I remember his tv programme in 1950's. I know he had money troubles despite being a perfectionist (or hard taskmaster?) as this record (my scratchiest) shows. Some of the boys broke away and formed a band with the slogan) "Pleasure without the Payne"! It wasn't Jimmy Wornell was it?

Jimmy Wornell was not involved. During mid 1933 Jack Payne under doctors orders rested. The band was not paid during this period. The majority took up residence at the Road House on the Barnett by pass. When Jack heard they were all dismissed. Subsquently, they billed themselves as "Pleasure without Payne". Jack took out an injunction against them forbidding the use of the slogan. The band became known as The Barnstormers and made a few records on the (black) Winner and Sterno labels.

Thanks. That puts it all in context. Being such a fan of JP, it had worried me for 40 years!

Payne was really good, but when that needle goes into the groove,i feel as though i'm about to be tortured, but that is not the case. The result is really good music.
