I just stumbled onto this posting. I grew up on Jackson Browne. I was at Merriweather Post Pavilion that night. It was The Pretender Tour. He played and recorded "Running on Empty" (after a break, Jackson came on stage alone, at the piano, said: "Id like to play I've never played in public before .. ". The crowd was quiet and listening. When he sang "when the lights go down and we hear that sound and we remember why we came ... " the stage exploded in light, the band kicked in (Russel on the drums, Rosemary in backing vocals), the entire crowd in the amphitheater immediately jumped up. They closed with The Load-Out / Stay. Both cuts are on the album. That night was a lifetime memory!

There's a story about the guitarist singing falsetto. They discussed it, planned it, rehearsed it without telling Jackson. One night, live, the guitarist got up and headed fir the mike. Jackson was like, "What's going on?, and the guy started to sing. Jackson, and the crowd, loved if, and they used it as a finale for a long time.

The guy on the slide guitar (who also sings a verse of Stay) is David Lindley. My wife calls him the most famous musician you never heard of and he's worth YouTubing. Lindley is a virtuoso on the slide guitar and fiendishly talented on a horde of other instruments. His concerts are absolutely wonderful . Take a listen if you get a free moment.

The entire Running on Empty album is one of the best concept albums done. It opens with Running on Empty and ends with this, and every song is about life as a touring musician. The entire thing was recorded on the road, some on stage, and some in hotel rooms and on the bus and backstage. It's so good as an entire album

@Kel-n-Rich YO !!!!! Me Mark!! So happy you grabbed this one!! As usual it is SOOOOOO much fun seeing Kel's reaction which is genuine and accurate. Thanks again for picking it. Now my mission is to get you folks to co-react (I'm 99% certain you've never heard it, Rich) to my Jefferson Starship request (it's on your list) for "Awakening". As stated previously, it's kind of proggy in construction and delivery but my main thrust is the lead guitar work in the second half of the song. It TRULY compares to absolutely any other lead piece I know of...... and I know A LOT of them. In fact, I would ask/challenge any and all commentators here to also go and give this song a listen and, if you agree with me, say so to KnR. My next challenge would be to Rich specifically and that would be to give the whole album (Freedom at Point Zero) a listen straight through. It's one of those that you don't have to touch once you start it. You should recognize at least two songs on it (Jane and Rock Music) so it's not completely unfamiliar territory for you. My last challenge from before still stands ..... if I'm wrong about "Awakening" I will happily have breakfast delivered to you at your convenience from a local to you establishment that does so. See, the thing is, I know my money is safe .... I'm THAT confident. Again, if you do pick it, send me an email and I will shoot one back with tidbits of knowledge surrounding it. Take care you two. Mark, Detroit suburb.

Attended a J. Browne concert in the early 80s. Lawn seating at our local fairgrounds. A cool breeze toward the beginning of Fall.....right around sunset. I had a great spot, seated on the grass about 30 feet from the stage. All I can remember though....was this girl returning from the concession stand. She was carrying two large beers, and she tripped over someone & spilled one of those beers on ME. Of course, I hadn't brought a jacket & was shivering in a soaking wet tee shirt thru most of the concert.

Great song that always chokes me up. I especially like the "Stay" refrain. It reminds me of the early 60s. (I'm 65 now) My cousin had a 45 rpm of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs doing Stay. I wore it out. I think at that time it was the shortest record to make it in the top ten as it was only 1 minute and 38 seconds long. That may be part of the reason I couldn't get enough of it. Jackson Browne was a huge hit for several years and kind of faded off the radio. This song was on a great album. One of the Eagles stayed in the same place as him before they were a band, maybe when some of them backed up Linda Ronstadt. He was asked about influences in his ability to write songs. He said he would listen to Jackson work on one. Play it over and over, change a little thing here a word there until it was just right. All night hour after hour. This brings back visual memories of my first apt. and my stereo on the floor in the living room, everyone grooving to this album, Rush 2112, others at that time. Thanks :-)

"Jackson really put in the time" ( Glenn Frye - RIP ) who lived below him in the same building said he Could hear Jackson pounding out a song for hours and hours then he'd hear the tea kettle whistle blow for a ten minute break... then he was back at it,over and over for hours on end... "dedication, time, persistence, that's how you write a song" ! Glenn got a lesson that he never forgot ( From the history of the Eagles ) K-n-R love the channel man... keep rockin' 😎🎹

David Lindley's falsetto vocals!!!

What a great song writer! I'm betting you've heard "Take it Easy" by the Eagles, yep, it's a JB song. I've seen him several times, and once, in a small theatre setting, he said...."I'd like to do a Gregg Allman song that I wrote" in reference to Gregg's wonderful version of Jackson's "These Days" It took a second, but cracked up the house! Jackson's version is magical as well. That "For Everyman" album is pure gold from start to finish! David Lindley is genius! As a former roadie for two bands, this has always been a favorite of mine!
