I love how this game handles everything involved so well. War, trauma, abandonment, heavy topics to channel through children’s show mascots, but incredibly well done. I agree with everyone that most “mascot horror” has become a merchandising cashgrab, and I can see how this could also create quite the memorabilia, but it’s not just churned out for money. But on a funny tone, the abbreviation of MFN makes me read everything as “Mother-FUCKIN’” making notes far funnier. The board game note was quite amusing.

Not just the video game itself, but Sean's speech at the end about supporting indie devs and such is really making me tear up. Sean is such an inspiration. Over the years and growing so quickly, you really would think he'd gain this huge ego and become an attention-hungry, fame-needing individual. He's not. He's truly never been and I'm sure he never will be. I've been watching Sean for 6 years and that's quite biazzare. He's only changed for the better. Taking care of himself further, getting a better feel for the world and other people's emotions as well. I love Sean so much and I hope he's successful and happy until he's done. He deserves the world and more. Now I'm going to go wishlist and perhaps buy My Friendly Neighborhood, not only because it's a great game, but because Sean's message inspired me to take the ability I have and use it for good. Thank you for being such a huge part of my life over the years. I appreciate everything he does for not only his fans and subscribers, but for the gaming community and just the world. I feel like I'm missing something with this game, and it's driving me crazy lol. Is there a good breakdown on this somewhere, or would someone care to elaborate? Maybe its just a matter of taste or maybe some personal issue but I feel so patronized during Ricky's speech. I loved all the hearfelt moments with the puppets you help, but I kept waiting for a big horror drop or more elaborate plot and instead I just got that speech and some simple bizarro puppets and then that's it the end. Some of it is misplaced expectations I'm aware, but am I wrong in being so frustrated?
@shepherdbrooks76099 ай бұрын
@@Mel-sn5dl Basically if you pay attention to certain snippets of dialogue and the papers scattered around, you start to piece together the story in the background. The Vietnam War was a vicious and terrible war, 18 and 19 year old boys were drafted and sent to a jungle in a foreign country and suffered immensely, and then when they came home, the media and the public spit on them and called them monsters when the real ones at fault were the billionaires and warhawk politicians that sent them there. The main character himself is strongly hinted to being a Vietnam vet. The puppet tv show was cancelled in the wake of the postwar period where the news cycle and tv shows were full of violence and negativity. Like Ricky's speech said, unfriendly and uncaring people don't want to learn about kindness and friendliness, they don't want to confront the darkness they've let consume them. The traumatized postwar generation combined with the growing power of corporations and corporate Capitalism over the country lead to a lot of trauma being passed down on the kids growing up during that time, being exposed to more harmful and negative content. The story here is that children should have silly compassionate and positive media to learn and be good humans, *and that includes the inner child of every adult who watches the show too.* The choice Gordon makes towards the end, when Ricky tells him "I KNOW deep down, you want to be friendly", to save the puppet show or leave, is about choosing to heal his inner child and allow himself some vulnerability, or walk away and let the trauma turn him into a closed off and unkind, unfriendly person. The puppets being alive I think isn't meant to be so literal but a representation of the vivid imaginations of children, and how the unkind and uncaring corporate suits and general public were trying to snuff it out, because their own imaginations were destroyed by trauma. There's this idea that because the world is an unkind, unsafe, cruel and hard place that we should bring up children in unkind ways to be "prepared" for it. I don't think that's true, not if we want to make the world better. If life isn't fair, we shouldn't teach children to be selfish, we should teach them about fairness to make the world more fair; if the world is unkind, teach them kindness to make the world even a little more kind, and so on. I think this story would probably mean more personally to people like my mom who grew up with a traumatized Vietnam vet father, but it does still hits home to me personally. These issues are real and have never gone away, and in some ways have become worse with the rise of the internet.

And I never said Gordon started right off as kind; the whole point of the game's story is finding lost happiness and learning to love your neighbor. But if you pay attention to the cutscenes Gordon does do kind things to the major puppets and agrees to help ALL of the others get back to their former selves at the end. As for your other statement, I have no idea what the fuck you were trying to say, other than Gordon tells Ricky, "I'm lucky I haven't been hugged to death. Or eaten." Theres also a trend in content creators having edits within their videos to keep viewers engaged. I still find it as entertaining as I did back then as I do today.

Yeah the choice of having resident evil style gameplay feels like it was such a good fit for the style they were going for. With minimal music and just the constant chattering for the puppets it builds up a weirdly eerie atmosphere. One of the things that stood out for me is that the puppets themselves don't say anything all that alarming 99% of the time... but every once in awhile you hear them say something that makes you do a double take, like "What did you just say?". You only get that effect by making the choice to have them ACTUALLY appear normal for the majority of their rants, and that's something I know a lesser developer would've looked at and said "No not creepy enough", but in actuality it makes it more unsettling Too many mascot horror games go full edgy blood demon mode right off the back and it's refreshing to see someone make some different choices

Gotta say, it's a little refreshing how unabashedly this game wears its influences on its sleeve. Sean pretty much called the _Bioshock_ influence right out of the gate, with the Art Deco aesthetic and the fact that your first weapon is a red pipe-wrench -- and for me, the overt homages to the assorted Muppets movies in the _MFN_ film titles got a few nostalgic smiles.

I think the best part about this game that no one talks about is the fact that the canon, true ending, is a *good* ending, a satisfying one. A lot of horror games, especially recent ones, don’t have good endings. So when you finish, you’re left with this sad or empty feeling, wishing for a good ending. And it’s even worse when there *is* a good ending, but it’s not the canon one. I really appreciate a good, wholesome end. Especially in a horror game. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.

From the very beginning of the game you could tell how well it was made comparatively to all it's other indie counterparts that feel more crash-grabby; this game's really got it all: Good visuals, good gameplay, an interesting and rather original thematic (especially the guns), a decent and not too convoluted story, amazing voice acting, and great humor!
