What I've got so far (about the kids): Two siblings, an older sister named Lilly (the "captain") and a younger brother named James (the "quartermaster"). The two would play pretend in a land they called "The Land of Flame/Fire". One day, the sister takes the brother on an "adventure" which turned out to be them stowing away on a ship. She said it was going to the make-believe place that she and her brother played in. It seems Lilly was trying to save her brother from a situation back home. Because stowaways on this particular ship will not be tolerated, the children are almost discovered and so forced to hide. They begin to run out of food, and soon find that they are not alone in the bowels of this ship.

I’ve a theory...I think your character is the actor, either the man or woman we’ve seen on the posters. The kids that keep cropping up are stowaways who were hiding in different areas of the ship including the set for the movie that was being filmed. My guess is there was an accident the actor had a direct hand in that resulted in one, or both, of the kids getting killed (probably with the prop gun you used in the first episode). The actor now filled with grief is going back through their time on the ship and is finding out bits and pieces of the kids and their story. The chase scenes are probably when the kids were having to hide from guards out on patrol and the reason we’re seeing it through their eyes is because the actor inserts themselves into the role of the kids as they learn more about them...but that’s just a theory *A GAME THEORY*

Woah welcome MatPat! Yeah I had a similar theory about it being about the protagonist's career and how they were killed or the the children were killed in a freak accident. There's a lot about how the kids are telling stories and playing characters themselves, therefore linking to the protagonist in a way. There's a lot that hasn't been uncovered yet and I'm interested to find out if we were anywhere near to being close with our theories.

I have I slightly different one I noticed that the man and woman on posters are the same every time (at least if I saw correctly) so my theory is that the kids - an older sister and a younger brother I think - became actors and because there is a lot about becoming one character and killing the one before, the sister and brother got into a fight or she put herself so much in the role she didn't care about anything anymore, he died or something bad happened to him and now she is reliving the past. The monster, as well as the mannequins as Sean suggested, might be the character that she played and they are the ones haunting her.

Did anyone else catch that the blackboard that said "The Killing Joke" WAS actually a Batman reference? The joke at the end of that comic is about two people escaping from an insane asylum over the rooftops and one suggests that they shine a light over the side to use it as a bridge. Immediately after Jack reads that blackboard, he runs over a spotlight that's making a bridge. I think he went too fast to notice it.

As soon as the story started talking about him needing to become his character i figured that the person we play as is the deranged actor who lost themselves in the roll. Kinda how Heath lost it after getting to far into his roll as the joker and died.

The game is heavily inspired by old movies and the big machinary with the clock is from Metropolis from 1927. The siblings on the ship is Lily and James and they are stowaways on the ship. And the flower you found was a lily.

Shoot! I just wrote a comment talking about this. TIme to find it and delete it, lol! I compeltely agree with the nods to the movies though! Metropolis is a phenomenal movie for its time! I was reminded of it, as well. The lock, the workers, the steam, the machine. I was like "wait a second something about this feels really familiar" The effects in that movie are UNREAL. So impressive!! And then there's the Shining, The Killing Joke (adapted to an animated film at some point) heck even Jack Sparrow's lucky coin/hair trinket (that's also one of EIGHT keys that bind Calypso) makes it. Phantom of the Opera, of course ;) I'm sure there are many more. Well, I guess we can say film NOIR has a HUGE impact on this game, lol. All those shadows, the black and white, the unknown and the atmosphere gives me noir vibes. There was that picture, too, that Sean pulled out in the first episode. It's the picture with an entire audience staring at YOU. You're in the spotlight. Then the whole door emerging from the projecting screen can be a metaphor for "movie magic" etc.

Ok theory time! lily and James are the 2 kids playing right, lily being James other sister and saying that she is the captain who is better then James (in short) when the first poster is picked up the words are said "you're nothing without me" said by a female character to a male character...later on someone asks a man if he killed her, his reply was something along the lines of "i had to, she was slowly killing me". moving on a bit you are faced with a scene where to you have to chose between killing 2 people: a man and a woman. though out the game so far lily keeps saying to James that she'll protect him. now there has been a lot of notes about stowaways...maybe lily and James's "adventure" was set on this ship as they climbed bored as stowaways, there is a note that say about how they have had stowaways before-- and lily states "they'll send us back again" in layers of fear 1, the father (painter) lost his daughter to social services after becoming depressed about his wife* *she was burned in a factory fire and was in a lot of pain and eventually fell out of love with the father...another fire was caused in the house and she died...therefore haunting the house and trying to get revenge with the father (you) is trying to make a painting to apologises to both your daughter and wife going back to this game (layers of fear 2) what part does the director play (besides his creepy,deep voiced over view) and could you being playing as lily or James having one killed the other. because when you throw the plug in the bath lily says " you did it James, run" also the little (alive-ish/demon) boy we see could be little James as a child. ~melissa

The little kids were stowaways, they were trying to get food and make sure they weren't found by security. Their names are Lily and James, Lily is the older sister, and James is the younger brother. Edit: The security found out that more food had gone out towards everyone on the boat than what should have been, so they decided to keep the food under lock and key. The ship wasn't running out of food, the staff just wanted to make sure that there would be enough to go to everyone for the trip to the destination and back. 👍

Looking that up, I found that "as the flowers most often associated with funerals, lilies symbolize that the soul of the departed has received restored innocence after death" and that "white lilies symbolize chastity and virtue". So yeah, aside from being a reference to Lily, it could also be a (direct) reference to her innocence (as a child) or an (indirect) reference to (her) death.

Been lowing the film references here so far. If I'm not wrong, there's been the obvious one for The Shining, then one for Metropolis (the clock game with the factory setting), and one for Nosferatu (the coffin in the ship hold).

Not to look too deep into it but I really like how they make little hints towards things you learn in actor training. For example the bit about finding the animal to find it(the character) is a common idea from multiple well know practitioners. If an actor is struggling to "find" a character it's often recommended to pick an animal that relates to to the character and work from there, using characteristics of the animal etc. And the whole "becoming a vessel" is very similar to how Method acting is explained/taught. Any way I just thought it was a nice touch!😁

The scene wtith the big skull looking thing, with the torture machine that pops off the heads of the mannequins, the big ass clock and the working mannequins really really reminded me of the movie METROPOLIS. That movie is PHENOMENAL. Partly because it's a movie that makes you think and partly because of the freaking effects presented in it. I wonder if this game is making nods to a bunch of classic movies (IE The Shining with the bike in the hall....Jack Sparrow's hair trinket....It pops up at the part where the kids are starving and Sean was like "can I eat it?") So I wonder if this game is actually asking a question about the philosophy of acting/movie making in general. I mean it has a story but it's called 'layers of fear' for a reason, lol.
