Whether or not you "master" multiple instruments or not, playing more than one instrument can give you a wide sense of your space and roll in the music. It makes you empathetic, not sympathetic musically. Jacob Collier's grasp of most instruments at this early age shows a holistic understanding of what music truly is.

I think if I had to choose only one lesson to show a young student who’s eager to learn what’s “musical playing?” What’s “musicality”? I would show them this improvisation. It has it all. The way he develops his ideas, introducing these short but very effective and memorable little melodies. Those textures and harmonies, the endless flow of chords and ideas, the unbelievable amount of surprise, the way he flawlessly exchange between sweet classic diatonic harmony and complex jazz voicings, between hymn, gospel and virtuosic runs. It’s music from the first two notes. And off top of all that totally improvised of course! Just unbelievable. I find myself returning again and again to this video. Thank you so much

Truly, listening and enjoying jazz is the best way to learn it! Once you start to really feel a tune and love it, try to learn it by ear, it'll build your jazz ear strength, and your vocabulary, all the while look up the chords and changes for the songs you're listening for, keep doing it and having fun playing improvising on simple parts of it, like keeping it on one note, then thirds, then between the chords, then eventually let yourself go and I can assure you, that feeling is every bit worth it to be able to lose yourself in the music of jazz, with everyone you play with!!! I wish you the best of luck Keep Your Mellow Chill, you've got this!!!!!
