Jacksonian Democracy extended democratic rights and suffrage, or the ability to vote, to the common man. Power shifted from elites and the wealthier citizens, to the farmers, mechanics and laborers which transformed the country. However, it also denied rights to others like women who began fighting for the right to vote and brutal policies were carried out against enslaved people and Indian tribes.
This video explores the benefits and the shortcomings of Jacksonian Democracy for students from 4-8 grade. It also covers some of Jackson's policies like the spoils system and the Bank War and why his critics saw him as a king who abused the Constitution.
