Quick science lesson. Blimps work like balloons. The blimp is filled with helium, a lighter than air gas that causes the blimp to float. Helium also is the gas that makes your voice high pitched. Before the Hindinburg, blimps used hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is ligher than helium, and is the lightest of all elements. The reason this gas is no longer used is in big part due to the Hindinburg. Hydrogen is also highly flammable, which is why the Hindinburg explosion was so large. Helium is not flammable, and is the second lightest element, which is why it is used today.
