Using baby wipes as an artistic tool is one of my secret weapons - I love how easy it is to glaze with them, wipe up water soluble crayons, take paint away to reveal layers underneath, and easy clean up! Here's a REAL TIME video demonstrating how I use baby wipes in some of my most common uses all in one painting session.
Materials used:
Canson mixed media sketchbook - amzn.to/43MN2cE
Nova Color acrylic paint - www.novacolorpaint.com
Neocolor crayons - amzn.to/3rO5MeO
Collage paper
Baby wipes (of course) - amzn.to/3KkKXxM
Comments, questions, and shares are always welcome and appreciated - Thank you for watching!

Nice outcome but I always worry about the affect on the planet with all the rubbish we make during the creative process. I like to use rags from unwanted clothing which can be dampened, retarder and glazing medium also help prevent the paint from drying too quickly. 😊

I just started using baby wipes after they had dried in fusible art along with tyvek yep the stuff they use on houses and a soldering iron. You'll be surprised at how well they work together. You can also incorporate paint into the mix that you're putting together you're making a kind of sandwich of different things. I added in some translucent organza fabric, a few flex of aluminum foil from the top of my creamers, a lot of different things and the soldering iron and tyvek somehow bond things together beautifully get some very interesting designs especially with random holes that permit other layers to be seen through the layer on top etc give it a whirl it'll keep it out of the landfill and inside a frame which is where we want it! Enjoy
@RebeccaA-dn4nl
@RebeccaA-dn4nl 11 ай бұрын
Oh I forgot also dryer sheets the kind that you put into your dryer to make things not stick to each other and smell pretty? You can use those as well as tyvek and baby wipes to fuse into a multi-layer creation which you can then do anything with you can sew it onto something you can embellish it you can put it into a collage, you can glue it onto a canvas and then paint over and around it the possibilities are really endless!

felt really blah and uninspired today, so i came to watch this. thanks for always having something i can watch to feel like even if i just move paint around, i make something that didn't exist before. like i already know it, but watching and vibing with you while i try to push myself to even get the paint bottles open really helps. i tape my edges so i don't have the curling issue but what is this wizardry with the gloss medium on the back????? i've never seen anyone do that to flatten out pages! i'd feel like i had to stop bc i'd be scared of gluing my book shut.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 9 ай бұрын
Hahaha! I’m pretty sure I learned that flattening trick from Jane Davies (@jdaviesVT) a few years ago. It does feel a bit like magic, doesn’t it? 😆 The gloss medium I use is super thin, so it dries quickly, which also helps me to not glue things together. 🤗 So glad you felt a bit more inspired while you watched ❤️

Not sure where this is going to end up, but I'm 20 minutes in and am just loving how the painting on the left looks like a snowy winter scene, with a river that is not frozen over running through it, and the land to the right of the river has 4 bare trees standing out of it (the white china marker), and the quinacridone gold is like shadows or sunlight, and the water has lovely reflections in it. (And for sure - the job of an artist is to experiment, so of course we overdo it! LOL. ) I love where this is going and love the variety of things we use for art tools! 🙂

I haven't tried this but I think you could also play with baby wipes particularly the ones that you've already used so they've got pigment on them, and with a soldering iron poke holes in them at random and then layer them so the colors show through at different points you can then take a piece of either parchment paper or wax paper and very lightly iron them or in my case I haven't tried an iron yet but I like to use a hot air gun that's not the right word but you know what I mean and that will melt the layers onto each other. For the reason that it's plastic I strongly recommend that you have a window open or if you can even work outside that would be better but you will get an interesting product with the fused melty things. They shrink, then change shape, as well as of course the holes from the soldering iron at a lot of interest. I haven't done it yet but I bet you could have some fun with some glittery or iridescent paint on the layer that's underneath one of the holes just to add interest. I've also further embellished my layers with things like stick on butterflies or anything that I can add with hot glue that makes it look more intriguing. The sky's the limit. And I guess I'm saying we don't have to put this stuff into the land waste we can keep it as art and mount it on a board or on a canvas and paint around it, over it, whatever you want to do art is where you find it! Just saying

This is the first of your videos i've come across. I like this technique you are showing us with the baby wipes. I've not yet ventured into acrylics but am starting to build from a watercolour medium a mixed media pallet with some old oil pastels, pastels, pencils, charcoal, fineliners, inks and paint pens. I have a little amount of cheap acrylic that im yet to break open. To give you an idea of how new this is to me. My question is, can you use and do you use this technique on canvas as well as the mixed media paper?

If you gesso the paper and the canvas, it should work the same on both substrates. Regardless of gesso you can use baby wipes on both, but the effects will be a bit different 🤗

I owe you big! Really! I enjoyed this video, but the big part is how to deal with paper curling. I went through art school in the 1970s and after so long, still didn't have a really good way to deal with it. So, you would think it might be taught in school? So many things were not. A huge one is that rubbing alcohol dissolves acrylic paint. It can be a wonderful way to dissolve paint on the page, or canvas, etc. I also learned this on KZbin. But it also helped save many dried paint brushes. I'd been using ammonia, which does work but it's super stinky and doesn't work as well as rubbing alcohol. I've brought a lot of brushes back from the dead with alcohol. And it can do cool things to the paint, surface. I spray it on and then use a paint scrubber and paper towel to wipe it off. It can take off a lot so you have to be careful.

I love these pages and have wanted to do more of this kind of work. I have no formal artist training. I just play and dabble. My question is when you are making a piece like this how many “rules” are you following. You said the one page has promise but weren’t sure about the other one? To me they are both pleasing to look at. I have no idea what kinds of things you are following to make your choices. Can you tell me more about the criteria? Thank you 😊

It’s not crazy, mixed media artists have been using them for years, especially with stencils. It’s a shame they’re a terrible plastic waste into the environment. I tried techniques with them myself but I couldn’t justify buying them for art. I use paper towels or biodegradable wipes and try to encourage others to buy them if they really want to achieve similar results.

Beautiful finished paintings! Question: the “gloss medium” that you squirt from the plain squeeze bottle-is that the same as liquid medium? The only gloss medium I’ve seen is in gel form and would not be liquid enough to pour out like that.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 10 ай бұрын
You can use gel medium too, if you like - I use that sometimes too. If you’re trying to get it into a squeeze bottle, gel wouldn’t be ideal, you’re right. Perhaps call your local art store and ask how to thin the gel medium to be more fluid? I don’t know if it would be as easy as adding water or if you’d need to add a liquid medium. I get my gloss medium online from nova color paints. It’s just called gloss medium. ❤️

I have to ask. Though I paint and in all sizes I never quite gotten into the habit of using a sketchbook. When I look at your 2 pages, particularly the right side, to me that’s a finished work. So how do take this and all the work you put into this and make it into a definitive work, bigger or same size. How do you remember what you did to redo it on better paper or canvas? Sorry for the many questions.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 7 ай бұрын
Great questions. Personally, I don’t redo any of my work. I’ve tried in the past and it never looks half as good as the original bc my freedom is gone and has been switched with copying mode. Copying mode feels like a boring and impossible task and I don’t enjoy it at all 😆 The sketchbook exercises can be pulled out and framed or cut down to make cards or whatever else I decide to do. My work is very improvisational and I just work in whatever scale I’m using on a given day and see what I can make of it ❤️

For sure this is not a solution to the microplastics problem but, when I think of the (probably) billions of gallons of house paint that are sold every year (which are also acrylic) not sure that a bit of residue remaining after a painting is finished is going to do much to further harm the environment. What artists might do would be to work on multiple paintings at one time. That way the main bulk of excess paint would be used up and would not end up in the environment for now. Of course LONG TERM and given enough time absolutely everything will eventually end up in the environment including the Mona Lisa and every other painting ever painted. In the history of the Earth even the great pyramid will be gone. Stay safe, healthy & happy.

Thank you! That was an amazing art video. It’s very inspirational and I will be trying your techniques. Reading through all the comments about how bad plastics are, I can only assume people are making these comments from computers and smart phones that are made from plant-based materials, such as recycled mashed potatoes, and that their technological devices do not contain lithium batteries or plastics. While I do agree that plastics are a bad thing, I find that people who criticise one particular use of it are happy to use technology that relies on the petro-chemical plastics industry to exist, not to mention the mining of lithium and cobalt by some of the worlds poorest people who are slaves to those who own the mines. The devices we are using to communicate our comments to each other cannot exist without plastics and batteries. And these devices are extremely bad for the planet once they are made obsolete by the next version and need to be disposed of. But it’s so much easier to point fingers at the naughty people using acrylic paint and baby wipes than to admit we are ALL part of the problem. Practically EVERYTHING we use in daily life contains some form of plastics. There are ecology damaging things that I don’t like - for example, It makes me cross that people are taking all manner of toxic medicines (like birth control pills for example) which they then excrete down the toilet into the Eco system. The synthetic hormones in these medications are playing havoc with human and animal life. But I can’t, in all good conscience, start lecturing people on what drugs they are peeing into the water system while I am using things myself that aren’t good for the planet. And I can only assume that people criticising the use of paint and baby wipes would never take a plane trip or eat food that was transported in a vehicle pumping out toxins into the environment. Because one plane trip alone pumps out tons and tons of CO2 and Nitrogen Oxide. The pollution from air traffic kills thousands of people every year but hey, let’s pick on baby wipes even though we might be flyers ourselves. Every single person in the civilised world is using something or participating in activities that are bad for the planet, because big business has created that world to make billions and trillions out of us using them. Virtue signalling and pointing out what others are doing wrong is so much easier than doing an audit in our own homes and lives and seeing just how much hidden plastic is inherent in our daily lives. How about we all start asking stores how the products we buy got there and start boycotting anything that wasn’t manufactured within walking distance and does not use ANY plastic? Good luck with that! I’m not going to criticise you or anyone else for using baby wipes while I drive a car, eat food that was transported by vehicles powered by gas, and use a phone, computer and iPad which one day, will all end up being ‘rubbish’ to be disposed of. And if anyone wants to argue with my comment, you’d better not be doing it on a phone/tablet/computer made with any plastic or lithium or cobalt because if so, I will call you a virtue signalling hypocrite. Anyone who replies in handwriting, in charcoal, on a banana skin, flown to me by a pigeon will escape such judgement. Whoops, no, better not use charcoal because that involves burning. Use blueberry juice. 😂 Thank you Jackie for your lovely video and beautiful art. 🙏

I’ve been a subscriber for a while now, and I love your work, including this one. However, I don’t want to be a party pooper, but wet wipes are contributing hugely to the pollution of the planet including ocean life. Using acrylic paint is already damaging, but wet wipes just double down on the harm. I use damp cloths from old bedding, clothing etc, to get the same effect. “Wet wipes are an environmental hazard that can have far-reaching consequences. Not only do they contain plastic and other non-biodegradable materials, but when these plastics break down into microplastics, they can enter the food chain and disrupt entire ecosystems” ~ TruEarth.

I’m not an eco warrior or anything, I just had visions of however many followers you have suddenly flooding the global ecosystem with thousands of wet wipes, and they are so harmful to our ocean life. I use biodegradable wet toilet paper for everything others use baby wipes for. It has the same properties concerning usage, but the sheets are thinner and smaller. With the acrylic paint on it you of course can't throw it in the toilet, but it does not add to the Grey waste by itself. The biodegradable toilet paper is made of plant based bioplastic that breaks down within a few weeks or months by itself, depending on the placement. I'm sure you can buy these in the US as well.

Thanks... I just finished reading A Poison Like No Other about microplastics, and have decided to give up acrylics in my art practice... I just can't bear the thought anymore. Unfortunately bioplastic, even if it breaks down faster, still has all the nasty chemicals in it that make plastic so toxic, just like regular plastic does. So... no more acrylics and no more baby wipes for me. It was a shocking read. (Off topic I know... but perhaps pertinent given how much plastic is in many art supplies!).

@@missdeesaccount Thank you too! Unfortunately, if you put your water (with plastic in it) into a bucket of sand, then you're left with what to do with the bucket of sand. Not just the oceans are filled with plastic; did you know that millions of tons of plastic are in the air? We breathe it, eat it, drink it daily. Babies are now born pre-polluted with plastic (via the placenta). We walk around in clouds of it as it comes off our clothes. And of course all plastic has toxic chemicals in it, that leach out over time. Personally I think plastic should be banned entirely. Almost everything we use every day has plastic in it or is made of plastic, so it's quite the pickle we've created for ourselves. I do hope that we artists (and aspiring artists) can find (once again) non-plastic ways to make art! I've decided to stick to pencils, charcoal, paper, etc. for now as I explore this more. The book had a profound effect on me (as I'm sure you can tell).
