JSU is my favorite SWAC band, and they did a great job in 2025 Rose parade, but I think the late Dr. William Foster from FAMU would have something to say about what the standard is if he were still alive. It was Dr. Foster who created the standard for what we now see in HBCU bands today. Each may have their style, but there is no debate that it started with him. As was stated in bios about his life, his innovations revolutionized college marching band technique and the perceptions of the collegiate band. He became director of bands at FAMU in 1946, bringing over 30 new techniques to the band world, which have now become standard procedure for high school and college bands nationwide.
