The Eagles used to live in the same building as Jackson Browne and said his daily routine of practicing and songwriting made them realize they needed to be as dedicated as he was if they wanted to become successful.

That was such a fertile time in LA when so many artists collaborated, lived, and loved together. Browne, Eagles, CS&N, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, JD Souther, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Andrew Gold, Emmylou Harris, and others. They encouraged each other, inspired each other, and did great music together and separately.

Stay" is a doo-wop song written by Maurice Williams and first recorded in 1960 by Williams with his group the Zodiacs. Commercially successful versions were later also issued by the Hollies, the Four Seasons and Jackson Browne. He still tours and ends his shows with this song. David Perry Lindley (March 21, 1944 - March 3, 2023) was the slide guitar player and singer.

I was just a punk, but my roommate at the time was a sound engineer always on tour. He came home and the album "Running On Empty" had just come out. That's where this track is from. Roadies, sound checks, load-outs, long bus trips. It was all real. We all listened to this album over and over and over again. 'Nuff said.

The lyrics have been altered but Jackson and his crew do a great job with it. David LIndley (RIP 2023) was a great musician who was a sideman for Browne for quite a while but also a very in-demand sessions player for so may great artists his entire career. He also had a nice career as band leader for his band El-Rayo X. I have seen Jackson Browne several times since the end of 70s with the last time in 2015. JB always has great musicians in his band.

Late For the Sky is an amazing album. Entered into the Library of Congress as culturally significant. The entire album is stunningly beautiful with songs that are deep. Be prepared to feel all the feelings in listening to that album. My favorites include For a Dancer, Fountain of Sorrow, and Before the Deluge.

Maurice Williams, according to legend, was on a date when he was 15-years-old and was trying to convince his girl to stay out beyond her 10:00 PM curfew. She wouldn't, but he said the lyrics to Stay just came to him in that moment. He later recorded the song with his band the Zodiacs The song has been covered so many times by so many different artists that kids in America are practically born with the tune in their heads. Browne's version obviously changed the lyrics to make it an appeal to the audience to stay so that he (and the band) could continue to play music (the only part of a road trip that is actually fun for them). Ms. Butler's vocals speak to her talents as an artist -- On his next album Hold Out Browne wrote a tribute to her called That Girl Could Sing. Lindley's falsetto solo is a tribute to the original song and to the Four Seasons cover that both contain falsetto performances. The liner notes to the song on the original Running On Empty album contain the comment (The Zodiacs don't mind).

I love this number because it speaks of the joy of performing in such a poetic, yet also prosaic way. The band is there to perform, all the rest they go through, all the helpers and the audience and all of it is there so they can play just a little bit longer before they have to hit the road for the next show.

You have to hear Running on Empty, the title track of its album. It was so popular and it's such a great song. Doctor My Eyes is another one. When I first heard Load-Out and Stay on the radio, I raced right out and bought the 45 RPM single. It's got the Load Out on side A and Stay is on side B, so as soon as it's about to make that transition between the songs at the end of side A, you have to yank the needle up and flip the record over really fast and set the needle down right on the first groove of side B.

Jackson Browne is an amazing songwriter, muisician, producer and singer. He is far from an unsung hero or little known artist, he had/has a very full career with several top 10 hits for himself and of his songs recorded by other well known artists. Jackson is a lot like Carole King in that way. I have seen him live and he is perfect. I love this medley. Jackson wrote Load Out but not Stay, though they go together seamlessly. David Lindley is the one on the lap steel guitar and singing the high part...also an incredible musician.

That is a lap steel guitar. Just think of it as a progression from using a slide when playing guitar in the regular manner, you hear that a lot in southern music and country music and Lynyrd Skynyrd and rock and bues and so forth. So if you take the guitar and lay it across your lap, and you use a slide, now you are playing a lap steel guitar. Closely related is the dobro, Lynyrd Skynyrd even does an entire song in celebration of it, and it's similar, but it developed a resonator, which gives it more volume and a unique tone quality. Finally, you have a pedal steel guitar. Which is a whole different construction, not directly related to a regular guitar; it uses pedals and bender bars, and it is also played with a slide. The technique for that is similar to what we are seeing here with the lap steel guitar.

Like 👍 Number 600. Comment Number 110. Jackson Browne released his debut album 52 years ago. He and the late Glenn Frey wrote Take It Easy. Jackson Browne released his version and so did The Eagles in the same year, 1972! 🤯🤯 13:39 the late Richard Prior, RIP, was a comedian who inspired Mark Curry, Cedric, Martin Lawrence and other comedians. The Load Out and Bob Seger's Turn the Page are the two best songs about being on the road as a musician and are perfect contrasts. The Load Out reflects much of the joy musicians derive from being on the road and Turn the Page reflects the drudgery that also comes with it.

Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Running On Empty", "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
