Whether or not you "master" multiple instruments or not, playing more than one instrument can give you a wide sense of your space and roll in the music. It makes you empathetic, not sympathetic musically. Jacob Collier's grasp of most instruments at this early age shows a holistic understanding of what music truly is.

Phrasing is a key element inside of melody and rhythm. To become a master of melody, you must first become a master of phrasing.

I think if I had to choose only one lesson to show a young student who’s eager to learn what’s “musical playing?” What’s “musicality”? I would show them this improvisation. It has it all. The way he develops his ideas, introducing these short but very effective and memorable little melodies. Those textures and harmonies, the endless flow of chords and ideas, the unbelievable amount of surprise, the way he flawlessly exchange between sweet classic diatonic harmony and complex jazz voicings, between hymn, gospel and virtuosic runs. It’s music from the first two notes. And off top of all that totally improvised of course! Just unbelievable. I find myself returning again and again to this video. Thank you so much

Truly, listening and enjoying jazz is the best way to learn it! Once you start to really feel a tune and love it, try to learn it by ear, it'll build your jazz ear strength, and your vocabulary, all the while look up the chords and changes for the songs you're listening for, keep doing it and having fun playing improvising on simple parts of it, like keeping it on one note, then thirds, then between the chords, then eventually let yourself go and I can assure you, that feeling is every bit worth it to be able to lose yourself in the music of jazz, with everyone you play with!!! I wish you the best of luck Keep Your Mellow Chill, you've got this!!!!!

The album IN MY ROOM is the clue. It's a celebration of the many years Jacob has spent in his music room, undisturbed, throughout his teens exploring harmony and rhythm and deepening his mastery of the keyboard and other instruments. He says "sometimes you break for a bit of food or something". That's how the hours slip away.... As a boy he had the 'luxury' of this freedom at home. Ideal conditions!

Bruder Tak what's sad is he won't be really big.... He is ALREADY big amongst the smart, musically inclined people but he's never gonna be a giant celebrity. The world isn't just.

I agree with some others here. I would love for Jacob to do a CD of just piano improvisations like this. I could listen for hours. Of course, this virtual piano doesn't suck either.

This video brought me to buy Keyscape for myself several years ago and to this day it remains as one of my best purchases as a composer and pianist. No other sound library comes close to the richness and fidelity in sound that Keyscape has to offer, and the wide selection of different keyboards available is paramount to the program's uniqueness. To say that Keyscape is one of the best virtual instruments on the market is an understatement, and these videos that bring in a wealth of talented players showcasing the capabilities of the program was an incredibly smart decision by Spectrasonics. Thank you for this excellent product!

reminds me of long trips to my tai chi mentor who lived in the mountains i would drive my car with all the windows open and look out at the very vast and beautiful yet very lighthearted and comforting view with the smell of nature and wind in my face while i was playing a different solo keith jarret concert each way there and back. something really lovely i've been lucky enough to experience, thanks for reminding me jacob

@Maafa 1619 Funny, I never found Pianoteq that inspiring at all. Keyscape and Addictive Keys did it for me. I've never found modelled Piano's that good. Arturia's Piano V is okay ish but just doesn't feel alive and needs so much tweaking. Pianoteq felt the same to my ears.

I bought keyscape recently and I’m very very happy i did so ! It’s the best I’ve played so far. Though, I don’t have the skills like this guy perhaps i do think it’s important to get an accurate sounding piano because it boosts your creativity so much !! 👌❤️
