People are not unaware of poverty, they pretend not to know about it. The people of Mississippi for the most part are good people regardless of their income level. Black and white in squalor, so the 10% can be lords in their county. They'd rather be lords over this squalor than have real wealth like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs b/c then they would have to compete where they would be just jokes. But in dirt-poor Mississippi, that 1 to 10% of Mississippi are like plantation owners still. And it feels good to rein over a destitute county except for you. You are a big deal there. So you can feel great about yourself as you look down on the squalor your politics enable.

God23 well when you compare the crime rates from the 80s up until now, the homicide rate as well as the crime has dropped dramatically. New york city had over 2000 homicides in 1990 and in 2017 there was only about 250. The truth is that the crime has drasticly dropped throuhout the US and the crime that occurs in the the cities are in very small and segregated areas. So I think america still has some world class prestine cities and is not as bad as what everyone puts it out to be. I am 75 years old. I was born and raised in Jackson. I am so sad to see what has happened to this once beautiful place. Back in the day, it was said that everyone was so glad we had only "clean industry". I was born into a very affluent home as a result of my Dad's hard work. We had a staff of people who worked for us: maids and yard men and yes a Chauffeur. We all loved them like family. Jackson was a beautiful safe place. Everything changed when a lot of the people (Black) went to Detroit for work. The sad thing is when they returned they brought a welfare generation back with them. My Dad was the contractor who did renovations on the Capital and the Governor's Mansion. It was such a beautiful place at the time. I don't go back anymore. It is not a safe place.

It is because for so many years (in the past) black American's were not allowed/able to buy a home, they could only rent. What they COULD buy was a nice car. So generation after generation low income people were raised in rentals, where the landlord refused to keep the place nice and the renters felt it is not their job to maintain the property... you get crappy houses and nice cars.

Jennifer M Hey, what is the cultural appeal of muscle cars in predominantly black neighborhoods?

Overlooking the obvious. The cars are nicer than the home, because the home was likely paid off two generations ago. Either that or the rent is dirt cheap allowing a low income family to funnel money elsewhere.

I lived in Jackson, Miss. for 10 years, and did not live in a neighborhood that looked like this. Poverty is endemic all over this "wealthy country," but there will always be poor people. A lot (not all) of poverty is due to bad decisions, undesirable behaviors, immoral lifestyles, and systemic racism. You notice I put racism last, because I believe that if you get the first three right, you can avoid the pitfalls that come from systemic racism. Failure to stay in school and get a good education leads to poverty. Middle class lifestyles are no longer available to people who do not have a high school diploma. A big factor in poverty is single-parent families. They have always been there, but statistically many of the issues related to poverty is out-of-wedlock babies, where 70% of Black children are born to unwed mothers. That is a recipe for poverty. So there. I am a native Mississippian and it is only because of good decisions, a good education, strong family values, and a Christian lifestyle that I escaped what you see on this video.

I grew up in West Jackson. It was a very safe neighborhood where you left your front door unlocked when you were home. By the time my parents were elderly you could hear gun shots on the hour on Friday nights, I was held up by a teen on my front porch, and 34 drug dealers were rounded up within 5 blocks in one raid. You never walked around the neighborhood anymore. On West Capitol St, the major thoroughfare in the neighborhood, 80 percent of all the big old homes are now just empty lots. The only thing you see on Capitol St now are big black churches... no homes.

It's called systematic racism. Why would a Bank finance cars and trucks for $30k for a Black man or woman making minimum wage for 6 or 7 years. You are approved even with poor credit for the cars, but will not lend those same people that same amount of money to either buy or remodel a home? Why doesn't the city put more money into these areas where the residents pay higher taxes and higher utilities? Why are the roads not being fixed or paved with their paid taxes ? If you live in a World with blinders on then you will never understand systemic racism. Just thought I'd answer your question. It is deeper than what you know. You can go to any city on the East and South sides and see this. It is so much corruption in politics due to the policy makers being racist with their own agenda to keep the Brown people down until it is not funny. Without the poor,you couldn't have the Rich! They need theses people to stay hungry for a reason. It keeps them enslaved by the system that continues to exploit them.

I spent a big piece of my childhood just about three blocks down the street from where this ends. There's a lot more burned out houses than there were 20 years ago - I'd bet there's insurance fraud.
@johnsmith65865 жыл бұрын
A lot of these areas used to be really nice neighborhoods, with beautiful lawns and historic old houses. My uncles house was off of Bailey and was pristine. but over the years the white folks moved away and it went down hill. Some parts of Jackson are still ok, but given time It will go down the dumper as well. Its a shame to see so many former nice homes all boarded up and falling in.

Mississippi burning 02:00 under brilliant blue skies, clear and crisp. Atticus Finch, rocking chairs, porches meant to idle away the time, chipping away at its segregated past, slipping away into the 21th century. But maybe not so much so...I can smell the greens, Charlie. And the fried chicken, and black eyed peas. Time stands still, here in this part of Jackson.

Yes it's sad put this is how it looks in some of our surroundings areas in Jacktown... I used to really love Jackson but I've had my shares of break ends and neighbors on both sides of me being a new some thangs and things.. Any given day week or month. We live on Belvedere Drive and to me now when people say the dirty South that's just what it looks like around our property we pick up trash and tires everyday.. The tires are because of the tire place on the corner of Raymond Rd. And Belvedere Drive will charge people an additional $5.00 to keep or rather take off the customers old tire because they came in for a new one or either used one . And instead of the customer paying that extra they drive right up in the first or second or third neighborhood they see turn in and just drop off their tires.. As if the residents in the areas said oh hey bring it on over here because we can use them.. Just no respect of people's space and living.. I've came out the door on several that was about to dump their tires and they hopped right back on in their vehicle.. Smdh... Then there's the throwing their shit of beer bottles cans food from Mc Donald's , Pizza Hut, Wendy's , Churches / Kentucky Fried Chicken I mean full course meals from Sam's. But here's the big one even dump off and throw out the window their full household garbage as if we asked for that as well.. We've replaced so many mailboxes because people just can't drive straight or turn our mailbox along with the mail be gown in the wind... Shit we've never had anyone to come an apologize. Not even when the young lady hit our home now that fool thought she'd hit a car but this clown ass hit the damn house.. I couldn't believe my eyes.. She was trying to crank her damn car up that it wouldn't turn over because she'd taken a whole lot of grass and mud from the yard all up underneath the motor I was like baby you didn't hit a vehicle but my gotdamn house.. You won't be going no place I had to call my husband who was at work he came home and when he pulled up he was like damn!! But anyways that's Jacktown for me.. Don't get me wrong Jackson has somethings good going on but not on the south side of town it's more nasty with paper and crap everywhere I mean u exited off from being in another area on the other side of town and exit it off Ellis Ave. it looks pathetic there's more mentally ill hustlers, thieves and prostitues males /females walking around. I've notice an increase of white people looking all strangely stragged high and have backpacks suitcases dogs walking all up and down any given day or night or hour second and minute and police doesn't ask any questions. But I betcha I couldn't go on over to good ole Madison, Byram,Clinton, Ridgeland and be walking looking suspicious they would always be checking I.D. They throw papawr as well also no body cares about others yard. My husband pays Mortgage every month yet we tend to have others who we didn't know belonged and lived in our home with us.. They would walk or drive their truck with long ass trailer all up in your damn yard. And never speak never say a word as if we owe them mutherfucker something ...just know gotdamn respect! One time I was sitting In the yard and just finished cleaning it up mowing and clowns will see me sitting out and still throw their shit.. I used to get mad and be fussing and cursing.. But now I just say a prayer for them because they maybe needing someone to pray for them and that's how I try to think about all of this ... I constantly pray for our Capital and the clowns that we all have to live by or next door or down the damn street to... It's every man for himself ..God for us all.

Cameron Williams Jackson stared going downhill in the 70s and after the elections of a few corrupt mayors, the damage has been dealt heavily. At this point, a lot of politicians and Mississippians alike see Jackson as a lost cause. Fixing Jackson costs money that Mississippi honestly doesn’t have right now. And trust me, I hate seeing my city like this, but this isn’t an issue that can be solved by us alone. Mississippi has huge poverty, and we as a state are actually criticized because of it a lot but everyone who criticizes Mississippi for its issues refuses to offer help. It’s a viscous cycle
