I love how the puppets in this one aren't evil or some experiment gone wrong. They're just over excited to have a human to interact with and try to be friends with again. So their 'attacks' are just them being over eager to be friends with Gordon

I feel like I'm missing something with this game, and it's driving me crazy lol. Is there a good breakdown on this somewhere, or would someone care to elaborate? Maybe its just a matter of taste or maybe some personal issue but I feel so patronized during Ricky's speech. I loved all the hearfelt moments with the puppets you help, but I kept waiting for a big horror drop or more elaborate plot and instead I just got that speech and some simple bizarro puppets and then that's it the end. Some of it is misplaced expectations I'm aware, but am I wrong in being so frustrated?
@shepherdbrooks7609
@shepherdbrooks7609 Жыл бұрын
@@Mel-sn5dl Basically if you pay attention to certain snippets of dialogue and the papers scattered around, you start to piece together the story in the background. The Vietnam War was a vicious and terrible war, 18 and 19 year old boys were drafted and sent to a jungle in a foreign country and suffered immensely, and then when they came home, the media and the public spit on them and called them monsters when the real ones at fault were the billionaires and warhawk politicians that sent them there. The main character himself is strongly hinted to being a Vietnam vet. The puppet tv show was cancelled in the wake of the postwar period where the news cycle and tv shows were full of violence and negativity. Like Ricky's speech said, unfriendly and uncaring people don't want to learn about kindness and friendliness, they don't want to confront the darkness they've let consume them. The traumatized postwar generation combined with the growing power of corporations and corporate Capitalism over the country lead to a lot of trauma being passed down on the kids growing up during that time, being exposed to more harmful and negative content. The story here is that children should have silly compassionate and positive media to learn and be good humans, *and that includes the inner child of every adult who watches the show too.* The choice Gordon makes towards the end, when Ricky tells him "I KNOW deep down, you want to be friendly", to save the puppet show or leave, is about choosing to heal his inner child and allow himself some vulnerability, or walk away and let the trauma turn him into a closed off and unkind, unfriendly person. The puppets being alive I think isn't meant to be so literal but a representation of the vivid imaginations of children, and how the unkind and uncaring corporate suits and general public were trying to snuff it out, because their own imaginations were destroyed by trauma. There's this idea that because the world is an unkind, unsafe, cruel and hard place that we should bring up children in unkind ways to be "prepared" for it. I don't think that's true, not if we want to make the world better. If life isn't fair, we shouldn't teach children to be selfish, we should teach them about fairness to make the world more fair; if the world is unkind, teach them kindness to make the world even a little more kind, and so on. I think this story would probably mean more personally to people like my mom who grew up with a traumatized Vietnam vet father, but it does still hits home to me personally. These issues are real and have never gone away, and in some ways have become worse with the rise of the internet.

The letter to children at the end kicked me right in the gut. You can really tell how much care and intelligence went into this game throughout it, from the thought that went into the dialogue and the cut scenes, but that touch was really the cherry on top. I love how this game handles everything involved so well. War, trauma, abandonment, heavy topics to channel through children’s show mascots, but incredibly well done. I agree with everyone that most “mascot horror” has become a merchandising cashgrab, and I can see how this could also create quite the memorabilia, but it’s not just churned out for money. But on a funny tone, the abbreviation of MFN makes me read everything as “Mother-FUCKIN’” making notes far funnier. The board game note was quite amusing.

Yeah the choice of having resident evil style gameplay feels like it was such a good fit for the style they were going for. With minimal music and just the constant chattering for the puppets it builds up a weirdly eerie atmosphere. One of the things that stood out for me is that the puppets themselves don't say anything all that alarming 99% of the time... but every once in awhile you hear them say something that makes you do a double take, like "What did you just say?". You only get that effect by making the choice to have them ACTUALLY appear normal for the majority of their rants, and that's something I know a lesser developer would've looked at and said "No not creepy enough", but in actuality it makes it more unsettling Too many mascot horror games go full edgy blood demon mode right off the back and it's refreshing to see someone make some different choices

And I never said Gordon started right off as kind; the whole point of the game's story is finding lost happiness and learning to love your neighbor. But if you pay attention to the cutscenes Gordon does do kind things to the major puppets and agrees to help ALL of the others get back to their former selves at the end. 3:32:30 the Vietnam war was one of the first wars to be displayed on television, with recurring theme of not only the Vietnam war, but also with Gordon being a veteran of it, I think what the puppets watched was actual Vietnam war footage. That’s what made them “mean” so to speak

I mean it wasn't. It was the first conflict involving America to be shown. Why do all Americunts think they are the world? And also what? World War 2 news reels were shown in cinemas... Literally how companies like 20th century fox and Pathe got going. Such a weird thing to say... It like saying that the Ukraine war is the first in the internet era like Iraq and Afghanistan didn't exist.

I love how the war really is just a red thread that flows through the whole game. To be fair to that point you made during the music room about content adaptation: You have adapted over the decade in content creation. You've both diversified by doing other projects (voice acting, coffee, CLOAK brand), and adapted your content with variety in games and videos (single vs multiplayer, react videos, short film style content). Theres also a trend in content creators having edits within their videos to keep viewers engaged. I still find it as entertaining as I did back then as I do today.

I like how each one of the puppets you can help represents one of those four "Beauty, Power, Food, and Fame" from the scrap in that final letter to the children about what can't replace love

@@arcanosmox7113 I don't remember their names but I think it's like: Bird=beauty because they were looking in the mirror when you help them Sewer guy=power be the was always trying to force things to be fixed and do what he wanted Food=the dogs because they literally eat when you help them Fame=Goblett because they're in the theater watching a movie and movies make you famous

I think Pearl is Fame since her makeup cabinet looks like a diva's one. Ray is Power cuz he's the handiman and handles the power? And Arnold is Beauty cuz even though he looks monstrous, his inside is beautiful and he's just a musical boi who likes to play his piano. idk, that's just my guess.

Pearl is beauty, power is Ray, Food is Goblette(obviously), and Fame is Arneld, right? Of all four, Ray is the weakest in my opinion, although it still works.

I just love all the little nods throughout the game to Jim Henson. The Shadow Amethyst posters (Dark Crystal), The Mystic Maze posters (The Labyrinth), The Puppet Pirate cove mentions (Muppet Treasure Island), Puppet Winter Song (Muppet Christmas Carrol), there was a poster for their version of Fraggle Rock, and of course My Friendly Neighborhood (Sesame Street). As a massive Henson Studios fan seeing all of these little pieces just filled me with so much joy. I've been excited for this game ever since I saw Jack and Gab play the demo for it and I'm so glad that it's so fantastic. I can't wait to see crossover art of this game and Welcome Home

The fact this game has an intricate backstory of a world succumbing to the idea that nice guys finish last and actively frowning on any degree of kindness and by extension the shows moral messages and the whole time Jack's just "So then the puppets start murdering people??" "Yeah you gotta change with the times" My mans open thine eyes

I’m so excited to see where this game takes these brothers. They’ve got great games on their hands, and I definitely think they will go far with these different titles of “My Friendly Neighborhood” and “Iron Lung”. I wish them the best, and I’m so happy you likes this game! It’s one of my favorites!

Finally watched all of this (over multiple days) and the this is one of my faves out of all the games you ever played on the channel so far! I love the humour, I love the story, the voice acting is INCREDIBLE, the music, the sound and level design, the characters..... Everything about this is amazing and lovely and the end actually made me cry. This was such a joy to watch, it will definitely be one of my comfort videos from now on. 💚 Also thank you for shining a light on the indie creators out there and using your voice and your huge platform to get them more exposure!

I adore the sense of humor and effort put into this game, even just the silly little parody paintings show that the devs loved this game and wanted nothing but the best for it

I don't see anyone talking about this, so I'll put it here. I love how different the story is compared to the demo. Because of the demo, I was going into this video with the expectation of a puppet takeover, but the message of this was much more moving, and definitely separated it from Poppy Playtime, FNAF, and all that, because even though there should be more emotional attachment with children's souls being trapped in these objects for amusement, there's so much more violence towards them and sucks a lot of the empathy out. With this, instead of killing or disfiguring them, you harmlessly tie them up and even help them with their problems, and it's such a nicer tone. One of the loveliest horror games I've seen in a while.

I agree! We got baited but in the best way, they didn't just deliver all in the demo to bring in as many people possible, they kept this very nice surprise and change of pace to the player to figure out and it honestly is a perfect "demo" of the game itself because even as you play, that dynamic repeats itself (thinking it's just evil toys shoot shoot and discovering it's not)

It’s cus the later FNAF games kinda abandoned the sympathetic aspect. In FNAF1-3, they kept it in and gave a good ending with the souls released. FNAF4+ went for expanding the lore and spending more time developing the antagonist, which I never liked since the horror also came from the unknown child killer. SB made the animatronics sympathetic with them being conscious, but it didn’t commit to it as much.

I am so bloody glad that I watched this whole thing. The "Final Address" monologue at 3:36:10 was honestly quite a touching thing, made me pause the video and think for just a moment. I really loved the range of art styles found in this. Not just overtly cartoonish, but somewhat sinister with art deco, victorian punk, mature vibes. Obviously chock full of tasteful modern pop culture references. Some really cool character development as well - And considering most of the characters have very little speech ability, giving them real character development is a challenging thing to do. This was really, really cool. I very much hope to see more of this kind of creativity in the future.

3:42:02 Wait, the purple curtain was GIANNI??? THE VOICE OF GABRIEL ULTRAKILL AND LIEUTENANT COLUMBO??? THAT GIANNI?! Oh, the recording sessions must've been amazing. Just the image of Duke Nukem coughing, spitting, and wheezing into the mic to record sounds for the game. I would've never realized it was him if not for the credits.
