Hi Jack, nice finish on that bowl, with a spin flourish at the end, great stuff, have a good weekend, got a pre-wedding dinner tonight wedding tomorrow and christening on sunday and we are in a heatwave....i'll have a nice breeze round the Trossachs with ma kilt on. Cheers Will.

Really nice wood brother,. I liked that you roughed it up with the steel wool, it gave it a character all its own! Great job brother great job. I would imagine you need to sharpen your tools up fairly regularly.

Probably not as often as you would think. Depends what I’m turning. The Tormek sharpening system is amazing. 😊👍🏻

Very nice. Was glad to see that you finished the bottom round. My recent discussions with folks in the know about the calabash has lead to my understanding that the traditional calabash has a round bottom where the modernized, more mainland “calabash” uses a foot (or recess) to force the bowl to sit flat. Nicely done Jack!

Thanks Doug.. The calabash bowl is originally a bowl made from a squash or gourd.. which is why a calabash bowl must have a rounded bottom.. otherwise it not a calabash bowl.. at least in my opinion..😊

What a great piece of wood lots of colour and awesome grain. The bowl turned out magnificently and I like the finish you use it really brings the wood alive. Thanks for a great video and what finish do you use to make shine like your items do Jack you really are clever. Amanda x

Thanks Amanda. I used home made shellac on this one. I often use microcrystalline wax, lacquer and Yorkshire Grit. More than one way to skin a cat. 😊👍🏻

@@JackMackWoodturning We live in NE Texas and I see some, but not a lot. They are supposed to be fast growing and most that I see are in yards planted for shade.

My Daddy and Granddaddy both were. They had a sawmill and pulpwood yard and I have loved all things made of wood since I was baby. I have a black walnut bowl with bark edge made from tree in my Granddaddy's yard. Can't wait to see what you are creating next :)

I aspire to reach your level, turned my first ever bowl today. used some silver birch fire wood as am cheap lol it came out great with the contrast between bark and timber. also that apple River bowl you turned in 3 peices blew my mind :)

Another beautiful project! The grain was really beautiful and the oil you used brought it out very well. I noticed you sharpening at the beginning of the video. Do you use any carbide tools or all steel (or whatever they are made of)? I do love your work. Be blessed!

Thanks julee. I despise carbide tip tools. Lots of folk who don’t know any better this that they make woodturning “easy” but they actually just tear wood and it leads people to never discover the difference between cutting wood and ripping wood. Traditional tools all the way for me.. I do have one carbide tip tool, I use it on very abrasive material, rarely.. and never on wood..

In my opinion this is a utility piece. I piece to be used every day and it’s very basic in its design. A piece is only ever worth what the buyer will pay for it. It’s very difficult to price work.
