Fantastic lesson. I love the E harmonic minor vs diminished variants over the b7.

Love it!!! I love the version on 2 from the Vault. I think it’s 8-24-68. I’d love to know how Jerry is doing the walk-ups and walk downs in sets of three. Thanks for this video. It’s great!

No questions (thanks) ... every one of your lessons is a side trip into either new physical skills or (in this case) getting phrygian dominant under my fingers. Great stuff!

Happy to share! The guitar is set on the bridge pickup. Tone about 6 and Vol on 10. The trick is keeping the right hand u set control. Playing into a deluxe reverb (Kemper) with a TS9 and a little delay and a lot of verb

So Phrygian dominant over the B7 because it’s the 5th mode of E Harmonic minor? Am I correct in that thinking?

@@jacksnax4guitar460 A noob question, I'm focusing on modes right now in my studies. I think I'm getting close to the 'aha' moment. This song is in E minor, and so I'm going with that as the I chord. How do the modes change when the I is minor? Or is the minor *always* going to be a minor mode, and so really Em is a ii or iii or vi in this case?
@jacksnax4guitar460
@jacksnax4guitar460 2 жыл бұрын
@@perrydonham6860 Hi Perry, Modes are always confusing to type about…much easier to discuss with two guitars in person. That said let me try to explain how I see/hear this song. First of all I don’t think modally. Yes I’ll consider which mode is right, but I think it’s a mistake to assume one mode will encompass the entire song. Rarely is that the case. Almost always better to think chord by chord and if they all somehow are modal well…chalk it up to serendipity. To me…The tune is in E minor. But someone could just as easily think it’s in Gmajor because those two chords scales share the exact same notes…but I’d think that was a little odd because of where the composition starts and stops. So assuming it’s in E minor… The first two chords are effectively the same. They use the same note set. But the function of each note relative to the chord (Em or G) you’re playing over is going to change. I tend to use Em pent or just Em over this section, maybe a few color tones. Occasionally I’ll add the b5 (Bb) to make it sound bluesy. When the chords change to Am and D7 I change with them. I play Am pent, E blues or A Dorian over those two chords and resolve to G major. That section could be seen as a slow ii,V7, I in the key of G I suppose. But again I think about each chord. Slow song. The next chord is where things get interesting. The B7. That chord is the V7 of our i. Minor One chords still have Major V chords in many tunes. When we see/hear this it opens up a few options to the soloist that sound cool and perhaps a little unexpected to the typical blues rock player. The Harmonic Minor scale is what I’m using over that B7. I’m playing E Harm Min over the B7 chord. That scale is just the Emin scale with a D# instead of a D. This gives the 1,3,5 and b7 of the B chord a place at the table…but adds all the cool tension notes: b2,b6 & 4 to the mix. Some people will refer to this as 5th mode of E HarmMin and that’s correct. Others call it the “Spanish Scale” or Phrygian Dominant…others recognize the C triad superimposed on top of the B7 chord. ALL of that is correct…so just find out which way seems most intuitive to you and go for it. For me, theory is best used to explain why something you played sounded good rather than a way to guide you towards it initially. I like to use my ears in the moment and my mind afterward. I tend to see/hear it as a B7 chord with those extensions (B PhrygDom)or just call it EHarMin over B7. Things get even more interesting when you realize there’s a diminished chord in there as well! So then you get access to all those sounds too. B Dom7 with a b2 is an inversion of C Diminished. Diminished chords and arpeggios invert every three frets so the options get quadrupled. Crazy. It gets heavy fast. Anyway… this is hard and lengthy to type out… but I’m waiting for my kid at the doctors office. Figured I’d respond👍😊✌️😉🤓 Best, J

@@jacksnax4guitar460 A lot to digest, but I think I get the gist of it. I'm about 2/3 of the way through Marty's 50-lesson course on modes and have been spending a lot of time thinking through how they are organized and how they overlap, and this particular song is so deliberate that it gives me time to think as I'm playing, which is great. I do a lot of scale work, which is paying off, too. Just a random thought, the kind of analysis you did in your response is something that you just see much of in the literature or online. Ever think of doing a series of these in book form? Video is great but sometimes you need to read it several times to 'get' it. Or at least I do :^) I used to run a small publishing company (KidPub Press) and would be happy to help on that sort of project. I hope your kid's good and can enjoy today's perfect weather!

@@perrydonham6860 Thanks! He’s fine…annual physical. I’m sick with a non-covid cold so sadly we’re cooped up. I’m not any type of authority on the modes or how to best teach them in writing…so I think I’ll have to pass on publishing anything until I figure out how to do it right. 50 lessons from Marty? Wow…that’s a lot of time dedicated to modes. Let me know if I can help. Best, Jack
