In this 2-part series I experimented with an exercise I learned from a free Judy Woods workshop earlier this year.
Part 1: Using four 20"x20" canvases, I varied each painting with slightly different interpretations of the process and it was fun to try a new way of making a background. Watch Part 1 here: • Abstract Background - ...
This video is Part 2 of the series. In this video I add blocks of color and focal points to each canvas using acrylic inks and representational silhouettes of leaves and branches from my garden.
You can find Judy Woods' amazing artmaking here: @judywoodsart6709 and here: www.judywoodsa...
Materials used: Canvases, acrylic paint, graphite, color shaper, and collage.

"Just drawing some clothes for my plant". Awesome! They are very much still in your style. Because of the way my brain works I sometimes fight with it when it wants an answer to why a piece of collage is placed where it is. Sometimes it makes sense to me. I suppose that's the thing with art, there's not necessarily a why, or a right or wrong. Totally understand about the busy one. I too loved those dots from the water drops/splatters. Thank you again for the time you take to make these videos for us. ❤

I did this workshop too. I struggled for the longest time with doing a representational object in an abstract and then I realised that it actually creates a focal point. So I gave in to that and worked everything else with respect to the focal point. This was an interesting mind set. I hadn’t thought of having a focal point in an abstract. The one that I didn’t like then magically came together and the other two are still in an incomplete stage…hanging on the wall waiting for me to finish 😂 Since I’m a bit bedridden after smashing up my knee, I have been contemplating them quite a bit and have some sense now of what to do next.

Good point about the representational part being the focal point! Mine are still sitting here next to me waiting for some kind of next step(s) 😂 Glad at least one of us has an idea of what to do next 😆 So sorry to hear about your knee - I pray that it heals quickly and completely ❤️

Hi, Jackie - I'm do glad you did Part 2! I loved it. I have been watching you for about two months or so and really enjoy what you're doing (and yes, I have yelled 'Nooooo' when you start to add some collage pieces! My name is Linda (the F is part of my business name - not a statement LOL) and I am in Des Plaines so not far. I am also an artist and love it. Thought it was time to say hello!!

Your interpretation of this botanical ideation is a prime example of your artistic expression. OMG, that sounds so condescending, but sincerely, these are very successful. From you, I clued into the fact that mine were unsatisfactory because I wasn't invested in the "botanical" inspiration. We can't love our work if we don't embrace the imagery. Hence, your hydrangea was probably the winner. Thanks, Jackie.

“We can’t love our work if we don’t embrace the imagery.” Well said, Ann! That’s it! I wasn’t invested some of the botanical elements and it shows that I was just going through the motions. Or at least it feels flat to me - there’s no “feeling” in some of them. Thanks for articulating what I couldn’t! ❤️❤️❤️

For me the most important outcome of this share is your own expressed struggle with exploring someone else's style. When we follow the tutorial as closely as possible to learn how a technique is accomplished - still our outcome is always just an interpretation. From there we decide if it's something we'd like to incorporate in to our own work. The backgrounds and the colour blocking (with the ink) is definitely what I've witnessed in what you've shared and come to expect to be Jackie. The representational elements not so much - they seemed foreign until you came back to them and made them your own. That said, as you continue to evolve them (and I'm pretty sure you will), if they were part of a gallery of your work, I would consider them an exploration on your part. So in other words (LOL) I don't have a definitive opinion! It will be interesting to see what the future brings. Thank you again for sharing. Your videos are always well crafted and engaging.

Thanks for your thoughtful response (as always ❤️)! I agree that the botanical elements were (are? 😅) disconnected and “other”. I’m realizing that I wasn’t invested in most of the botanic shapes. Or at least invested differently than I usually am. So interesting to me that that disconnect is so visible to others. And it puts words to the “something” that didn’t feel right about at least 2 of them. They will continue to evolve and I’ll show where they end up once I circle back to them again ☺️

Happy New Year! I love this, you make it look so easy I find it very difficult watching you cover up such lovely designs, but it still come out so nice. I signed up for Judy Woods' workshop coming up and I'm excited about that hopefully I'll understand layering over what I think is already ok (my creative block)

Very interesting to see you do something so different -- have to say I'm not a fan of representational art (or even partially representational art) -- for me it's a kind of shortcut that prevents real exploration and a distraction from where the real interest is. I'm sure it's beneficial to push your boundaries but for what it's worth I would rather have seen how you would have taken the black and white further according to your own instincts. Always appreciate your sharing the experiments though ❤

Part of me also wishes I would have used the backgrounds as a base for more intuitive, abstract paintings too 😂 The other part is happy I tried out this way of doing things because I learned some new things about what I like and don’t like. These canvases may have more layers added to them for a part 3 down the road a bit… 😂

i am completely biased in favor of non rep art and not interested in rep art, so sprinkle several pounds of salt on this opinion. painting #3 is very appealing, but painting #2 is my fave because its. less rep and allows more Jackie to shine through. : )

There was a point - before the plant part - when it looked like it was going in the right direction. But as soon as you added that butterfly paper my heart sank! Noooo! It just didn’t look right at all. Sorry, but those butterflies really spoil your work every time you use them. I genuinely love your videos, and your work is usually uber-cool and abstract until you add random pieces of twee butterfly wrapping paper... (don’t hate me!)
