So here's the breakdown: her mom is white and her dad is black and her mom was disowned by her family for marrying a black man. They divorced when she was three and she didn't have a relationship with her dad. He died while she was making this album and they had finally reconnected. After he died, she found a scrapbook he kept with everything she ever made for him, newspaper articles, etc. So that's the scrapbook in the video.. then later on in the church there are sunflowers b/c before he died he was allergic to all flowers except sunflowers so they had those in his hospital room. It's a tribute to him. This song also comes right after she got dismissed from her record contract with Virgin, had bad reviews for Glitter, and had a breakdown (which now we know was the beginning of her Bi-Polar disorder). Also, it was just a year after 9/11 so there were just so many things going on for her. Sorry that was a lot but that covers most of it lol

Mariah was the biggest selling global artist of the 90s. She has a #1 on the Hot 100 for ten consecutive years. After moving record levels, she released Glutter, a soundtrack album that flopped and its subsequent film bombed at the Box Office. Her new record label gave her millions just to leave the company. Mariah had an emotional breakdown, was hospitalised and diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder. This song was her comeback and a declaration that she weathered the storm and survived. The video also is dedicated to her biological father who recently passed at the time.

Yes, the video was paying homage to her parents. Sunflowers were a flower her grandmother used to grow and during Mariahs fathers passing... Mariah would bring sunflowers to him. This song not only was an anthem for her lambs but also for her. Mariah was going through it both personally and professionally. This was the bridge to The Emancipation of Mimi. 🌻💜 I actually met Mariah within a week of her recording this video. So, the song and video are so close to me. By the way, Beyonce also commented on this music video saying, "Her voice comes from God. You can hear the gospel in her voice. The song and video are just beautiful."

“Through the Rain” was the first song Mariah released (2002) after her stress and breakdown while filming the movie “Glitter” (2001) and simultaneously recording the Glitter album. On top of that, Glitter was released on 9/11/01, and underperformed tremendously as it was only in theaters for one week. That should explain the context of this song. This video was definitely a tribute to her parents, but more-so to Mariah’s father, Alfred, who died in July 2002 before this album was released. His favorite flowers were sunflowers.

The sunflowers she is surrounded by in the church are in honour of her father, they were the only flowers his allergies could stand when he was in the hospital dying of cancer. She wrote the song sunflowers for alfred roy on this same album (charmbracelet) she sang a very emotional version of through the rain at the american music awards in 2003 and dedicated it to him. It was also one her first appearances following her "breakdown" the year before, you should check it out as one of her most emotional live performances. I loved your reaction when you realised it was the parents at the end ❤

OMG, like where or how do I begin?? Okay so I'm so late to the party b/c I just happened to discover you while watching other reactions to Mariah by other people. I'll try to be as brief as possible. So after watching a couple of your reaction vids of MC I knew w/o a doubt I must see them all. I know you're older now & in a new & different stage of life but you really made this song hit differently & so deep that it was like not just hearing it for the first time again but your descriptives in tandem with your own raw realization & real-time state of vulnerability emotionally... You see I've been singing my entire life & it's literally my identity & I've been a ride-or-die MC fan from the very second I heard her sing Vision of Love when she debuted. No other vocalist in musical history has, can, or will move my soul the way Mariah has. You absolutely nailed it when you made the statement about how her lyrics evoke feelings so much differently than other artists. As you were stating that, I had this flood of emotions going into overdrive because of the truth your voice was making but watching your own facial & body language reaction within a reaction evoked my own long-standing established connection to her songwriting and that moment was the very statement you were making. Even in a four yr old video by a stranger she posseses the power & ability to unite & move people at our very core. I must sound like I should be committed 🤪🤣 It's just that I'm so unbelievably happy to see younger generations showing love & appreciation for her after everything she has endured in the industry. 4yrs late but your vids were/are too damned good not to show my appreciation for you & your willingness to share your own brand of vulnerability. Miss you most at xmas vid I said, Damn this dude & Mariah is gonna be the desth of me & I swear 2 seconds later you said, Mariah leave me alone... See how she does us all? LOL!! I noticed a vid title like "no more reactions" & I gotta say I was instantly bummed but I totally get it & respect your journey. My last statement is this; Mariah Carey isn't a once in a lifetime vocalist, Mariah Carey is a once in human existence vocalist & songwriter. 🤍🎶🎵🎼🎙️🦋

Much more so than the video, this song has an extra special meaning as it represents New Mariah - post the whole Glitter debacle. It is an MC declaration - that she ain't dead yet, she on the other side y'all & that she's a survivor too (not just beyonce). A song that no one was waitin' for , as she was literally what kids today called "cancelled". It didn't matter tho, as MC had to make it anyway, a form of getting it-off-my-chest song, a pure rollercoaster R&B ballad only MC could do. A minimal hit in comparison and definitely not a return to form chartwise, MC took her minor hits and rolled with the punches, this time not by sabotage but by audience fatigue. Even tho this was the first original work MC album in years, people were sick of hearing about all her troubles and personal drama. .MC the tabloid queen took away from any musical interests previously held by the lambs & now replaced & outnumbered by a new batch called the haters. MC had alot to prove and did so artistically if not comercially. Those that slept on Charm bracelet were especially shocked just two short years later when we belong together blew up globally and Emancipation smashed records everywhere. Jack keep up the good work 👍
