You wouldn’t say that Mariah is more talented than Whitney or Celine ? They didn’t write their own songs. They are performers, not songwriters. And neither one of them could sing her songs, yet I don’t think she would have had any trouble singing theirs. Mariah Carey has 19 #1 hits. 18 of which she wrote herself because one of them is a cover. How is she not more talented ? Not to mention she has directed her own videos, produces and writes her own music, and is also an author. I won’t even get started on all her accolades and accomplishments, of which she is the the sole record setter.

This song didn't make it to the Billboard hot 100 because it had a limited release and made ineligible for the chart. They changed that rule until 2004 and this was released 1998. This is one of her most personal songs and has one of the hardest climaxes in music. Is a continuous crescendo and ends in upper chest belting with several mellismas. Basically the entire song is sung in head voice which is difficult because you need a lot of stamina. The live performances of this song are amazing

And it's a shame that people criticize her voice at this point in time, but fail to recognize that she is still fairly talented with regards to her writing her own music. To me it's kind of a slap in a face because I don't often see her brag about her skills or her writing and she tries to stay humble for the most part, and I'm sure if she did brag about her great of an artist she is people would still criticize her lol So she can't win either way. I'm not sure if you've done these songs, but please listen to Looking In and Portrait as I feel they give you a deeper glance into what she's been dealing with, how she's been dealing with it and her thoughts/feelings on it(and supposedly these songs go hand-and-hand if I'm not mistaken). It's actually pretty sad to constantly be compared with YOURSELF...as if it's not actually YOU that's being compared to yourself....It's bizarre.

The music video is based off a dream Mariah had. She said she cut her hand on the barbed wire fence, but didn't want the video to appear gory. The horse jumped over the fence, but she got stuck before eventually breaking through it. The beginning peep hole part is a reference to a Marilyn Monroe movie.

This songs kills me every time I listen to it. There are so many symbolism in this video which most people would miss if they are not familiar with the Tommy-Mariah story. The horses, the person looking through a hole at her, the tears on the tree, the actual tree being there...Ahhh man...There are so many things! The golden chandelier in this debilitated house! The climax in Butterfly always makes me want to weep!

The horses in the video symbolise a captive horse being freed to run in the wild with wild horses. It’s also a metaphor representing Mariah’s life: she was going through a divorce with her very controlling husband Tommy Mottola and felt as if she was being set free. The song as a whole is about what Mariah wishes he had said to her during the break up. Has he said those things Mariah believed they would’ve ended up back together after some time apart. This song always amazes me with the insane vocals, powerful story and awesome video!

This song is very special and still makes me tear up after all these years. My mom and dad went through a bad divorce and being an only child I felt like I could not talk or let out how I was feeling at the time. This album and especially this song got me through really tough times as a teen at the time. Columbia/Mottola did Butterfly dirty. This song deserved more support, but at least we got a music video and some live performances. Butterfly as an album should’ve been bigger.
