its not because of calculation time alone but also player pool. blitz and bullet have larger and larger player pools in online format. OTB these ratings are generally closer because the player pool for otb remains more or less the same. Sure the time format will favour certain players over others due to individual strenght and weeknesses

this is definitely true to an extent, but generally players start playing Rapid, and then try to play Blitz. they can't help themselves but calculating everything and refuse to just use quick intuition and end up flagging easily.

I always played so slow. Especially in blitz, I always lose when I am winning because I have no time to think
@jacksarkisian

yeah I feel this. I think for me I just don't like the idea of leaving things uncalculated - and this just means that Blitz isn't for me. the whole point of Chess for me is to play the best moves I can think of and not the ones I'm forced to play because of time pressure. eventually you'll get better at calculating fast enough for Blitz, but it still might be a while away.

Time management is the bane of my existence as I lose 80% of my bullet & blitz games on time, mostly in middle or endgames. Also, I don’t pre-move as trying to improve on board play not run out time; this is a handicap vs opponents who pre-move. For sure learning openings & endgame technique saves time!

I have the opposite issue. I started out 10 years ago playing only bullet and hyperbullet and only recently switched over to blitz and rapid a year ago. I'll find myself getting impatient in rapid games and often blunder a major piece simply because I made the first possible move I could see. Alternatively I'll be in a blitz game with 2 minutes left, while my opponent has 5 seconds left. I'll try to flag them by playing as fast as possible and then they'll checkmate me. Any tips for slowing down? Even if I play a 30 minute lichess game and tell myself every move to slow down, I'll still blunder with 20 minutes left on my clock.

i actually had this problem with Classical Chess when i first started - the only real solution is to care about your rating. if you only care about individual games, you're going to use your rating as a currency to try and get an "immortal game" as quickly as possible. if all you're worried about is playing incredible games to show to your friends - you simply won't fix your problem in Rapid. care about your rating, set goals and be disciplined with the games you play. play for wins, not flashy moves. play the safe option 9 times out of 10, don't play risky Chess, and so on. it can feel very boring playing Chess this way, but if that's the case maybe longer time controls just aren't for you. when I first started playing Classical it was just an excuse to go and see my friends. i didn't care about my rating because I didn't have one - now that I have a rating that I care about and want to improve I use my time much more efficiently. here's a good example of a game in my first ever tournament. I played against someone I was much better than, but was only using 1 or 2 minutes per move. ended up throwing the game away by hanging my bishop with 30 minutes left on my clock (lichess.org/study/QUjLUORm/5JxOvWJC). maybe you could start by playing 5 minute Blitz games? seems like a decent middleground to fixing your problem!

I concentrate too hard on the board and forget to look at the clock (online). I think I'm playing as fast as opponent. Next thing I take a rare look at the time and I have just over a minute and opponent has three. I have tried to make it part of my move routine, but every time I take my eyes off the pieces it takes a few seconds to get back into it. I would love a talking clock, like the altimeter on a plane telling you the height above ground as you descend.

i've actually been looking for this for the longest time. maybe not a talking clock, but one with more sound alerts when certain time thresholds are met. i always find myself seeing i'm at 1 minute left, and the next thing i know i'm at 10 seconds. super frustrating - definitely reply back to this if you ever find a plugin of this nature haha

so another point i would mention is efficient disciplined calculation. more often than not we look at the same line 3 or 4 times over which also wastes time. This is a difficult skill to master mostly due to the discipline part for me 😅😅

i replied to a similar comment to this so I'll just copy paste my response "i actually had this problem with Classical Chess when i first started - the only real solution is to care about your rating. if you only care about individual games, you're going to use your rating as a currency to try and get an "immortal game" as quickly as possible. if all you're worried about is playing incredible games to show to your friends - you simply won't fix your problem in Rapid. care about your rating, set goals and be disciplined with the games you play. play for wins, not flashy moves. play the safe option 9 times out of 10, don't play risky Chess, and so on. it can feel very boring playing Chess this way, but if that's the case maybe longer time controls just aren't for you. when I first started playing Classical it was just an excuse to go and see my friends. i didn't care about my rating because I didn't have one - now that I have a rating that I care about and want to improve I use my time much more efficiently. here's a good example of a game in my first ever tournament. @jacksarkisian 3 күн бұрын
a lot of these do apply in Blitz, but you definitely have to play Blitz differently to Rapid. in Blitz if your opponent gets below 30 seconds you essentially just switch mindsets and play to flag.
