, and keys are doing, and no great guitarist should ever sleep on what Jackie's doing rn, especially given she's only recently come from the keys herself haha GET TO PRACTICING Y'ALL

Great video! On another note, I would love to see your breakdown of Gary Clark's "Please come home" from his live album. (The live album with the cover that's black and white photo of Gary on Stage) it's one of the best live solo's I've ever heard and is strangely difficult though its all blues based. I think you would love breaking that one down. 😊
@roywilson88775 ай бұрын
Hey I'm glad you got a chance to check her out. I just been a fan of hers for the past year and a half two years since I heard her so long with Laney Wilson at the CMAs. I was in another room and I heard the solo or getting a cup of coffee and I ran back in to see what the heck that was. It took me about 2 hours before somebody on Laney Wilson's page said something about the guitar player being Jackie Vincent but it was Jackie v e n s o n. So I looked up her touring schedule and she was coming here to Florida for one day opening for mojo but for $120 knowing she was the opening act I couldn't do that for just 30 minutes. Not mojo Mofro. Plus I just saw mofro a few months earlier at a blues festival. Veterans Day I drove to Houston to see her. And it was just her and Rodney and it was an excellent show. And yes she did stand around after the show took pictures signed autographs and it was worth the drive. Plus I have relatives and friends in Houston but I didn't care about that. That wasn't even why I drove there. I love how you break everything down. And you get excited about stuff too that's great when you hear anything and you show him respect to the guys let them know you didn't not hear the base in the keyboardist. And I too have tried to do those organ fields on my guitar with my electro-harmonics c9

Hello Michael, Thank you. Your love passion and excitement for music are so beautiful to see. I subscribed to your channel a while ago when you did the songs for your friend that passed away, today was a very difficult and dark day for me but you gave me a smile and lifted me up out of the darkness if even only for a moment you gave me hope and strength to keep trying. I did not know you were a blues man! And with 1000+ videos i am wondering if you have done a breakdown of JJ Grey and Mofro doing This River? I guess i need to start looking through your library of vids... I love music and it seems like it is just about all i have left to hold on to, please dont ever stop spreading the joy and knowledge of music, you have a gift (several) and a passion. Keep up the good work. Thank you again... You will never know how much I appreciate you being there right when i needed you with what you brought me today. My deapest and most sincere thanks and appreciation.

I live in Maine and thought I'd never see her in person, to my surprise 3 yrs after listening for the first time I was able to see her 2x in one week. She returned the state where she went to school Berkeley in Massachusetts and I bought tickets the day they sold. If you ever get the chance to see her please do, in person is totally amazing. CHECK OUT BACK TO EARTH...THE BEST JV SONG EVAH!!! Now its title is the Cadillac Song as they used it in a commercial last year...also that was a custom Les Paul made specifically for her and Rodney used to be her dads drummer

8:40 forgets the key... It's really not that hard but I have some advice. You should practice naming the notes at every fret on the guitar. You seem to go blind when you move out of the open position.
