+Jacqueline Viana actually dueling was illegal in New Jersey when it took place. They only did it in New Jersey because they had an obscure spot in New Jersey that would be good for a duel. Every single person who was present at the duel had to turn their backs to Burr and Hamilton because it was illegal, and neither Burr nor Hamilton wanted any witnesses to the event. This is why nobody knows who shot first, because nobody saw the actual gunfight but Hamilton and Burr.

Jefferson actually included a clause condemning King George for allowing slavery in his first draft of the Declaration of Independence, and classifying them as MEN, thus included under the "all men are created equal" statement. The Southern states later had it taken out. Which raises an interesting point: if that's what he believed, why didn't he free his own slaves?
@everflores94848 жыл бұрын
Maybe -I don't know- because freeing slaves became harder after the rebellions? He was somewhat racist, but not as much as most of the South as I see it.

For anyone wondering who the blue man blending into the curtains is, that is Tobias Funke, from the show Arrested Development. One of the big jokes of the series is that Tobias wanted to join the Blue Man Group, and showed his commitment by painting himself blue. Naturally, he left lots of stains around the house and began to blend into his surroundings quite a bit, surprising even the viewer when he revealed his hiding spot. The show is well known for the enormous subtlety in many jokes.

He had a perfectly good opportunity to stem slavery with the Louisiana Purchase by barring it's practice in the new territory, however Jefferson wittingly opted instead to assure the economic potency of the United States even with figures such as Thomas Paine urging him to do otherwise. For if he had waited for merchants and traders to settle out in the new territory of Louisiana it would have taken far longer to settle; leaving, essentially, 'his' republic economically impotent. And when it comes to slavery, come now, this was a time where race-theory was a legitimate contention that had yet to be dismissed. To blame him for putting Republic before Slave is simply unfair given the century, his actions, and his works. Jefferson would more than willingly contradict himself on a frequent basis to grow the United States into a power worthy of the world stage. That is why he's truly great, for having been able to sacrifice his ideals upon the altar of practicality and the future prosperity of the republic.

how successful could LA have been with slavery stemmed? It wouldn't have been and it would still feel the effects of it today. But none of it matters now, because we are stuck in the past and certain minorities can't move forward no matter how many advantages they are given. Why must liberal America repay slavery's sins with more racism. Its funny as fucking stupid as reverse racism sounds it actually makes since, just not the way racist obama loving liberals use it.

As someone who happens to like Jefferson, I think it necessary to evaluate his character as well as his morals instead of just glossing over his ideals, because it offers us a window into his mindset instead of just simply comparing his morals to our own. It is also important to consider time-period mindset with what was and was not morally acceptable. If we just compare everything to our current society just about all of the past looks awful in one aspect or another. This is why taking closer looks into humans and events in history is so important, as they say: Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Oh, wow, John. I love ya man, but just, wow. You really dropped the ball on this one. I'll try to keep this brief, but, you're doing a discredit to Jefferson. First of all, Jefferson actively campaigned for the emancipation of slaves- he supported measures to end slavery as early as 1779. He DID free some slaves in his will, the rest, however, were not freed, not because of a lack of will on Jefferson's part, but because his family sold them to pay off his debts after his death. Also, the Barbary Wars were a LOT more important than just "an example of foreign policy interrupting domestic policy," they arguably formed the national character of the new nation in a powerful way. It's just, you're usually so good about this stuff, that I'm kind of surprised this was so sloppy.

Vosian Thank you First draft of the Declaration of Independence was full of anti-slavery remarks. He stated that King George III “has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating and carrything them into slavery in another hemisphere as to incur miserable death in the transportation thither…Determined to keep open a market where men should be bought and sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit as to restrain this execrable commerce.” “Where the disease [slavery] is most deeply seated, there it will be slowest in eradication. In the northern States, it was merely superficial and easily corrected. In the southern, it is incorporated with the whole system and requires time, patience, and perseverance in the curative process.” Thomas Jefferson By the time of Jefferson’s death in 1826, State laws had so stiffened that it had become virtually impossible for Jefferson to use the same means as George Washington. “President Jefferson was accused of having fathered a child, Tom, by Sally Hemings. Tom was said to have been born in 1790, soon after Jefferson and Sally Hemings returned from France where he had been minister. Present-day members of the African-American Woodson family believe that Thomas Jefferson was the father of Thomas Woodson, whose name comes from his later owner. No known documents support this view.” Herbert Barger, the Jefferson family historian and genealogist who assisted in the original DNA study for Nature (and who strenuously objected to the conclusions published in the original story) explained: “My study indicates to me that Thomas Jefferson was not the father of Eston or any other Hemings child. The study indicates that Randolph [Thomas’ younger brother] is possibly the father of Eston and the others. Randolph, named for his maternal Randolph family, was a widower and between wives when, shortly after his wife’s death, Sally became pregnant with her first child. . . . She continued having children until 1808 when Eston was born. Randolph Jefferson would marry his second wife the next year, 1809. . . . [Significantly, t]hree of Sally Hemings’ children, Harriet, Beverly and Eston (the latter two not common names), were given names of the Randolph family.”

Thomas Jefferson was a great man, and yes, he had immense flaws, not the least of which being his affair with one of his slaves. But if you look up what specifically he thought about slavery, you'll find he really hated the institution itself. He even admonished the British for bringing slavery to the colonies in his original draft of the Declaration. He only kept his slaves and didn't advocate abolition because, due in part to the shortcomings of science in his day, and due to his upbringing and culture, he honestly believed slaves were incapable of taking care of themselves. From his point of view, however ignorant and warped it was, it would have been crueler to slaves to free them. He may have been very, very wrong, but I don't think you could say he was a bad person just for that, anymore than you could say Isaac Newton was a poor scientist because he believed in alchemy.

okay the other day MY history teacher shown this to us and read your post, but I really like your thinking on this, and Thomas Jefferson was a REPUBLICAN and did you know that the two presidents before him were FEDRALISTS? and the two before him were 1) George Washington and 2) John Adams, and we were watching this and I said wow this is really cool and interesting, and yea I do agree with you ONE HUNDRED percent. plus my friend from JIM HILL *im a RAMSTAD ROCKET* her history teacher LOVES Thomas Jefferson, he is her teachers favorite president and mine to I would probably have to say...

Carla Shopley You should ask him the difference between Thomas Jefferson and Bush....aka a true nationalist vs an internationalist. All politician candidates today are internationalists; aka Globalism\freetradeagreements and killing middleclass\workingclass while blaming capitalism(liberals) and unions\wages\taxes("conservatives").
@TheBarbaraLouize10 жыл бұрын
A major part of Jefferson's income was from the manufacture of nails, which were made by slaves, teenaged boys mostly, who were whipped when they didn't work fast enough. Just a smidgen of his heinous racist behavior . . .
@bobokittyFukk10 жыл бұрын
I think people need to realize that the internationalists will and always have found a way to shit on any form of nationalism; either by demonizing it or just straight out lie\misrepresent it. It is a war of minds between nationalism and internationalism and its been going for atleast 100 years. For internationalism to win, nationalism has to die; which is what we are seeing today; thus; welcome project Globalism and Walmart: made in China shit. People without roots or cultural heritage is the easiest to manipulate\lead in the direction you want. Go watch; "Spielberg's Hoax - The Last Days of The Big Lie" and you can see how its done. Civil war and slavery is used in the US to destroy nationalism by demonizing them and linking it together with slavery, while the holocaust is used in EUrope. Its the exact same thing.

John, I think you are wrong about Jefferson and slaves. He wrote an anti-slavery clause in the first Declaration of Independence, but it was edited out. He also advocates for the abolition of slavery in his Notes on the State of Virginia. At the Confederation Congress in 1783, Jefferson added a provision to the discussion in which America would prohibit slavery in any new territory acquired from then on out. The provision was actually defeated 7-6 by the Congress' delegates. This may have prevented the Civil War. He owned slaves, but a racist he was not.
@antonioking947910 жыл бұрын
yes i agree with your argument, but you can not deny that the very fact that he owned slaves himself makes him look like a hypocrite.
@whitetig210 жыл бұрын
I think people are way to committed to protecting Jefferson's virtues and not seeing him for who he is. Jefferson may have said and written great things but we can't reconcile the things he said with his actions.This is a guy who enslaved over 100 human beings while writing that all men are created equal, he was so conscious of his hypocrisy that he would 'secretly' sell his slaves at the market because he was ashamed of himself to do it publicly. In fact his declaration document was so well taken that many Northern slave holders freed their slaves to live up to his ideals in their lifetimes, Jefferson did not. Jefferson was a complex man we shouldn't hate him but to throw a blanket over his obvious believe dilemmas does no one any good.
@N1N09710 жыл бұрын
he didnt enslave them per say, but he did own slaves. it was customary at the time to own slaves, especially as a plantation owner in the south. we regret to acknowledge that Jefferson freed them all upon his death in 1826

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am currently taking APUSH and I have a DBQ( document based question) tomorrow. My teacher was nice enough to give us the main topic (Thomas Jefferson and his Presidential Policies) because it's our first one of the school year. This video has helped me out soooo much, I honestly had no idea what my teacher talks about most of the time even though I read the textbook (which I also don't understand..sadly). Okay, enough blabbing. My point is THANK YOU FOR HELPING A STRUGGLING APUSH STUDENT THAT HAS A DBQ TOMORROW! Wish me luck tomorrow! (:
