Super-cool. Herbie kind of pulled a Frederick the Great on Jacob Collier. In 1747, Bach visited the Prussian King's palace in Potsdam, where Frederick gave him a long and complex musical theme on which to improvise a three-voice fugue on the spot - and then challenged him to improvise a six-voice fugue. Bach composed the latter after his visit, and entitled it "A Musical Offering". Frederick's theme was clearly made difficult to challenge Bach, just like Herbie's was for Collier! And Collier nailed it - in his own way, kind of like Bach!

I love this thing Jacob is doing with #IHarmU. Along with his genius arrangements and compositions on his album, he harmonizes and arranges short videos that people submit to him. This one is particularly amusing to me because it almost seems as if Herbie's submission is a "challenge" for Jacob because the melody is a little weird and "outside" but Jacob totally nails it. I wonder what Herbie's reaction was after he heard Jacob's treatment of his submission.
@DanielBarberMusic3 жыл бұрын
I love these little projects, too, it's beautiful in so many ways, not only musically, but using music to bring people together, delight and have fun! I'm sure Herbie was delighted and not surprised by Jacob's response to his melody. Herbie knew Jacob would do something cool with it, but he couldn't have known what that would be. Therein lies the fun... :-)

When Jacob accepted his Grammy for his arrangement of Moon River, the first thing he did is talk about and show respect to the musicians whose shoulders he stands on. Herbie Hancock is one such towering musician. So, you hamburger flippers who know nothing of genius in legacy as it pertains to Hancock need to do your homework, humble yourselves and shut the hell up. That having been said, as I am a forever fan of the genius musicianship of Herbie Hancock, I am a HUGE fan of the genius and musicianship of Jacob Collier.

Hancock came up with some sort of dodecaphonic serial tune. It funny that such an experienced warship like him felt he had to challenge Jacob and felt nervous about it (that's my reading of his grin and choice of words, at least). Indeed, not a problem to Jacob.
@libenasukro4 жыл бұрын
No interpretation of Mr. Hancock's actions here could be further from the truth. As a master of the keyboard, he simply wanted to give Jacob a challenge that he probably felt would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do anything with. I believe he was impressed, pleasantly surprised and blown away by the result. Nervous? What are you smoking? It is telling that you see an adversarial angle to this when in fact it is purely collaborative.
