Which is easier to peddle the compass or Coosa? I have a friend who wants to replace his dads kayak he fell 30 feet out of a tree 30 years ago and has a really messed up back his lure 11.5 has had nothing but problems never works right and we are afraid he might hurt himself on that piece of junk which would u suggest for him?
@TomyTekOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@right8630 I prefer the motion of the Hobie mirage drive. I tried a few of the prop drive kayaks and found the Coosa was not as smooth as others. Native had the smoothest drive for me. I would recommend your dad trying a couple of different kayaks to see what works best for him. Some shops allow demos? Where are you located? Delaware Paddle Sports just had a demo day this past weekend and is having another one in June.

@@TomyTekOutdoors north Texas and not many options to try them I own a compass, my main concern with it is having to mess with reverse or pulling it out to go to shore I’m 24 it obviously doesn’t bother me but I’m more curious what u would suggest for someone not as nimble as the avg joe. From what I’ve seen they are both great I’m taking my friend to look so he can decide on which one to get him.

@@right8630 If reverse is a must have, a prop drive kayak might be better for him, so he doesn't have to reach down. Pulling out the drive might be cumbersome for him. Some people say the motion of the prop drive bothers their knees. I'm sure some so say the same for the mirage drive too. Everyone has a different preference. That's why I always recommend doing a demo before buying if possible. It would be great if he could try your compass and see if he likes the mirage drive motion. Was the Lures a prop drive? If he had a bad back, you might want to see if a kayak is even good for him. Sitting in a kayak for hours could be painfully to him. It might be worth checking to see if there are any kayak fishing guides around. He could do a trip and see how he handles a few hours if fishing on a kayak.

@@TomyTekOutdoors it really depends if the weather changes he feels it but if he starts to hurt he stays home because honestly he does way to much as is but if u knew him you know he won’t stop 😂 he is a tough guy. The lure has the overdrive prop and it has been awful it is always in need of repair it’s slow. I like my Hobie a lot but if the Jackson is close to the ease of the Hobie it would be better for him if not the Hobie is probably better. I appreciate u getting back with me so fast it may make our decision easier I’m going to see them in person first.

Very nice...I love my Coosa HD.....very stable. I wanted the drive, but fish a lot of weedy shallows sometimes.

It's a nice kayak. The drive would definitely get stuck in weeds. Your world probably end up keeping it up while snakehead fishing. I'm not used to the pedal motion of a prop drive. I prefer the Hobie mirage drive. I think I could get used to it if I used one for a few weeks. We should try to plan a snakehead trip this year.

Would you purchase a bicycle pedal drive kayak? Or stick with the Hobie concept?
@TomyTekOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
I personally prefer the mirage drive. It feels like it requires less effort for me, but it might be because I'm used to it. I wish I could borrow a prop drive for a couple of weeks to see how it performs with the way I fish and crab. One big selling point for me was the ability to use the mirage drive in shallow water with flutter kicks. You could also bungee one of the shafts back to keep the fins flat to the hull and paddle around the shallows . Then when you get into deep water, you undo the bungee and can use your drive. With a prop drive, you have to lift up the drive if you get too shallow. I would highly recommend demoing both if you can. Thanks for watching.

Once you've had a Hobie, it's hard to go back to a circular pedal drive. Circular pedal drives utilize a motion that is less efficient and requires one to raise his leg during half of the work cycle. Whereas the Hobie drive is just a simple back and forth gliding motion. Half strokes can be taken. There is also little chance of banging ones ankles on the pedal shaft which occurs on circular bicycle pedal drives. But each has it's pro's and con's and that is why participating in these boating try-outs is a good way to compare each boats assets. Thanks

I do feel that mirage drive is easier to pedal. I wasn't sure if it was just me being used to using a Hobie. If I could use a prop drive for a couple of weeks, I think I would have a better idea. There's quite a difference between the different prop drives. I was looking into a prop drive because of instant reverse. I almost bought one, but then the 360 came out. I would highly recommend going to a demo day before buying a kayak. I'll be going to another one this spring. Thanks for watching.

so I've been looking for a new yak for about 2 years now. The one ive got has served it's purpose.. It's really difficult to decide on one.. it seems like everytime I look online there's a new kayak to consider. most of the fishing I do would either be pedaling or paddling to a spot and either anchoring or just drifting.. but on occasion I do troll and the speed I need to troll at would be roughly 1.8 to 2.2 mph. would this particular kayak be a good choice for that in your opinion.. It sucks because most of the yaks I'm considering are not sold anywhere near where I live so I'm depending on videos like this to try and narrow it down

There are quite a few options these days. It is quite overwhelming. If you can find a place that's a bit of a drive that has a demo day, it would be worth the drive if they have a good selection of kayaks. I drove 2 hours to go to this demo day. Based on the needs you mentioned, this kayak would work for you. It wouldn't be my personal choice. I demoed quite a few prop drive kayaks and found the Native Slayer to be the smoothest of all of them. I personally prefer the Hobie Mirage Drive. The motion to me feels like it takes less effort. The Hobie mirage drive has to be shifted to go in reverse, while a prop drive can go in instant reverse by pedaling backwards. You can also grab your paddle to start going in reverse. If you prefer a prop drive, I think the Old Town PDL is the best bang for the buck. If you prefer the mirage drive, Lightning kayaks has a more affordable option using the older mirage drive. I can go on and on about kayaks. If you'd like to talk about options, shoot me an email at tomytekoutdoors@gmail.com. I'd be happy to talk to you about kayak options.
